View Full Version : Carver is Mad about fan ejection...

From the National Post..

Toronto FC coach John Carver was not happy with anybody after his team's 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday.
He even had time to criticize security at BMO Field for ejecting a dissenting fan after TFC's brutal first half.
“You know what? One fan had a go at me," Carver said. "And he was right to have a go at me because I picked that team that played in the first half. And he was ejected from the ground. And that was wrong. I’d like to meet the fan. I want him to come and see me. I’ll speak to him and I’ll make sure he’s OK, because he didn’t deserve that. He paid his money to come and watch the football today, all right? And he’s entitled to his opinion. There’s another story for you.”
Here is hoping that Carver does not have a reservation at a local restaurant tonight. Judging by his mood, he might not tip that generously.

Brilliant. That's all I can say. Carver went fricken ballistic at the 45 minute about the reffing and other game related matters. This speaks to the person behind the title - in my opinion. This is a man of the people.

I saw someone in sec 122 being talked to, then walked out, around the 48/49th minute. Just before, I thought Carver was jawing at the guy. Police and security focused on the guy right after Carver did. Curious...

Ya well, Carver would defend himself against what the guy was saying, but he's right, don't throw the guy out! What is BMO the fucking USSR? People are more than entitled to let the man know what they think.

Anyone spot Carver and the Vancouver coach yelling at each other from their boxes? I saw them arguing with the 4th Ref in between them.

Good for him. Deflect attention onto security...Who cares we lost to these guys

Vancouver Whitecaps -- Jay Nolly, Omar Jarun, Jeff Clarke, Steve Kindel, Takashi Hirano (Diaz Kambere 66), Lyle Martin, Justin Moose, Alfredo Valente (Vincente Arze 74), Martin Nash, Nicholas Addlery, Eduardo Sebrango (Charles Gbeke 75).

Carver showed guts today. Three subs at HT usually isn't a good idea but you know he was pissed about being second best to a lower division side.

And this comment furthers demonstrates Carver's class.

Not what he's doing IMO...what you don't think he cares we lost? You don't think he'd own up to it? Give your head a shake.

Not his fault we played like we thought the game was won before we played it. He put the best 11 we have out there ( or damn near) That was a lack of heart from the boys on the field

Yeah security came and had a talk to him, but he was still sitting there 10 min later. Old guy too, long grey hair...probably 60+

One of the bench coaches (Winsper?) wanted to get into the stands and have a go at him, one of the TFC trainers was holding him back... kinda funny :D

I saw a security guard with him for quite a while - I thought he was walked out eventually (they could have taken him out if inebriated - they've threatened to do that).

The coaches had to be separated at the half, extra security added due to the incident (coaches ).

Carver IMO is pissed.

Carver looked pissed as he left the stadium today.

He usually stops and chats with fans, signs autographs, etc.. but today he waited for a few players to get everyone's attention, then snuck out the other side, and beelined for Winsper's van

That's right, I'm the guy from 122 that got ejected in the 80th minute yesterday.. Why, cuz I stood up and yelled "Carver, you suck!" since he seemed more interested in jawing at the 4th official, rather than inspiring the team. He turned around and started jawing something back at the stands, and I in turn said "Yeah, I said it - you suck!" The next think I know he sends security after me to have be removed from the facility. So Carver is a yellow bellied coward. And I certainly don't by this "He paid his money to come and watch the football today, all right? And he’s entitled to his opinion. There’s another story for you." as mentioned in the not to be named rag. If Carver doesn't like what you have to say, he'll have you removed. I say Carver has gone down a couple of notches in my books. I've watched him rant all year so far and what has he really done to inspire the team???

^^ He's put it out there that he wants to ensure that you are looked after, and everything is made good. If he were a coward, he'd forget about the incident entirely.

You either accept that, and sort it out or fuck off IMO, niot many coaches would extend an offer out like that to a fan.

Sure I'd show up to meet him. Why not. I called him out and he had me tossed, a chicken shit move if you ask me and I'd tell him that and then I would let him know exactly why I said what I said.

Actually, I think he has done a decent job at the start of the season, however the recent form is not great. He seems to have lost the ability to motivate the players, and merely focuses his attention during the games on berating the 4th official, other team coaching staff, his own coaching staff, and now fans. He is paid to motivate the team, just as the players are paid to perform. Neither are happening at the moment and he needs to find a way to re-engage the team back to the form at the start of the season. We've got enough players away this summer on Olympic and WC duties so it's time for him to truly demonstrate his abilities as a coach.

It was a gutsy move for him to substitute three players at the half, but if he had selected a better line-up initially, and he acknowledged that, perhaps the outcome would have been in our favour.

BUT, having a fan ejected for calling him out on it is a chicken shit move, and I think he knows it was.

If adding asswipe is enough to get me tossed, JC should watch his mouth as well. ;) I'll PM you. At least my removal doesn't affect our MLS Fair Play rankings, John's would...

As for entering the field, I'll leave that to the younger folks who can move a bit better than I can. Not that I'm a geezer just yet, but let's say I did see a moon landing.

Ole, I read the inferred smiley, no biggy... Don't knock kids coaches. I helped coach my daughters team for seven years. Professional coaches have it easy, they only have to make three subs, we had to make sure each kid got equal time on the field, and teach them positions, and make sure we had someone bringing snacks. :D But I don't want his job, some yob in the stands is gonna yell at you.

Berating an official happens in sport pal. It’s just one of those regular and inevitable chores of being a coach. All great coaches do it so stop letting it bother you. I agree that fans have every right to say what they want to say given that they have paid their admission fees. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if in your case, Carver simply grew tired of the chastising and yelled at a security guard to straighten you out by way of warning sort of thing versus tossing you out all together. He probably didn’t make his intention for you clear with security thus them not knowing how to deal with the situation and so tossing you seemed appropriate to them. I’m sure if asked at the time, Carver would have said, “Don’t toss the clown, just tell him to shut his yap.” I don’t know this to be fact but I wouldn’t discount the possibility.

Fans don’t deserve to be tossed for your type of behaviour. Verbally warned? Sure, whatever.

Carver has not been here long enough for you to evaluate him as a bad coach nevermind a coward. Go meet the guy for a beer and come back with your assessment.

Is it posible that just maybe Carver has lost some of the TFC players. Fuck man, he treated them like kids and grounded them for the KC games becasue they honoured their international duties. They tied that game, they lost to New Engalnd and now they lost to the ISL whitecaps. Just maybe these players are pissed at Carver just as the fan was.

Maybe I'm reading to much into this but the players haven't been playing they way they are capable of playing. Some of the blame has to go to Carver. He can't treat these players like kids with comments like " I can easily cancel their contracts and send them packing". Well Carver a few more games like this and you'll be sent packing. Stop with all the mind games Carver and just stick to coaching.

MadZap,

I'm with you. Carver is a total coward and in my books a loser. He is coaching in the MLS becasue no other team in England wants him.

He treats his players like kids and even grounded them in the game vs KC because they honoured their international duties. He threatens them with comments like I can easily cancel their contracts and send them home.

Well Carver it appaers to me that you have lost several players in the clubhouse since your stance as being a military dictator. The taem has been playing bad, tieing to the lowly KC, losing to New Engalnd and now the embarrasiing loss to the ISL Whitecaps. All the teams in the Eastern division have caught up to TFC in the standings. The team hasn't been playing inspiring football and the blame has to go to the coach.

And now this tops it all, having a fan, a paying supporter being ejected becasue he doesn't agree with you. Well Carver this only proves to me what I already knew- YOU SUCK and it won't be long before you are gone.

And now this tops it all, having a fan, a paying supporter being ejected becasue he doesn't agree with you. Well Carver this only proves to me what I already knew- YOU SUCK and it won't be long before you are gone.

I think you should walk out on this organization giambac. Run for the hills and never look back.

Yes on both accounts. Paul asked for my contact info and John called today, and as I said, it seems it was just a heat of the moment incident all around. John's willing to meet me face to face at a later date so I'm cool with the situation now.

Class all around then. :D

Blazer, I'm not going to even begin to guess what he said, other than I know how it was interpreted. At the end of the game, cooler heads prevailed, he said to the media it was a mistake and after speaking with him about the incident, I believe the guy. He admitted post game he didn't field the right line-up.

As for calling him a coward, I stand by what I said when I wrote the message originally, it's there for all to witness, however I did retract that it was a chickenshit move on his part. I give the club and JC kudos for following up on his after game remarks, I think most would just let it go, and that's part of what makes this a love affair between supporters and team, the club appears to give a shit about us.

About his coaching abilities, time will ultimately spell that out. Do we say Mo was a bad coach because of his losing record? I doubt many would say that. IMHO, constantly yelling, game after game, at the 4th official will do absolutely nothing for your team, other than brand you as a coach with a hot-head. Has it caused us us to suffer questionable calls? Possibly. Has it brought better play to TFC? Has it been effective in getting away wins? No, so why not drop that tactic and move on. Until there is video replay in soccer, and I hope there never is, then a coach will never get a call reversed. It's a fruitless endeavor.

Cheers!

Other parents? :smilielol5:
I was talking about the parents of the kids we were coaching...

"Why isn't my little Elmo getting extra playing time... can't you see how talented he is?" :taz:

"Yes Sir/Madam... the only problem seems to be Elmo's habit of stopping during the run of play to chat with his friends... pick flowers... watch the train going by or to listen to the instructions you keep yelling at him. But he does well for a six year old" :poke:

Maybe JC will have you placed "out of earshot" ;)

Mark, sorry I meant away from our team's parents, not other teams, we left our wives over in the stands to listen to it all! My favourites were "You know Janey could play Rep, but we don't want her to spend that much time on it" or "Why don't you call the convenor and get them to get us better players". Thankfully once the girls got in to the mid-teens they could drive themselves and most parents just stayed away.

Cheers!

Although I disagree with your assessment of Carver as a coach I commend you on sticking to your guns. We all have our own evaluation and are entitled to that viewpoint.

As far as his fruitless endeavour while arguing balls and strikes, you have to understand that coaches don’t argue to have calls overturned rather to have the next questionable call made in their favour as an “even up” call. When referees (who are at the end of the day human) feel pressure from one party are faced with a questionable call that could go either way, believe me – they unconsciously take into consideration the flak that they receive from managers.

Shut the fuck up already, it seems every one of your posts has something to do with your lil hate-on for Carver and it's the same whining and bitching over and over. The guy has lost 2 games and you're coming up with all this garbage...do everyone a favour and STOP watching pro-sports, or just stop discussing your ridiculous opinions on here.

Giambac's hatred for Carver is all the more reason to love and respect our coach!

Bobby Robson: Robson told the Daily Mirror: "He's a mighty fine coach.

"Newcastle (http://www.football.co.uk/newcastle_united/index.shtml) have parted company with a top man. I was sorry to see him go as I know what the club meant to him."

"He's a Geordie who bled black and white. I always thought that was the type of person they wanted at the club.

"If I ever get back into management, the first thing I will do is bring John in as my right-hand man. That's how highly I rate him.

"I know he's looking to break into management. I wouldn't hestitate in giving him a glowing reference."

Hmmm. Bobby Robson or Giambac, Bobby Robson or Giambac .... I think Robson knows a little bit more about the game.

I can't help myself!

He's coaching pros...not kids. Granted we don't get the whole story, but from the outside it looks like he losing them...or at least will soon if we don't start winning again. Since he seems to be all over the place it's logical to assume that he'll get tuned out soon.

He seems to be full of hot air and pros see that and tune that out.
Hot air like:
1. I don't care who you are or how much you're paid I'm going to play the best 11 (pre-season)....then magically he contradicts himself during the season and says he won't change a winning line up. Which is it? Best players or don't change a winning line up or sound bite for the media (hot air)??
2. No more letting players go for friendlies . Nice in principle, fired up the fans...but after the players checked their blackberrys it was probably obvious he pulled the same hot air stunt. Pop quiz...now that WCQ has started...when's the next friendly? 2011?? All the games from here on out will be qualifiers on FIFA dates. So he ranted and raved for nothing but to get some attention and blow off some steam. (hot air).
3. You get the 4th official crap and the DVD. You get the histrionics on the sideline every game...the "look at me I'm yelling". Now he's getting into it with fans. You're telling me pros aren't going to laugh at this and say "who the fuck is this guy?" and tune him out. (hot air). It might work on some 16 yr old but a pro that's been around won't buy that act for a second.
4. The closed door meeting after the Houston game that Robbo talked about in his Welsh column. Now suddenly we've got Mo saying you can't play for ties in MLS...and then apparently we've got a new change in strategy when we go to NER. Pure speculation but more cause for concern.
5. Now the whole blow up and "I'll cancel contracts" hot air. Let's see it. You can yell and scream and threaten all you want...but pros know the score. You have to back it up or else you'll get tuned out. Hot air.

Look. When you're a coach you have to have the players buy what you're selling.
Maybe the sound bites and yelling on game days will win the fan's affections....but it's a risky game to play with professional athletes...before you know it...your mouth is moving but they don't hear a thing and they show up and cash their checks...and your checks stop coming because you're looking for work.

Now don't get pissy and respond by saying "we're better than last year" "why are you so negative" "we shouldn't fire Carver" because I'm not saying anything of the sort.

I think we've made progress...thanks to Mo, Carver and Winsper. Good progress. We are better than last year. I don't think we should fire Carver.

I'm just making the point that all this yelling and chest thumping and threats and sound bites, with no back up or follow through, is going to sell newspapers and win fans...but eventually...professional athletes that have been around will see through it and tune it out.

That's my beef with the squad selection policies. He's contradicted himself, and made up some arbitrary rule that has nothing about putting the best players on the field and winning. Because of that I have concerns that the team will see through it, as tripe, and he'll lose them.

I'm with you on this one.

TFC has made alot of progress since last year. Mostly do to the signings by Mo Johnson. I'm just concerned that Carver's actions will lose the team if he already hasn't. I just can't understand what the love affair is with Carver.

Except Carver has been calling all the shots on players since he got here, save Guevara.

I like Carver. He doesn't baby the guys, he calls them out (like he should), he sticks to his guns. If a player wants to have a pisstake because his feelings are hurt... I don't know why you would defend them.

Carver is MAD and period.
...Don;t get me wrong he is a HUge upgrade on Mo. But i find his tactics and his game phylosophy very amateur.

Who ta heck does 3 changes at the half??? there is no coach would ever do that in other league.

1) i think if you want to bring change into the game 2 subs is MORE than enough o switch the game around. I would even say that one would have made the deal
2) what if someone gets injured??? What then? you play a men down.
3) taking robert off.. was the dumbest move... come on at this level of the game we know how he plays... we know that he doesn;t track back, or plays on the defence. He didn;t do much dfensively not once this season. Deal with it. At his age you aren;t going to change him... it;s like Asking Riquelme to be quicker and more agile. That's his style of play and he should accept that. but on the otehr hand,... he has a rifle and he has great crosses and long balls that can be lethal for the oposing team.
4)why the heck did we have FIVE!!! defenders?? Are you freaking kidding me? Vancuver did not outplayed us... they got a lucky penalty and that was it.

It happens more often than you think. Making changes at half sends a clear message to those guys that their efforts were amateur.

What deal? The changes he made turned the game around. Did you miss the first half?

Yes, you play a man down.

It wasn’t working for Robert. He was taken off because he was virtually useless in the first half.

Did you see us playing a defensive game in the second leg? No. TFC was all offence.

Not sure what game you were watching, but we had 4. Jimmy was moved up to mid when James came in.

I do agree though that Robert should've stayed on. I'm not sure why he was taken off. I didn't see him playing particularly bad but I didn't get to watch the game again on Tele as I forgot to record the game.

Sounds like Carver admitted to when he made some mistakes (lineup and getting involved with fan). Imagine that... the guy is human. And a decent human being at that.

As a home town fan I have lived through the birth and first of many faltering steps of a professional sports franchise. It takes a while for an organization to get an identity and grounded approach to running the business. I think that TFC is off to a good start and is headed in the right direction.

Humility is the sign of a great coach. Not a useless one who takes credit for what isn't his victory, like Fabio Capello.

I hope they do make the playoffs. all I know is that if it wasn't for Carver's bad decisions this team would have at least 5-6 more points this year (if noyt more) and our playoff chances would be better.

I heard that he is so pised with his players that he is seriously thinking of using 11 players from the academy team for the next league match.
