i know ill prob come off like a dick, and not to denigrate your knowledge or enjoyment Sullivan (as you are incredibly knowledgeable and well versed and these guys can be interesting) but i find myself increasingly less interested in the drafts and their outcome in recent years. Kinda feel like its a rarity to get a player that becomes a mls first team player immediately (talk about awkward wording on my part)

So if you have a good scout, you might be able to pick out a good player with late rounders. However, MLS superdraft is more of a lottery than science it seems. Hard to gauge whether a draft pick will pan out, or be a bust, even early first rounders.

I do want to say that the gap between MLS and NCAA is getting larger and I think NCAA isn't doing enough to up the quality of players they are producing to keep pace with the improvement in MLS

These drafts will become useless for teams who are able to produce their own talent through their academy.

NCAA men's soccer stat pack:
http://www.ncaa.com/sports/m-soccer/stats/ncaa-m-soccer-stats-index.html

Ossington,
I get what you're saying. And I get why.
There's about 20 players on that list who have ZERO shot at playing pro. But they're on that list only because of the people that MLS rely on to create that list, amateur college coaches, not pro scouts or pro coaches. Most of that list is a result of a committee of NCAA coaches who consult with a few MLS HQ folks, a couple of pro scouts and the odd MLS coach.

The list is somewhat political!

Now factor in Johnston's inability to use the draft effectively, he did waste a lot of picks, and it's easy to see why it's "draft smaft".

The draft could/should be used to supplement a roster.

Yohan,
This draft is all Tim Regan's. We get to see what he's all about. He's developed the lists, Dichio and Daso have been cross checking it. And those two also spent a lot of time tracking the Big Ten (mostly Indiana, Michigan & Penn State).

So I think this draft might bring some depth, but not immediate 1st XI help.

And with regard to your NCAA comments, that gap, yeah it exists. Every year more players either bypass the NCAA and head off oversees or players leave early (a TFC pick was deemed to be "academically ineligible", hence why he accepted the Gen A offer).

The other thing about the NCAA is the coaches. A majority are more concerned about job security than developing players for MLS. So they recruit talent and let the talent dictate the "system" whereas a few coaches (Porter, Clarke, Salcedo, Vidovich, Kerr) actually try to develop players.

From that list of 54, I hear there's maybe 4 players ready to play MLS in 2011; another 3 or 4 ready for late season minutes. There's about 4-6 underclassman that could play MLS in 2011, but how many of them get/take the Gen A deal is uncertain.

TFC07,
MLS made a good decision by increasing the roster size.
But the clubs need more, certainly more than what they've established for the cap and more than 30 would be better. But ultimately, clubs need to be able to offer more than $40K to a development player.

DC United have a couple of kids coming through, not yet Andy Najar like,
but within 2 years they'll have 3 or 4 home-growns that are in the Najar mold.

So they get the development thing... and I think TFC does to. Talk to Dichio, he's got some great comments....

I can see TFC inviting a few non-combine NCAA players to camp ...

I may not be any sort of Pep Guardiola, but I found a lot of US College coaches are poor, really poor, like they could learn a thing or two from a few hours of Football Manager.

I have also heard about how biased the list is positionally, and mostly midfield type players. Not only because they have the best shot at making MLS, but also the best shot at being sold to Europe, thus making the league money.

Any Canadians in this year's draft?

Curtis Ushedo is from Mississauaga, born in 89. Played youth soccer with the Dixie Soccer Club. That Dixie 89 team was talented. I remember trying to recruit one of his teammates.

The C-USA isn’t really a top notch soccer conference, and UAB doesn’t have a loaded schedule.

He reminds me of Marco Velez, size with no 1st touch, but he has some speed. He's improved during his 4 years at UAB, smart kid, but he's just not yet ready for MSL football. A couple of years in the USL could serve him well.

As an aside, he was recruited to UAB along with ex TFC player Gabe Gala, but GG didn't "enter" the program as a freshman.
UAB is also where DC United's Dejan Jakovic went to school.

If he ends up at TFC's camp, it's as a free agent.

Oh man you're knocking on the door....
If I ever decide to open it "online" just delete my account, I'll ramble for days, weeks, months.....

I listen to some of these coaches and I can't believe they are getting paid!!!!
At some of the USSF or NSCAA development sessions, I sometimes get grouped with them during the technical/practical component, and they have NO skill/idea/clue. The drill or exercise breaks down at them consistently.

But yeah, you are so bang on....

From what I have been told this years crop of college kids is by far the poorest lot since TFC has come in to the league. So really trade all of our draft picks for allocation money

Philly didn't get homegrown tag on Herzog.

I'm told that NCAA champs Akron are on the verge of seeing 6 starters leave the program - 4 to MLS and 2 to Europe.

Adidas contact says 5 contracts are signed, 2 are pending and 2 are still very active in negotiations and 1 offer is on the verge of being abandoned as the player's request is excessive and unreasonable.

My quick comment, none of these boys fall to the 2nd round.

TFC related...
What I also hear is that Dichio and Daso continue to have an interest in
Justin Meram from Michigan & Steven Perry from Notre Dame.
Both seniors, both forwards, and all scouting related questions to the coaching staffs of both programs seemed to be about their ability to play wide.

Both should be available for the 2nd round pick.

Final note, draft in 2012 goes to 6 rounds.
