I read some commentary that if Carlos De Los Cobos doesn't get off to a good start with the Fire this year, he'll be fired and replaced by Preki.

^ that would be bad for their fans. I wouldn't wish Preki on anyone (well maybe Columbus :D ).

Can't govern by fear alone at this level. That lack of respect was probably Preki's biggest issue. Not only was he seen as mo's boy because of their KC days, he just came across as a prick constantly.

Good, telling Winter quote on this issue on Soccer Central today "we have to be ready so that at least we can show how we mean to play soccer."

In other words, it'll be rough, but it'll look good.

This tournament sets the pace for the regular season. I think players need to be confident with only 2 weeks to go before the start of the regular season. I hope we put out our best line up atleast for the first half to see what we are able to accomplish.

So we're definitely playing to a system. The thing about the system seems to be that it's not very attractive, weak on attacking (perhaps due more to player skill level rather than the nature of the system) and easy to defend against.

If you look at the first half, the Fire kept near-perfect shape through the midfield and didn't stray up to press high. That means you've got 10 guys jamming the forward half that TFC has to get through. Therefore, no goals. Look at the Houston game - they pushed up on us and were easier to puncture, hence we scored and had a bunch of chances.

If this is all the mystery there is to our "system," we're in dire straits.

Lastly, not sure I like how much flow we're putting through Gargan, who's less than amazing with his touches. The guy has now become a central piece of our buildup and gets involved both through the RW and the centre. If you're going to have a key defender do that much play building, he should probably have a bit more ability than Gargan.

bman27
03-05-2011, 05:59 PM
mine seems fine, anyways, we are still going to rely so much on Dero/ De Guz to get the balls forward, Cordon, Labrocca and Peterson just aren't doing it and the strikers are getting absolutely no service

Oldtimer
03-05-2011, 06:01 PM
At the half, with an experimental line-up, they are looking shaky playing this style, especially in defense (Cann's absence is certainly felt). With JDG and DeRo they would look a better.

* It's clear that the players don't know each other. That's responsible for some of the shakiness. Hopefully that will improve after a few more games.

* The players are still learning how to play possession football. Some of the shakiness is due to the new style. Hopefully the players can learn it well enough (I have this fear that maybe some of them just aren't good enough to learn an unfamiliar style. I hope that's not the case).

Not too concerned about the score in this game. It's more important that they learn how to play together. It's a pretty far cry from Barcelona :) at this point.

Pigfynn
03-05-2011, 06:02 PM
We are looking a very poor side. It's a simple question of player talent level as it always is..and it's just not there.

jloome
03-05-2011, 06:03 PM
I saw some positives. Frei and Attakora have both really been working on distribution.

We're too predictable right now in our buildup, with everything going to the wide forwards, instead of allowing some building up through the midfielders, so that the forwards can cut in or out and the fullbacks can get up field.

Some positive signs though.

bman27
03-05-2011, 06:04 PM
this system works well if your midfield is constantly working to create space for themselves. Chicago is having an easy time of defending it because they are staying static. they can't just wait for the ball to come to them

I agree with you,

maybe Winter or the staff knows that the buildup through the middle will be good once DeRo and JDG are on the pitch, so why not work the flanks and see how "bad" we are on the wings.....lol....just a thought

of all the Euro trialists and academy kids and draft picks, Martina is the only one that really impresses me. The others might be OK, but Martina stands out as someone that I think can succeed in MLS and maybe be above average.

He's got very good ball skills, can put in a decent cross, and he's very fast.

one thing to note, Aron and Bob stress that you must switch from right to left or left to right if you run into a "wall" or "dead end".....

In this game, if you notice, TFC is slow to switch the sides, and they usually do it by passing the ball back to a defender or someone behind the play.

a quicker switch is by directly passing the ball over the middle and into the left or right side....but this requires top level skill

of all the Euro trialists and academy kids and draft picks, Martina is the only one that really impresses me. The others might be OK, but Martina stands out as someone that I think can succeed in MLS and maybe be above average.

He's got very good ball skills, can put in a decent cross, and he's very fast.
He seems to have some good football sense. If you watch, he's one of the only ones in the midfield trying to move into open spots and give the man on the ball some options. He's got good physical attributes too.

I think I'm starting to see what Winter's interpretation of Total Football is : Keep the ball on the pitch. As long as the ball is on the pitch you are playing football. If you shoot and (god forbid) score, the ball is now out of play, so you are not playing football. IF at the end of the game you can show that you have scored no goals you can say that you played more football than the other team did. You did more to keep the ball on the pitch.

Surprised to see a mostly experimental lineup this match. I would have thought that Winter would have wanted to play the first team to gel them... but I guess he's still being forced to trial players, the roster is still pretty thin.

They looked better in the second half, less shaky. It may take time, I think, but they will eventually pull themselves together, sometime in the season (hopefully not too late for a playoff run).

About Martina. Good player, but I fear people around here are going to throw him under the bus real quick. He's good on the ball, very confident, but holds on to the ball too long. We know how that's been going for Dero and he actually puts the ball in the net often. I do fear that Martina can be seen as a bit selfish. Personally, it doesn't bug me yet, I'm just saying I see it happening.

The only part of his game that I'm not too sold on yet is his crossing ability. He rarely crosses the ball which is a bit of a problem, but I'm not sold he's a good crosser of the ball when he does.

Still needs work but a Improvment over what I saw in Orlando

...the roster is looking better, seem's Winter is locking down his players. Also I liked seeing all 4 Acadamy players getting playing time

...the pass's up from the defence were looking much better (keeping in mind Chicago was playing with ten for most of the match)

...our attack is looking better, although we still lack that final touch to put the ball in the net. I felt a strong sense of that "Attacking style" Winter is bringing to our club and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this match!

Well I will say this... Thought we sucked BUT you'd almost forget we started / played a ton of kids. Issue is they should really be broken in by coming off the bench rather than being thrown in the fire.

ok, I was looking for some progress and I thought from what I saw (on the shitty buffering stream) Frei was not handling the ball every 5 minutes like the orlando games. There seemed to be trouble getting the ball to the forwards. I hope this improves by the Vancouver game. If not a 0-0 scoreline looks possible.

I did notice Maicon tearing one into Makubuja (I don't think that's how you spell it) when they had a 4 on 1 and the kid just made the worst decision possible and ended up losing the ball.

That's one disadvantage of putting some very inexperienced players on the pitch while the senior guys are trying to win and earn a starting position.

I'm curious who was calling out who? Was it regulars calling out trialists? the other way around, or trialists calling out the academy boys? Really interested is seeing if you can provide more info here.
