Just what the fuck does Cantona bring to the table that will benefit this phantom team in a constructive manner? This looks like style over substance.

A Frenchman in America?..That'll go over well...

but seriously, other than the french beach soccer team, what management background does Cantona have? I don't remember hearing anything about him running a club in the past?

hahaha.

looking like king shit, slouching, tie undone, looking like he just finished is 4th bottle of champaigne and HOW DARE another bottle is not line up at the ready.

This should be fun.

If they get the MLS franchise.. it will be interesting to see a dude like that stay within the cap... he'll go insane in 2 years. (and I can read all that just in looking at how he sits) ;.)

I don't get the relentless philosophy that just hiring a guy who used to be a good player, means they will be a good coach or director.

What experience off the pitch does Cantona have? Any at all? And combine that with the rats nest of MLS roster and cap restrictions he will have to navigate as director - this should be fun to watch.

I'd believe he's deliberately lampooning himself here. I'm quite looking forward to it.

Now all we Garber has to do is to make sure he doesn't have any Tulsa Roughnecks to go along with his NY Cosmos. The league can't take that sort of imbalance.

I don't think Beckham is eligible to put a team in NY or LA

I don't think Beckham is eligible to put a team in NY or LA

as I understand it, that just has to do with his contractual option on getting an MLS team. He could still buy in to a NY or LA team if its not via his option.

(from Backham/Cosmos thread)

FWIW...

From ESPN Soccer - November 29, 2010

"The Beckham Factor
No matter how natural the fit would seem and no matter how poetic a Galactico leaving the Galaxy to take over the Cosmos would be, David Beckham is one person the Cosmos will not be adding to its ranks. Byrne might be his best friend, Kemsley a fellow Londoner, and Beckham himself the owner of a contractual option allowing him to take control of an MLS franchise when his playing career ends, but the Cosmos won't be the one.

"Although David does have certain rights for a team in the future, those rights do not include a team in the New York market," Abbott said. (According to Byrne, Beckham's option also excludes the Los Angeles area.)

"Everybody says, 'Are you just doing this for David?'" Byrne said. "David's been my friend for 20 years. I'm godfather to his kids. He's godfather to my son. We're best of friends. But that doesn't mean that what I'm doing is for David."

Hiring Eric Cantona as director of soccer for a prospective MLS expansion team is the equivelant of hiring Jose Canseco as director of baseball for a prospective MLB team.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

depends on how much power they gave him, and how much his assistant DoS will do. Wouldn't surprise me if he was hired more as an attraction generating figurehead who'll learn the role as he goes.
