Some interesting news from around the league:

D.C. United has renewed its hunt for a stadium in the District, and has discussed "at least four" sites with city officials, according to team president Kevin Payne.
In an interview, Payne declined to name or comment on sites but a leading contender, according to city officials, is Buzzards Point in Southwest Washington, where developer Akridge owns nine acres southwest of the Nationals' ballpark.

the cosmos article is quite interesting. its interesting that throughout both of their academies they are also stressing Total Football.

I for one, hope they get the MLS franchise they're looking for in 2013.

In the current issue of FourFourTwo, they have a full page ad for the 2011 New York Cosmos shirts, replicas of the old ones worn by the Cosmos. It loooks like a concerted attempt to reintroduce the brand.

No Team? No Games? If You Are The Cosmos, So No Problem (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joe-favorito/no-team-no-games-if-you-a_b_809109.html)

Wouldn't this scenario be an MLSE dream... capture the imagination and $ of a dedicated group of fans that love a logo or image of a long since dead past, and and make money off it without even fielding a team.

Oh ya, that's the Leafs.

Ryan has done his show ICF for years now. I suppose these means it's linked at metro? Or is this a show with different content?

Better get used to it. Garber is adamant that the 20th team in MLS will be in NYC, and the potential investors are lined up. It's only a matter of time before the NY Cosmos extend their brand onto the pitch once again, which should be a boost to MLS in it's largest market. As many have suggested, the Red Bulls will always have difficulty capturing America's largest market based in New Jersey...

should be interesting to see how it goes, also curious to see if they will focus more off the field than on (leading to disaster), something about it feels so phony. id like to see the NYC market mental for soccer but i dont think itll happen (hope im wrong)

If they "bring back" the New York Cosmos, it'll be looked at as just another MLS expansion team, period. Anyone who thinks that by bringing the name back means they'll pick up where they left off is nuts. Everything about MLS was designed not to have a similar situation with the old Cosmos.

if you can't attract 20,000 people in the middle of a city with 10,000,000. then your doing something wrong

i.e something = stadium in new jersey in the middle of no where that takes a 1 hour subway ride and name it after an energy drink

I've been by the stadium, it's like 8 subway stops from the middle of the city. It's not like it's in Barrie, more like it's in Etobicoke.

I agree with you.

But quite frankly, MLS will go to any reasonable market with the ability to pay a franchise fee and a decent stadium plan. That's why a 2nd NY team is being discussed.

At this time there really are no other markets line up, unless I missed something.

RBA is not in the middle of nowhere. It is a 10 min walk from Newark and one of the largest Portuguese/Brazilian neighborhoods in the region. The Harrison stop is on the PATH train line which is 20 minutes from lower Manhattan, you can see RBA from the Harrison train stop, 10 min walk. It may be a long haul for some, but certainly not all metro New Yorkers. I'm not aiming this at you, CR, but rather all the New Yorkers who won't travel 1/2 hr to support MLS in the nicest soccer stadium in the US. Fuck them.

I was in NYC in the fall for a family function and rented a car while I was there. My wife and I drove past Harrison at one point. I would compare the location of Red Bull Arena relative to Manhattan to BMO Field being located in Mississauga.

I guarantee that if TFC played out of Mississauga, the average attendance would be less than 15K...

I think that the problem is that the major living centres for normal people - the boroughs, the community neighbourhoods etc. are East of Manhattan. It's probably not a good idea to bank on the people who live in lower Manhattan to support a soccer team..its just not something that has cache in that wealthy lifestyle. For the millions of people who live East of Manhattan, its a pain in the ass to get to New Jersey...its geographically close, but requires going through (or around) the downtown area of NYC.

+1, you got it.

It's not that there aren't people in range of RBA, it's that there's a shit load of people who are not. And that unserved population is alone much bigger than most potential markets.

I was thinking the same thing. I guess the team could be branded as the NJ Red Bulls but I think the NJ Devils have proven that attendance will be a struggle in that market even with a winning franchise...

building a 30-40K soccer stadium in New York makes sense, as one doesn't exist now (the NFL stadium, which is really the only place to play soccer on a grand scale around there, is in Jersey). the Mets own the land next door to the baseball stadium. Might as well put it to good use.

Yeah, I know. It does take forever to get from LaGuardia Airport in the Bronx to lower Manhattan. If they build in the Bronx, people in Brooklyn will say its too far. In any case, seems like Garber and MLS board has already on going in this direction. It would take a major fail on the part of the Cosmos ownership group to derail this. To this point I've considered the Cosmos project to be a shell game but Grant Wahl's interview with Terry Byrne has led me to take it more seriously. Kemsley and Byrne are dodgy characters but they seem like they are doing what they said they would do.

Yeah ok that does make sense now. I thought you meant that they were going to build a new stadium for the Mets that the Cosmos could use as well. My bad. Carry-on

In the summer I was in NY and went to a Mets Phillies game. I was staying near Central Park. It took an hour and 15 to get to new Shea, or whatever it's called. If the travel was the issue, it's STILL the issue.

It would be nice for once for Toronto FC to sign some good people.
