Actually, fewer articles are written.

One article printed...in many papers. Read them all, they're identical.

Its the same for all leagues.

Look at the NHL on NBC. Or the fact that HNIC is the Leafs almost every weekend. Or which teams play on the ABC NBA broadcasts.

Agreed.

Didn't we get an ESPN game against New York recently? At night in the rain at BMO?

None this year is kinda lame.

What he said.

TV puts the teams on that will give them the best chance at ratings.

Good morning all,

I would just like to say thank you to Stefan Frei and the Toronto Sun for their perception of pre-season training from Antalya Turkey. Stefan's journalistic ability is insightful and to the point. The reporting was informative and, gave a creditable inside look at the team. So if you frequent the RPB web sit, I hope you continue writing from the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic and the Charleston round robin tournament.

Great Job Stefan!

They are showcasing their gems, can't fault the league for that one. I will contend though, a great game trumps a great crowd. But no one is going to give an MLS game that kind of chance.

MLS has to show Seattle, LA, and NY. If you ran the show at ESPN2, how would you do it differently? Remember network execs/programmers are not there to hand-hold soccer to the next level. They are there to sell advertising.

The fact that only 245,000 average viewership sounds really bad. But its ESPN2, what are the averages of other sports on that channel? Maybe for ESPN2, that's a huge draw? Lets compare apples to apples.

For me, if its an out of market game to watch. I choose to watch a game with a packed stadium.

^ For me, I'd be putting the teams in that play well. LA would undoubtedly be in the mix, so would Seattle. But RSL, Dallas and Columbus...as much as I am loathe to say it...would all be in the mix too.

This.

I just see the same CP article over and over again.

That's not CP. Very few newspapers subscribe to CP anymore; it's now a private company that concentrates on supplying on a spot basis, but the biggest papers just rewrite the original TFC story, to save money.

Go read the one on TFC's site, then read all the others. They've just lifted it (and in the process, shortened it to remove the red card references, the kind of nuance readers actually care about.)

Great article..

Only in the USA...and they wonder why reality bites.

I imagine there's more to this than people are considering. For one, if they're not on the national broadcast, TFC can control all of their field-side advertising, instead of having to lose that revenue to league-wide advertising.

Given how poor ESPN2s ratings are right now for soccer, they might be happy to let it slide, comfortable that it will become more plural once interest in the game picks up. Not sure if it's the right strategy, but I know MLSE was frustrated by how much money it was losing to national advertising restraints.

Sorry, Jeremy.

Back in my day it was CP... LOL Or AP in the States.

What agency do they use now? Reuters? I know Sun Media has their own (QMI).

Many of the articles today on the Dinamo game say "The Canadian Press" at the top: the CBC article, Globe and Mail, the Star, and Sportsnet. Does TFC provide their press release to "The Canadian Press" and they distribute it?

When TFC provides a release, they also place it on their website as such.
This article probably resulted from information released by the club, but wasn't a press release.

It has basically devolved into a series of low-rent content providers, and a few decent agencies (of which CP is one). There's not much consistency, people use whoever's cheapest.

CP probably did a rewrite of the TFC story, supplemented it with a few additional questions to the club. Doubtful they had anyone there. But yeah, several papers are still using them They're pretty good, by modern standards.
