Toronto FC winger Nicholas Lindsay will undergo surgery on Wednesday after suffering a serious knee injury during the offseason.

Lindsay, 18, will require two different surgical procedures over the next few months and is expected to miss the 2011 season. The second surgery is set to take place in four to six months and it is hoped he will then recover in time for the 2012 season.

“Nicholas made huge strides in the short time he has been with the team and has a bright future ahead of him,” said Earl Cochrane, Toronto FC Director of Team and Player Operations. “We will support him with everything he needs to make a full recovery.”

Lindsay became the second Toronto FC Academy player to graduate to the senior team when he signed his first professional contract on September 15, 2010. He made his Major League Soccer debut on October 2, 2010 against Seattle Sounders F.C. and assisted on one of the team’s goals in the 3-2 defeat. He went on to make a total of four league appearances and register three assists.

Meanwhile, Toronto FC midfielder Julian de Guzman continues to recover from a routine operation to repair his meniscus that took place at the end of the 2010 season. He will be assessed by the medical team when he returns for preseason but is expected to be able to take part in training camp.

Wow, sounds like ACL and MCL reconstruction... could even be the "Unhappy Triad", which ended Mike Van Ryn's career (Leafs defenseman).

We have had bad luck with youngsters, but TFC takes care of them. They always make sure they put the health of the player ahead of the team (Zac Herold).

crap, wish him all the best in his surgery and recovery

At least in today's world of sports medicine we see many more athletes make full recoveries from what would have ended careers even as little as 10 years ago. Let's hope this is the case for Nicholas.

Bad news day for TFC so far.

Ouch....I called mine the "holy trinity". ACL, MCL and meniscus. Didn't end my sport career because I had none to speak of :drinking:.

My guess is he severed the acl or pcl in addition to breaking a bone near the origin, maybe the tibia or fibula. The first operation would be to repair the bone and then once it's healed, do the reconstruction. So if it is a patellar graft, then it was probably the tibia.

I would rather have a thousand shoulder injuries than one knee injury.

terrible news feel really bad for him. Shouldn't affect the team too much as hopefully they weren't planning on him being the first choice winger, but that really suck for him. hope the surgery and recovery goes well.

I would rather have a thousand shoulder injuries than one knee injury.

I had my shoulder smashed to pieces in a hit from behind during a hockey game and had two reconstructive surgeries on it to get it to 70% mobility. The pain from it and all the recovery during the 2 years of rehab was excruciating. If you could take a thousand of those then you are a better person than me. All joint injuries are bad and I don't think you can ever be the same after them unfortunately. Hope that I am proven wrong of course with Lindsay. Hope he recovers well.

Absolutely.

This would be a great time for the youngsters to come out of there shell during training camp and mabey get a starters spot in there postions so that we don't have to go out and sign a mass of new players.

Yeah, I was exaggerating - never had anything serious in the shoulder so I don't know what it's really like. You're right, any serious joint injury is bad. I hope the kid can fully recover - he does have age on his side.

Disappointing news. Not sure if Lindsay is in post-secondary education at the moment but I sure hope he was or will soon be.

If there is a plus side to stories like this it is to encourage kids to ensure they get an education to go along with their sports development. You just never know when an injury will step up and derail your sports dreams.

Damn, this is going to drastically hinder his development. He had a great future ahead of him too. A year off of football will change the course of that, and teams will look at his medical records, and see the type of injury he had, and will likely take a pass on him.

I really feel for the kid. Hopefully he is able to make a recovery and get back to his form with some training. Would probally even cause him to miss some or all of the 2012 season, to get back into shape and form.

Wow, baffling decision making on his part if true. I know he's young, but it's not like he's 10 years old. You just signed a contract with the senior team, did some encouraging things down the stretch and you get on a snowmobile?

I did stupid things at 18 too, but little things, not things that would potentially put my future on the line. I do feel for him, especially if he can't come back from such a catastrophic knee injury, trying to have a bit of fun with friends shouldn't cost a kid his career, but you can't tempt fate when you have it all in front of you.

Perhaps TFC should treat this as a cautionary tale and put a stronger emphasis on communicating the importance of smart decision making for these young kids, especially since their academy system eventually aims to include younger age groups.

^ I'm sure about that. There's players of Lindsay's quality in the TFC academy and in the CSL. Lindsay was quality in the CSL, but miles from dominant.
