Because we know this will spawn a million and a half threads hopefully we can keep the discussion to this one.

Any thoughts on what will be announced? Will this be an all fluff - oh my happy times press conference? Will they at least provide answers that fans of the sport can appreciate it or will they tailor the language to your average joe.

and commence discusssioooooon...now

I will speculate they will introduce all the players we're missing and free pie for everyone!

I hope the presser reveals a lot, and that people push for solid answers.

I think it will spark a bunch of topics.

-I'm sure the DeRo fiasco will be brought up... how will they respond? I'm sure DeRo will input as well.

-Winter mentioned a 'second DP' maybe he will elaborate a little.

-DeGuzman injury update

-Potential Trialists... will any details slip out?

weird.

will DeRo be taking the mic?

If so, will anyone have the stones to ask him some hard questions?

I mean I wasn't hoping for a "5 year plan speech" but just something...what is the TFC style of football that he sees now based on the roster he has or is trying to build.

They say they have trialists great..but what do they bring to the table and how does it fit in the grand scheme of things.

fdasilva
01-26-2011, 10:51 AM
Nana Attakora the first player...

Attakora saying without direction he didn't want to commit. He is more secure now. This is the first coaching team that's actually asked the players if they're okay with the direction they want to take.

With AW's desire to not sign Cann or Attakora until he sees them, it does bode well as Cann was a very one dimensional, albeit excellent, aerial defender. Attakora I think will fit in.

I won't dispute that DeRo was selfish at times last season, but he is very capable of distributing the ball. It's a question of his willingness to do so within the system with more capable forwards as a supporting cast. that would be for the best. Whatever they say and do in private, they need to at least come out with some kind of unified statement explaining things to a certain extent, if not going into details of what happened, at least presenting a unified front for the future. What I'm willing to do is promise you (and put it out in the open or get a signed agreement done) that we will be willing to look at your contract after the 2011 season.
Now if you're happy with that, we can move forward. If you're not, let me know and we'll deal with it because if you're not on board at this moment or you think it will be an issue throughout the season, tell me now."

Yes, if that quote about his contract "not be renegotiated" is true and firm then this should be over. It has been up to the team (or MLS whoever owns the contract) form the very beginning. It has always seemed like TFC management have been uncertain or unclear about what they wanted.

As I suggested, it sounds like an alternative is being discussed that will supplement his existing contract...

Then it appears Mariner and DeRo aren't on the same page with Winter.

Unless they're working on some sort of non-cap hit bonus... if that's possible.

If that is, I don't have an issue with it provided that bonus is, ideally, also tied into a team bonus.

Dero as a #10 is going to be a fail of epic proportions, hopefully hes one of the forwards.

While it's been part of his personality in the past, it's also currently not in his interest to say "I've accepted the contract will not be renegotiated." By telling the media that it's still up in the air, he's stoking the drama. Stoking the drama, in turn, lowers his value in any potential trade because no one wants "personality problems in the locker room."

That sort of crimps the options available to Winter & Co. They may want to move him, but they want a great return. So what's the answer? "If we can't get max value from dumping him, we should just take the hit, give him the bonus and have him stay on another year." DeRo wins.

Why not? DeRo has reported to the club. DeRo has stated that he looks forward to working under Aron Winter and Paul Mariner's tutelage. While I agree that they could work out a bonus arrangement, it does sound like TFC FO believes it to be settled per the quote in the star.

To come out a day later and say it isn't, well, that's telling if you believe the quote yesterday.

That's another contradiction from both camps in the span of a few weeks.

But, let's go with the assumption that the base contract won't change and that they are looking at a bonus arrangement. That the quote from TFC reflects the base salary and that DeRo's quote today reflects the bonus discussion that is being proposed.

What if the offer isn't enough to make it "settled" in DeRo's mind? What are the options then?

It seems as though Mariner formally approached MLS regarding renegotiating DeRo's contract and was rejected. DeRo was allowed to trial at Celtic but no transfer fee was offered. I would say his options are limited at this point. He will either accept whatever Mariner and Winter are able to come up with to augment his income (as per his current contract), or hold out. I don't see him holding out...

Again, if Kelly's quote is true and that management insists he has accepted the fact that his contract will not be renegotiated, why indicate that it isn't settled?

Yea, I'd like this issue to be settled as well.
From what I saw/heard from the online feed is, it's still an issue. There's no definitive position/statement. MeRo is going to continue being MeRo.

Whoopee's comment at 12:51 would work for me.

And there's no direct quote in the Kelly piece. It's Kelly being Kelly.
"Behind the scenes, Toronto FC’s management insists that De Rosario has accepted that his contract will not be renegotiated from its current value, about $500,000 annually. "
Which member of the TFC Mgmt team was it?

bah - stupid DeRo - again he does nothing to endear himself to supporters. He goes and says we can't give up on our local team... he should expect the same amount of loyalty that he has shown us...

...and then he comments how a query into his relationship with management is a 'dangerous question'.

He's always got to have the last word.

I pray that we can sign and dump him.

DeRo is dead to me.

to be honest, I would love if this whole Celtic-Gate thing could be water under the bridge.

move past the problems, move past the Mo era, move past the uncertainty of this off season and just got out there and win!

Yes. Winter has already said DeRo is a core player.

Just to clarify, DeRo's response was in regards to the previous regime and the fan backlash to his trial at Celtic. He did the right thing by not elaborating further and adding fuel to the fire...

^^ DeRo plays best as a withdrawn striker. Not a classic striker, not a classic #10 (even if he wore that # in Houston).

I don't get why some people are so intent hating on the guy.

I’d say he’s a great soccer player and bad businessman. As a fan I can separate his off-field business from his on-field play.

I've met him in person and he's really nice guy. I’ve met lots of good people, who are very talented in some way, and yet are very bad at business. As an outside observer I would say that Dwayne is probably one of those people.

Obviously he lacks a little PR polish, but I think that just makes him more credible. If he had more polish he'd be better at spin. Dwayne doesn’t spin, that’s his PR weakness, he's actually too open, honest and transparent about his emotions and feelings.

He's made a public mess of what should have been a private matter (his personal contract situation). Maybe he felt like 'going public' with his displeasure this was a good business strategy? No doubt, he could have handled it better.

why is making as much money as possible to feed your family and pay for their education a problem.

His career is ending, he needs to make as much money as possible now.

Id do the same thing. At the end of the day Club soccer is a business, nothing more nothing less.

I think most supporters can understand that pro athletes are just mercenaries.

But they don't want that fact they're mercenaries pushed in their faces.

I mean if athletes are just mercenaries, teams can't ask that their supporters be loyal to the cause.

Sports are predicated on "doing the home team proud", "playing for the badge", "playing for the love of the game" all those cliches. If it's "strictly business" and "I have to feed my family" or "I have to maximize my earning potential when I can" then the sports industry just collapses.

Fine, all players are whores but you don't want to be caught sleeping with a whore. Or fall in love with a whore.

So you end up just leaving or not getting involved and athletes and teams don't want that to happen.

yeah, it's a business to some degree. with that in mind, he has signed a contract and should live up to it.

But if TFC fans thought of this as just a business we'd all have quit supporting the team a long time ago.
