Another trialist has been added to Toronto FC’s training camp in Turkey. Dutch Midfelder Elbekay Bouchiba will start today’s match against Red Star Belgrade as part of a three man midfield.

Bouchiba, 32, has played most of his career in the Netherlands and spent time with AZ Alkmaar, Sparta Rotterdam and FC Twente. In 2007 he moved to play in Qatar with Al-Wakrah Sports Club.

Toronto FC v. Red Star Belgrade - Match Report

Second half lineup and reports coming up ...

Toronto 1-0 Red Star - HT
Stinson 41'

Toronto FC are leading 1-0 against Red Star Belgrade at half time of their second preseason game in Antalya, Turkey. Academy product Matt Stinson scored the only goal of the half in the 41st minute.

In a closely fought contest, Toronto stood strong in defence but found it difficult to break down a well organized Serbian team until they found the breakthrough four minutes before half time.

Ahead of the match, Toronto FC added a new trialist to their training camp roster, 32-year-old Dutch midfielder Elbekay Bouchiba. He was named in the starting lineup along with fellow trialists David Monsalve, Nick Soolsma and Javier Martina.

Toronto’s first attack came in the 7th minute when trialist goalkeeper David Monsalve started an attack quickly from the back. His ball out to SuperDraft pick Demitrius Omphroy got the Reds moving down the right wing but when the ball was crossed towards Maicon Santos, the Brazilian striker couldn’t make contact.

Red Star Belgrade used the wings effectively with their early possession, but TFC broke on the counter attack in the 12th minute when Oscar Cordon played in Maicon who shot just wide of the post from the edge of the penalty area.

Just after the half hour, Monsalve made a good save from a close range shot by Red Star to keep the game goalless, and soon after Ashtone Morgan did well in a one-on-one battle to halt the Red Star winger.

Maicon went close again for Toronto in the 39th minute but this time saw his header deflected just wide following a good cross from Soolsma.

The goal came in the 41st minute when Stinson got on the end of a good attacking play from Toronto. Maicon played a through ball to Martina who crossed to Stinson. The former Winthrop midfielder scored off the post to give the Reds the lead.

Toronto FC introduced another new trialist for the start of the second half. English born defender Chris Hunter 23, played for UC Santa Barbara in 2010.

Hunter came into the match at left back as Aron Winter made 11 changes.

Second half line up:
Milos Kocic, Dan Gargan, Ty Harden, Doneil Henry, Chris Hunter, Matt Gold, King Osei Gyan, Gianluca Zavarise, Bas Ent, Keit Makubuya, Joao Plata

Who is Makubuya?

The best part of this info is that Red Star sounds it's play a little more like a MLS side might, with a fairly physical game, so it's a better view of what we can expect. I'm sure they aren't playing their top players, but I'm excited about the coming year.

Florida will be interesting. hopefully the second half does well too.

I watched as much as I could of the combine matches, and can't remember how many times I heard the announcers call Plata's name. He was all over the place, like how Theoren Fleury used to do with the Flames.

And they mentioned how that despite the fact he knew little english, he was quite vocal with his teamates and simply wanted to do his best out there.

This guy oozes positivity, and has the potential to become a huge fan favorite.

Looking at their records, they're okay, but nothing to write home about either.

Players with okay records come into this league and do well, and players with stellar track records come in and flop.

It's the ability of our new staff to identify the right targets that will make or break this team, not big name DP vs unknown person.

We need depth if we are going to compete, especially if we are going in seriously for the Nutralite cup and CL. I don't think a big name big salary signing is the answer.

Everything I've ever read or heard about this system is that it is about TEAM not individuals. Bear in mind today's result was without DeRo, JDG or Frei...our top three players.
Winter and co will build a squad first..then supplement with a DP in the right spot if the right guy is available for the right money.

yes, that's my thinking on this too. If they can find some diamonds in the rough now, even better. Our noname signings guys in the past tended to be lumps of coal once we found out about them.

If we can satisfy a hole with a noname player at a low salary, then great. Then go for a DP, as you say, but there's no need to be taken hostage by an agent for that.

I found it interesting in one of the videos that a TFC player (labrocca?) said that it seemed like they had all played together already. Good sign that the system is working. Nana was gushing like a schoolgirl in one video about how much he was learning in 1 week.

If you look at the highlights, this game definitely could've ended 3-0 for us. There's the near-miss Maicon Santos shot in the first half, and they ripped Red Star open on a counter in the second half, only to goof it up with one pass too many. It's easy on the eyes, this new style.

Translated game report from Red Star website. (Was looking for Red Star lineup)

Red Star against Toronto played a bad game and certainly caused many headaches Robert Prosinecki. Toronto won thanks to the goal in the 41st minute, although we can not say that something is particularly pointed out the game. Repetition of the situation is worrying that the opponent from the first serious attack scores.

Our team has performed with the following members:

Stamenkovic, Binić (65 'Stojkovic), Mikic, Cosic, Ignjatijević, Isah, Milovanovic (65' Bogdanovic), Vešović, Lazovic, Perovic (45 'Jevtic) and Trifunovic

The first half brought the initiative for our team, but it was a game with no chance.
The first was our team was only in 31
minute, but up close Trifunovic failed to score after goalkeeper Toronto was successful.

In 39th minute Maicon was a bit off target.
This is only a prelude for the event at 41
minute. The action started Maicon, Martina, who went behind his back Binić. There followed a sharp center to the heart of the penalty area, where Stinson was faster than Ignjatijević ball into the net after it bounced off the goal post.

The second half brought a big nothing when it comes to Star game, and Robert Prosinecki will certainly have something to say to their players. It has been shown that some deep-rooted habits and still difficult to eliminate in front of our coach and his coaching staff has a long way.
And not just during this season.

Plata looks very fast and active... good engine. At the very least he's gotta be on the team for the reserve league.

Looks a bit like Aaron Lennon on the ball

Don't know what that roster is like. I do see a few former Serbian U-21s on the team but none that made it to the senior team.

The first was our team was only in 31 minute, but up close Trifunovic failed to score after goalkeeper Toronto was successful.

In 39th minute Maicon was a bit off target. This is only a prelude for the event at 41 minute.

Um yeah, sounds good to me...:D

Video's up: http://torontofc.neulion.com/tfc/console.jsp

There some really exciting plays going on. The kid Martina (39) has to be signed. Mad skills. Same as Plata. Very encouraging to see.

Agreed, there were some sweet moves on the wings today. It's nice to see a much better camera angle for the video highlights today.

Martina definately looks impressive. Although I'll remind everyone that Johann Smith looked impressive at first glance as well. Things are looking up on the left wing though if he's as good as the highlights show.

Also, I wouldn't put too much into the highlights as far as determining who was the better team out there. Someone said in this thread we could've won 3-0. Come on guys, the only highlights you are seeing are obviously the ones that make us look good. Nothing wrong with that except we don't really get a good feel for the game possession. The minute by minute updates made it sound like we were defending quite a bit.

IIRC he played on the right wing in the first preseason game, as well as in the Dutch highlight video, so he must be able to play both sides.

interesting highlights ....I almost blinked twice to make sure I was actually watching TFC play. While highlights are a quick snapshot and show off the "best" they still showed players actually positioning themselves and trying to create unique opportunities.

Lets see what happens when the roster stabilizes. Though I do agree its nice to see a coach speak candidly about what is and is not working.

You've see them all play enough to know what they bring to the table, and how they will fit in with the new system I assume to make such a bold statement.

Actually he wanted to award DP status to Peterson.

Like others, I'm really impressd with Martina and Plata... and for those of you who say they are just showing the best plays.. Martina made what like 5 or 6 nice plays in the first half that they showed with an assist.. reguardless of how much they showed, thats some pretty decent production in one half of play..

My excitement for this season is building on a daily basis.

As far as the quality of the starting lineups are concerned, it was a level playing field in both matches. In that regard, TFC performed well above my expectations and the results should not be trivialized. Of course it is premature to make any bold declarations at this point, but the signs are definitely encouraging thus far...

This is an article from Red Star site.

Crvena Zvezda: Stamenkovic, Mikic, Cosic, Ignjatijević, Binici (of 65 Stojkovic), Isah, Milovanovic (Bogdanovic of 65), Lazovic, Vešović, Perovic (over 45 Jevtic), Trifunovic.

TORONTO: Davis, attacks, Kam, Morgan, Bušimba, Stinson, Gordon, Santos, Sulsma, Martin, Omroj.
They played again, Kocic, Gargan, Harden, Henry, Gold Plate, Zavaris, Mukubaja, Hunter, Ent, King.

After a draw and win, our team has tasted defeat in the preparations in Antalya. On the ground the hotel Callisto red and white were lost to Toronto, Canada - 1:0 (1:0). The next control the match Rangers game on Tuesday, a rival would be her Univerzitatea from Cluj.

First Half did not bring much excitement. The fight is mainly waged between two of the penalty area and most of the fighting was treated with our team. Relatively easy to have won the red-white ground, holding the ball, but missed their final pas. Vešović was pretty inevitable for their guards and some he missed that assists Milovanovic after being awarded a goal for the effort. Now on the other side retorted Toronto, but fortunately our team, Santos was off target. Also, lacking precision and Trifunovic at age 30 minute - went Ignjatijević the left side, center the, but our striker could not find my way. While generally harmless, rival managed to reach the leadership. At 41 minute, he was at the left side Santos, Stinson was employed, where there was hardly a few meters from matts Stamenkovic.

Even less was happening below. Rivals have compete, were fighting, however difficult they came to the penalty area. Lots of running, a lot of penetration and almost anything else. As our team is concerned, most likely acted in action 62nd minute, when Trifunovic downed in the penalty area, but the judge is not to show the white point. Towards the end, after a corner kick that brought Bogdanovic, Mikic found himself in a position, immediately followed by Jevtic, but both lacked precision.

- We played as we imagined. Toronto has proven to be an aggressive rival. Losses at this stage is not big deal, can actually be good for the team - said coach Robert Prosinecki.

The highlights were impressive, at least in terms of the wide play. I'll feel better about the team when see a little more in terms of the centre forward play and some evidence that things are improving in terms of the RB and LB positions. The highlights from this game made the team look pretty cohesive in terms of their play, maybe they're picking up Winter's system quicker than expected.

I didn't hear that. One thing he mentioned, when there's no way forward in one part of the field, the guys need be quicker to switch the play to the other side (or to the middle).

^^ I heard that as well... It was kind of hard to understand him, but I think he was referring to what auzzy was talking about... When theres no room to move forward on the right they must be quicker to move the ball to the middle or left.. that was my take.

If the highlights from the RSB match on TFC TV are to be believed, he's going to be a monster in this league!
Him on the left and Dero on the right in a 4-3-3...i like!

he shows the qualities necessary of a true winger- something we havent seen in Toronto since the start (even the league is well known to have a shortage of quality wingers). Given his education (Ajax) and young age he would make a quality signing, without the hefty pricetag of a more "well known" player. Mid to high 100K's should do it.

Perhaps guys like Peterson and Labrocca might have to be sacrificed in order to sign a few quality trialists, especially if more players emerge among the new trialists in Florida. Otherwise, I don't think TFC's current available cap space is enough to fill out the roster with great depth...

didnt think money would be an issue for what looks like a starting player according to reports from camp? Surely he has to be offered more than Peterson (150K?). The rest of the terms im sure could also be fixed to eliminate the confusing MLS rules for foreign players.

You mean SIGMA FC Academy? Interesting....they have strong ties back to Amsterdam and been bringing Ajax and Dutch coaches here for years, maybe even Winter and De Klerk. I also remember them getting interviewed by the Footy Show when new coaches announced. I guess they are ones behind Dutch invasion at TFC

Wow what a change from a panic long ball kicks from one of last seasons useless fullbacks, plenty of touches on the ball, triangular passing, back passes etc. The game looked almost smooth and also great to watch. It will be cool to see the players as they finalize the team. So different from last years last minute additions.

Like others I am liking the look of Martina & Plata, Guevera-like moves, holding the ball well, etc, positive. All this with others to come in in Florida.

What is with the TFC website slow slow slow, I'm not even in the same time zone and it is still slow. If it stays this way streaming video will be an exercise in frustration.

Yes it is Sigma FC Academy,

De Clerk was suppose to run their summer camp last year, but he canceled in last minute,he was called up to coach Ajax reserve team. The whole SIgma program is set up "Ajax way" all teams are playing 4-3-3 and the whole set up is like in Holland.
Sigma is affiliate with SEG,so this deal might be going trough SEG I don't know the details.
