I agree, Cooper has to be as close to a "sure thing" that you'll get for a MLS transfer. We should definitely be chasing this.

Slight issue being he would take up Santos' spot, who i like and comes rather cheaply. But on the other hand, depth never hurts considering Santos seems to play hard enough to pick up the occasional injury.

"Might"?
nobody really knows how MLS rules suppose to work. and MLS FO will 'bend' its own rules if it thinks it's necessary for parity or whatever purpose

example. Brian McBride and Heath Pearce both had to go through MLS allocation process b/c they were former MLS players and USMNT players returning to MLS. Vancouver apparently used their no1 in allocation to sign Jay DeMerit.

so it makes sense that Portland is in lead to sign Kenny Cooper, if Cooper is indeed part of allocation process, as they are now no1 in allocation order. any team can trade with portland for their spot in order to have a shot at signing cooper.

here's an allocation that does decent job of explaining 'allocation'

This is absolutely mental. Ingolstad is 17th in 2.Bundesliga on 12 pts in 17 matches. "Europe at any cost" aka the Freddy Adu Disease. Well what do you know, Adu and Buddle have the same agent - Richard Motzkin (Landon Donovan's agent too).

Edit:

Absolutely. While the departure of Buddle will benefit LA's rivals, it is definitely a negative reflection of the league. If MLS is to gain global crediblity on a competitive scale, the top players cannot be lost to 2nd and 3rd division European clubs because of a discrepancy in salary...

The article states the key issues regarding Buddle's departure. Sound familiar? I recognize that Buddle's situation is not completely analagous with TFC's current scenario involving DeRo because of their contract status but the crux of the issues are similar in nature.

The Fox Sports article nails the issue — Ingolstadt offered Buddle twice his salary after Galaxy would not give Buddle a designated player contract. Now with two designated players already, LA had some choices to make but on any other club Buddle would be considered DP-status. And he should be — as I said, he raises both MLS’s and the national team’s profile, as well as any club on which he would play (as well as being a really good player). But again an American goes overseas because MLS will not fork over the money to keep them in the U.S. In this way, Buddle is very similar to his possible teammate Freddy Adu — Adu’s career is stuck in neutral but he is not going back to MLS, a logical place to jumpstart his career, because he is making more overseas playing for second division clubs.

MLS has made good progress in keeping talented players in the U.S., both experienced and star players (designated player rule) as well as young college stars (Generation adidas). But now MLS needs to consider how it can keep the Buddle-type players (who are successful) and the Adu-players (who could be successful) in the United States. I would recommend a new designated player category for American players, which similar to other designated players would only have part of their salary count against the cap. This would allow teams financial flexibility to bring these players home and not only give them exposure to U.S. audiences, but allow them to compete against good competition. Ultimately, the answer may be a system like in Europe of free agency and academies, but until MLS is as lucrative as those leagues an American DP slot is the best way to keep American stars in the most beneficial place — here.

I wholeheartedly agree with the concept of implementing additional DP slots for domestic players. As it is unlikely that the salary cap will increase significantly in the immediate future, domestic DP slots will prevent MLS from enduring this type of embarassing publicity in the interim...

Possibly something similar to the NBA's Larry Bird exception - where a team who has held on to a player for x number of years can then increases the player's salary by % amount without it going against the cap - providing they aren't traded/waived. DeRo/Buddle/whomever play out 3 years on their initial contract and then be in line for a significant pay bump - the players get paid, teams get to keep their talent without another team poaching their "Domestic DP", and the additional cap hit is nullified/minimal.

ill be amazed if Buddle continues his form at Ingolstadt, the situation has not worsened for the MLS btw, if anything its gotten better, fact of the matter is dudes will always leave to play in europe for the prestige and if they offer more money than its all the sweeter. we're prob losing less players now but we are still losing players, we are not a number one league at this point and still have a long way to go.

I dont feel it is a disgrace for MLS, but a little bit of economic reality. In other cities they do not have to pay Toronto pricing for the seeing for what many consider Division 2/3 caliber of football. Just because in Toronto and LA we pay like Manchester United fans pay, doesn't mean the quality of the game is the same.

The truth is MLS is Division 2/3 and Buddle just went for the pay raise. The league isn't any lesser for it.

TORONTO FC. Coach Aron Winter has just come aboard, the fate of Dwayne De Rosario has yet to be resolved, and there’s no pick until the middle of the second round because TFC sent its first-round pick, No. 8 overall, to Vancouver in exchange for midfielder Nathan Sturgis. This team has more needs than it has picks. The MLS acumen of Paul Mariner can prove to be invaluable, but in this draft there’s not much for him to work with unless a higher pick is secured.

TFC is painfully short on tradable commodities, other than allocation money, should it choose to deal. Alabama-Birmingham defender Curtis Ushedo, a native of Ontario, is an obvious candidate, but a studly striker like C.J. Sapong makes sense, too. Scottish forward Ashley McInnes is one of those sleepers who might find the right fit north of the border.
SuperDraft picks: Nos. 26, 43, 44.

LA and Dallas succeeded last year in large part because of their young Brazilians.

This is interesting, as there is a large Portuguese (and Portuguese speaking) community very close to Red Bull Stadium (the Ironbound in Newark). With the right person from that community on your staff, you could really build something (ie billets, language coaches) for kids to come in.

We have to figure this out. It would take time, but TFC has our own Little Portugal on its doorstep, and could compete for young Brazilian players. They could come here to perfect their game under an Ajax-trained guy, one of the alltime most-capped players in Dutch history, who is originally from South America, and still be in a Portuguese-speaking environment off the field.

This would be a brilliant signing for Vanna White. A very experienced pro who can give them 2 good years on the field and then move into a coaching/manager's position.
He knows the game inside out, speaks well and will be able to pass on a lot to the youngsters.
Just what TFC need.

Lenhart was second on the Crew last season with six goals. He also had a pair of assists in 27 appearances, including 17 starts. He was selected by the Crew with the 48th pick in the 2008 SuperDraft.

In three seasons in Columbus, he made 69 appearances - including six playoff games - and had 14 goals and four assists.

The Buddle move has bad news written all over it.

The clincher was that FC Ingolstadt is offering him double the wage he is making at the Galaxy.

Oh MLS.....what happens if this trend continues?

You mean the trend of European clubs overpaying for marginal players? What will happen is UEFA clubs will be $15 billion in debt instead of $7b.

Still a gamble. Nothing is certain.
Both clubs are 2nd div clubs. All I am saying people can't say Edson's move is silly but praise or accept Findlays.
They are in the same boat is all I am saying.

But I feel both would be served better by playing in 1st division leagues (with the top teams) in other countries. They would get more exposure and playing time with Champ League and Euro League games.

While I agree with the overall point of your post, Germany has strict financial controls on it's clubs (that actually make sense). The rest of UEFA would be smart to follow their lead.

In terms of Findlay, I'd say yes with a but - the Championship is as big a lot of first divisions. For example is Findlay better playing top flight in somewhere in Scandinavia instead of the Championship? I can't think of many teams in Sweden, Norway, or Denmark who I'd describe as bigger than Forest or too big for the Championship.

yep, id definitely agree here. the bundesliga is already underrated as a league, the Bundesliga 2 isnt that far from it, especially when you have underperforming top B2 teams stacked with players but headed to relegation *ahem* Stuttgart *cough* Wolfsburg. Yes the bottom part of the Bundesliga 2 is not that good, but few leagues are good on the bottom, id still say the mid to top could easily compete in the championship and have no problem playing the best teams in the MLS

Earthquakes sign Donatelli from Impact

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced Friday night they have signed midfielder Tony Donatelli.

Donatelli has played in the USL First Division with both the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps. He was part of two championship teams, in 2006 with Vancouver and 2009 with Montreal.

Donatelli most recently played with Montreal from the middle of 2008 through 2010. He also helped the team to the semifinals in 2008 and 2010.

"Tony has had a great career in USL First Division and was a part of two championship teams," said San Jose General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. "He also did well in CONCACAF Champions League games against very good competition.

"We think he will be a solid addition to our team."

Donatelli appeared in 30 games (27 starts) in 2010, scoring seven goals with three assists. In his five years in the USL First Division and USSF Division 2, Donatelli made 134 appearances, 84 of which were starts. He scored 19 goals and had 12 assists.

Donatelli played in the Major Indoor Soccer League during the USL offseason from 2006-2008 with the Philadelphia KiXX. He scored 35 goals in 59 games and helped the KiXX to a title in 2006.

Interesting. I didn't follow Philly much last year. But when I've seen him play, I've been impressed with him. Easily better than a lot of defenders that have come through TFC's system. I wonder what happened in Philly?

All TFC has to do is convince Juve to give up Del Piero on a loan deal. Even if just for 1/2 the season, then you will see how many of the new kits MLSE will sell.

http://www.dcunited.com/press-release/2011/02/dc-united-waives-defender-julius-james

Washington, D.C. - D.C. United announced today that it has waived defender Julius James (http://www.dcunited.com/player/julius-james). In one and a half seasons in Washington, James played in 31 MLS contests (24 starts), recording two goals in 2,388 minutes on the pitch. In a separate transaction, United has acquired allocation money from the LA Galaxy in exchange for an international roster spot.
“We would like to thank Julius for his contributions to D.C. United and we wish him well in the future,” said General Manager Dave Kasper.
Kasper continues, “We are also pleased to have acquired allocation money that provides us with an additional asset for future player moves.”
James joined the Black-and-Red in a trade with Houston on August 14, 2009. The central defender made nine appearances (eight starts) for United during his first season, scoring in the club’s season finale on October 24 in Kansas City. In 2010 James logged 1,682 minutes for the Black-and-Red, appearing in 22 League contests (16 starts). The Trinidad and Tobago National Team member scored his lone goal of the campaign in a 1-0 win over Toronto FC on September 11.
James was selected ninth overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC from the University of Connecticut. During his rookie campaign the defender played 13 matches (10 starts) for Toronto, scoring in his MLS debut on May 31 against the LA Galaxy.

UNION TO ANNOUNCE CARLOS RUIZ SIGNING.

The Philadelphia Union are expected to announce the signing of Guatemalan forward and former MLS Golden Boot winner Carlos Ruiz early this week. Ruiz, who has 90 career goals in 164 games over seven seasons in Major League Soccer, returns to the league after stints with Olimpia Asunción in Paraguay, Puebla FC in Mexico, and most recently, Aris Thessaloniki in Greece.
Ruiz has been in training camp in Orlando as a trialist with the Union since February 1st, but the club has been very tight lipped about any information on unsigned players in camp. Ruiz, who won the MLS Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player Awards in 2002 with the Los Angeles Galaxy, also spent time with FC Dallas and Toronto FC over his career. He joins Faryd Mondragón, Carlos Valdés, and Brian Carroll as key additions for the Union this off-season. Ruiz is also a member of the Guatemalan National team, and he is their all-time leading scorer with 43 goals since his debut in 1998.

that roof looks cool, but that really limits them for possible expansion in the future. Other then just the one end behind the net that used to be "hospitality suites".

Vancouver and Portland promos. Not really news, but I think some might find the Vancouver promo interesting.

Sounds like the Sounders are looking to trade DP Blaise Nkufo:

Update 2 - Nkufo & Sounders Parting Ways, Seeking Trade Partner (http://www.mynorthwest.com/?sid=444599&nid=418)

Let that sink in a bit. Over-the-hill DP #2 wants away from the team.

UPDATE: Apparently, the Sounders are confirming (http://twitter.com/#%21/joshuamayers/status/47781101430771713) that Blaise Nkufo will not be in the starting lineup, but are denying that it was tied to an incident in training. We'll give you updates whenever we get them.

and

UPDATE 5:09 p.m. -- KIRO 97.3 FM radio (which broadcasts all of the team's matches) is reporting that Nkufo and the team have mutually parted ways (http://www.mynorthwest.com/?sid=444599&nid=418).

UPDATE 2:54 p.m. -- I just talked to a Sounders FC official who confirmed that Nkufo will not be starting, but denied there was an incident at training.

Sounders FC forward Blaise Nkufo is not expected to start in the MLS season opener tonight against the L.A. Galaxy after an incident in training recently, The Seattle Times has learned.

Details of the run-in aren't exactly clear, but it is not injury related. The punishment is disciplinary and O'Brian White is expected to start in place of the designated player.
A message to Sounders FC regarding the issue wasn't immediately returned. (UPDATE: see above)

More to come on this one.http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/soundersfcblog/2014504122_blaise_nkufo_not_expected_to_s.html

There's already speculation that such an arrangement might take place:

The 35-year-old Nkufo has family in Vancouver, British Columbia, so it would make sense if he would like to join the expansion Whitecaps. Toronto FC is another possibility.
