The 2010 MLS Best XI
Donovan Ricketts, LA Galaxy: The Jamaican goalkeeper started 29 matches in 2010, posting a 18-7-4 record with 11 shutouts and a .90 goals-against average, good for third best in the league.
Jámison Olave, Real Salt Lake: The big Colombian center back led the RSL defense to a new record for fewest goals scored in a season (20), and he added three goals at the other end.
Nat Borchers, Real Salt Lake: The American missed only 27 minutes all season long. He also scored two goals, including a stoppage-time header to save a point against rivals Colorado.
Omar Gonzalez, LA Galaxy: Last year’s Rookie of the Year was even better in 2010, leading the league’s second-stingiest defense (26 goals against). He also notched two goals.
Landon Donovan, LA Galaxy: The US international led the league in assists (16) for the first time in his career. He also hit seven goals of his own. This is his fourth Best XI nod.
David Ferreira, FC Dallas: The Colombian playmaker scored eight goals and dished out 13 assists, second-most in the league. Despite being the most fouled player in MLS, he played all but one minute of the regular season.
Javier Morales, Real Salt Lake: The Argentine No. 10 had another balanced season, hitting seven goals and posting nine assists, leading the league’s most prolific attack.
Sebastien Le Toux, Philadelphia Union: A breakout season by the French attacker made the expansion side competitive from the start. Winner of the Fair Play Award, he finished with 14 goals and 11 assists, accounting for 71 percent of Philadelphia’s scoring.

Dwayne De Rosario, Toronto FC: Always dangerous, the Canadian international hit 15 goals for the Reds, including five match-winners. This is his fifth Best XI nod, tying him with Chris Armas and Jaime Moreno for most all-time.

Chris Wondolowski, San Jose Earthquakes: The previously unheralded striker exploded for six goals in the final four games to take the Golden Boot with 18 total goals. Nine of them were game-winning goals, helping the Quakes reach the playoffs for the first time since reforming in 2008.
Edson Buddle, LA Galaxy: The US international scored nine goals in the first six games, earning himself a spot on the World Cup team. He finished with 17 goals, good for second in the Golden Boot race.

Ok, like the list but there are a few downfalls.

1) 3-5-2? There isn't a mls team that plays it.
2) no recognition for defensive mids and wingbacks
3) Donovan had to rigged in by garber (see soccer insider for details, great player, but come on, really?)

I found that Wondo stat interesting the other day" 11 of his 18 goals came after Geovanni arrived. One guy opening up space for the other.

Only one of the "Best XI" is a 'Designated Player', and he is an American (Landon Donovan)...

Makes you wonder if the big name signings have been worth it to teams - especially if they don't see a huge attendance & jersey sale jump...

^ I kind of get what you mean but also, the biggest impact players that are DP are also some that didn't show up till midseason. Marquez and Beckham had huge impacts on their clubs but weren't here a full season.

Why is DeRo on there? Doesn't he suck? You'd think that the league should see what the super smart fans around here see too... ;)

Very good point... But for all those DP's (that's what she said!) and only one to have made the list - is definitely noteworthy...

But also, for every Marquez to show and make an impact - there's a Mista to show and make NOTHING...

Why does our our starting central midfielder have 15 goals and 4 assists, instead of the other way around?

He's a striker. We should use him exclusively as such; scoring goals is his thing. That and dribbling into heavy traffic and being stripped.

We need him. Clutch player. But not a starting midfielder. Starting striker? Sure.

Controversy; league making up rules as it goes along in favour of the Galaxy...

Landon Donovan benefited from some hasty rule-bending by Major League Soccer chiefs in order to be selected to the league’s annual Best XI.
Donovan was listed on the ballot for the award, which selects a goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards – as a forward.
Yet after the votes cast by players, coaches, general managers and the media were tallied, Donovan was left out in the cold, with his Los Angeles Galaxy (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/los/) teammate Edson Buddle and league top scorer Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/san/) being named in the forward roles.
However, commissioner Don Garber and his colleagues acted swiftly and made the somewhat controversial decision to include Donovan in the team anyway, putting him in as one of the midfielders.
“It is certainly right to have Landon on there,” said Garber during his annual state of the league address on Tuesday. “We needed to do the right thing.”
The decision will spark some controversy and divide opinion and it is highly questionable whether the league would have taken similar action on behalf of a lesser-known player.
If the votes had been allowed to stand as they were and Donovan had been omitted from the XI, it would have not meant that his season was an abject failure. It would have meant there were two forwards who performed stronger over the course of the campaign.
Those are MLS’s own rules, its own criteria, and it should have the conviction to stand by them. Shameless pandering to star players in this manner is not necessary and it does little for the league’s image.
It is also pretty tough on whoever was the fifth-highest vote-getter among the midfielders. Although that player was not named, missing out on selection could have cost them a bonus from their team. David Ferreira (FC Dallas (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/dal/)), Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto FC (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/tor/)), Javier Morales (Real Salt Lake (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/rea/)) and Sebastien Le Toux (Philadelphia Union (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/phi/)) were the other four midfielders chosen.

Sadly, I'm not shocked or even remotely surprised. This league makes up and changes rules all the time (if it benefits LA or NY).

Hard to argue with this list. I particularly like Morales, he was/is the most creative player in the league in my opinion. Curious how so many of us thought JDG would "eat up" mls when he was signed. He played all season like a guy who was DP'd every day before the game.
Good for Dero. Too bad for Mista. I wonder if the later left for Spain when he found out he was going to be voted on the 'Worst designated Player' in the history of MLS', or Worst signing in the history of MLS. Others on that list would include Robert, Samuel, Tebilly, Ruiz....when is this ever going to end? It would be nice to see a few more TFC players make the top player list next season.
