It is bullshit, but if they seeded the regional winners then the other top-ranked teams would just get drawn into those groups - which, with our luck, might have been worse for us.

What's the point of crowning a champion of a region if there is no benefit (other than making it to the world cup).

The U.S. faltered by losing to Mexico, they're back into it after an expected win over Italy sure. But reward the winner of the tournament.

I can see the point of rewarding consistent play over the years, though.
