Does anyone in the know think that this will produce anything in terms of development for our team? It looks like more of a marketing, spread your brand, kinda thing only to me...but then again I can be wrong and that's why I am asking.

dunno what kind of market youd find down there, its not like youre going to india or china. to be fair i was wondering the same thing. i suspect maybe its in a league where they get to see alot of talent throughout the islands or something to that effect

I can't even find information on this club and they were in the THIRD division of the BARBADOS league?! Seeing as our u17s beat Barbados 8-0 I can't see this helping TFC from a development standpoint. Good way to spread the brand however

To who? The carribbean is hardly a wealthy area

Also the markets aren't as big as the likes of india or china. I'm not convinced of this angle

So...Colorado partners up with Arsenal, New York belongs to the Red Bull sports family, and Toronto finds itself affiliated with...Bagatelle FC?

One of these things is not like the others.

I was initially pretty skeptical when reading the news but it becomes a little interesting/encouraging that you think that Barbados is very near South America geographically speaking. Suppose that some players don't quite catch on in countries like Brazil, Venezuela, they might find themselves in Barbados where they can be seen by TFC with this partnership. Also other countries like the Guyanas for example may have a gem or two (DeRo's family has its roots there for instance).

I don't know, maybe I'm reaching, but we'll see...

^^what, that he's reaching?

In all seriousness, we are Toronto FC, not United, Arsenal, what have you. We need to make partnerships where we can and getting a foothold in the islands is a step in that direction. I don't know who else might be there but if we are the "name" to recognize it can only be a good thing. Think of all the great baseball players that have come from that region, I'm sure there has to be a few football gems there also.

This can only be good.

that theres some strategic reason as to why they picked this team in this country and it has nothing to do with marketing

I'd just vacation in Barbados, visit a local team, talk about partnership and write it off as business expenses.

Its probably going to be used as a tax shelter, or off shore bank account....

Funding caribean academies in exchange for partial ownership or first right of refusal on players could be low cost method to build a broader pipeline of youth talent. Not sure if the Barbados is the place I woud start (T&T and Jamaica would make more sense). Kinda like the Jays in program in the Dominican.

Some parts.

Actually Barbados is one of the wealthier countries in the Caribbean.

I'd rather have a feeder team than be a feeder team!

Maybe they're just going to put this link on the back shelf for a place to train in the offseason. Not that Florida isn't a great option.

Or maybe it's a hub for scouting into South America?

I'm honestly pulling this speculation straight from my ass if you probably can't tell.

with alot of soccer fans?
you know what i mean, its not like the US where youve got 300 million people and 100 million of those people are middle/upper middle class (or whatever the math is).

I hope something comes of this but I'm not expecting much from it. Any of this TFC spreading its tendrils action is a step in the right direction.

Its nor good or bad really, strange is what I have to say about it. I was just in Barbados last week, football is pretty low on the radar down there. Sport in Barbados means cricket, its a really small island, land and population (280,000) and I can say I don't think I saw anyone playing footy besides kicking a ball on the beach. Cricket? EVERYWHERE.

Maybe we use it to train in the winters? Always fantastic weather down there and closer than Turkey.

I don't know, I wasn't really being serious...they don't even have any proper footy facilities in Barbados.

Got it.

It doesn't make sense. Like mdc said, in most Caribbean countries cricket is the #1 sport.

Who knows? Maybe some MLSE directors went there on vacation and got drunk and thought maybe it would be a good way to write it off.

I'm from Barbados and I can say I was surprised to hear they had a 'football' team that could compete against Canada and only loose 8-0. Soccer does not have a real place in the island. I can remember kids knocking around a soccer ball but I can't remember any kind of 'house league' soccer for kids. It is certainly a sport that could be devolped in the island and maybe with TFC having an active roll in the process it could be good for the island.

interesting article... so it sounds like TFC might be trying a "all-caribbean" strategy here. Barbados signed on officially, but Bermuda could be next.

interesting about the carribean strategy. i suppose there are a lot of raw talents out there... though I'd like to see links with clubs in T&T and Jamaica. IIRC Guadeloupe does well in Gold Cup too

Well, almost all-caribbean... Bermuda would need to move out of the mid-Atlantic for that to be the case. :D

this is close enough for me ;)
Bermuda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda) and the Turks and Caicos Islands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turks_and_Caicos_Islands) which are found in the Atlantic Ocean are Associate members of the Caribbean Community,

They wanted to join Canada actually, but Brian Mulroney turned them down. :(
Imagine... our very own Caribean Island.
