I still feel Columbus will get through. Good first half for Colorado, but they did a bit too much sitting back trying to protect the lead late on, hopefully they won't be too defensive in Columbus.

Auzzy
10-28-2010, 11:27 PM
I watched most of this game. Some pretty good soccer at times. Columbus looked very tired in certain positions, and allowed a ton of dangerous turnovers. Agreed, towards the end Colorado had lots of trouble controlling the ball & maintaining possession, so there was some pretty frantic defending. They really should have shot a few more goals earlier in the game, when they had a bunch of chances. Going to Columbus with a 1-0 advantage isn't much.

I was reminded how little I like most of the Columbus players. What is it with that team & douchey haircuts?

Chevy

LOL @ Douchey haircuts.

Agreed. They certainly do not have the style of Maldini's AC Milan squads, that's for friggin sure.

Dont get me wrong, there have been some very big games in our leagues history. But the league has grown, the quality gets better every day. The Galaxy and Sounders could probably beat any championship team in england if they were playing at home. I just think its a great example of how far our league has come.

Do you mean Zakuani's goal that was called back? I just watched the replay a few times. Definitely was offside, since he was off on the original shot and ended up influencing play. Tough call to make (especially in front of 40k), but good officiating in that case.

Too a degree yes.

I think to succeed in this league you need to at least have a certain amount of speed. On top of that you need to be able to be physical at a certain level or be able to handle it.

But what separates the best teams in this league from the rest is they find guys who are fast, can handle the physical play, but are good technical players.

Speed is important, but alone it can't make you effective. Case + point: Johann Smith.

Convey is man of the match. Two nice goals and a great cross to Wondo.

What a great performance from Convey. His re-emergence this year should get him a recall back to the US National team.

Convey was amongst first young players developed through an MLS team - skipping college - turning pro with DCU - moving to England - then back to MLS. I still remember him as one of the better players for the USA vs. Italy in the 1-1 draw in Germany 2006. Still under thirty if I recall.

I don't really agree with that. The main beneficiaries of a NYRB vs LAG final would be scalpers at BMO and SSH who want to get back some of their outlay. After that it's probably MLSE from increased concessions through increased attendance.

Do you really think that a world that sneers at US football 364 days a year is suddenly going to tune in to the MLS Cup Final just because two has beens are playing in it? It wouldn't happen - they wouldn't even know the game was on and they certainly would not be tracking the play offs to see which teams made the final in the first place.

The tv ratings in England would still be nil, if it's even being screened there. And do you think tv companies around the world would suddenly make last minute changes to their schedule to pick u the game and pay for the rights? Because if they do it in advance then they risk paying for and screening Real Salt Lake vs Columbus (or whatever).

The most increase in coverage you'd find from a NYRB vs LAG final is that the BBC would put the result on their website and a bunch of people would read about the result and know that the game had taken place, but not really care either way as to who won. That's it.

ilikemusic
11-04-2010, 10:53 PM
He may have overstated his case by claiming a 'world audience', but you cant deny there is a gigantic disparity in the attention that would be paid to a New York-LA final, and the attention that will be paid to, say, a Colorado-Columbus final.

I didn't realize, in all the "surprised" blog reports Ive read elsewhere about an 8th place seed beating the Big Bad Mighty New Jersey team, that there was only a 5-point difference in points between the two teams during the regular season.

5 points over 30 games is not a statistically significance difference between SJ and NY. 5 points could be chalked up to randomness, actually. So it's not as surprising that SJ won as many bloggers seem to think this morning.

I have to agree. I remember saying after the red bulls loss in august that I wasn't that impressed with them. I thought they looked weak at the back, it showed last night.

I am going to final regardless of who is playing in it, but LA-NY was the dream matchup on many levels. The buzz around town with that match-up would have driven media interest beyond the usual footy types, which in turn would bring awareness of the game to people beyond just those that normally go to games.

Awareness and exposure is good for the game and the league.

Last March when the game was awarded, the "dream match-up" would have been Toronto-LA. Imagine how that game would have looked on TV. They would have sold it as 'international' and used the home crowd as the biggest selling point, the way MLSE use the supporters in all their ads.

Even Toronto-Seattle could have been marketed very successfully.

New York only emerged mid-season as the 'dream' team for the final. If the league had wanted a NY-LA final, they would have awarded the game to NY in the first place.

I think the Crew would have had more travelling support than either of the western teams that are now contending the "eastern" final. Either San Jose or Colorado will be playing in the MLS Cup for sure. Neither have more media importance than Columbus. (By which I mean: none of those three teams have any pull or importance, so the travelling support would tip the balance.)

If it is a blizzard then I can guarentee that once every twenty or thirty years will be a gift. There is a reason Lambo, New England and Buffalo have never hosted a superbowl and New Orleans and Miami have hosted seven and five respectively.

MLS had to give the final to us because of our support. If there is a blizzard and no one shows we will never get it again.

the chance of a blizzard in November is almost zero.

Last 10 years, we've barely had any snow at Christmas.

The crappy thing is it's a night game. If they wanted to ensure a decent temperature (10-12 degrees) they needed to put this on during the afternoon. Who knows, we could have a nice 11 degree afternoon on the 21st.. but by 8:30-10:30 it's gonna be 5 probably.

If someone says "almost zero" it does not mean "Zero chance."

As someone who was born in Toronto, having lived here for 35 years, I will repeat: there's almost a zero chance of a blizzard in November. A youtube video of one blizzard in November does not refute that assertion. If that was the one blizzard in 35 years, that's almost zero. if I had suggested there's a zero chance of a blizzard, you'd be correct.

Im not comparing play at positions, the Evertonian said Landon was the best US Player of all time, probably because he played for Everton recently.

I would absolutely put Friedel above Donovan in this regard. Friedel is a better goalie at the top level than Donovan is a striker at the same level.

It has happened two of the last three years. I spent a couple of more minutes on the internet and found this:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2007/11/22/ont-storm.html

More to the point, there is actually data.

On average, 0.6 days in November get a snowfall of 5cm or more, and .17 days gets 10 cms or more.

Put another way, there's a 60% chance we get 5cm on a day in November, and a 1 in 6 chance each year that we get a snow storm in November.

http://climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_e.html?Province=ALL&StationName=&SearchType=BeginsWith&LocateBy=Province&Proximity=25&ProximityFrom=City&StationNumber=&IDType=MSC&CityName=&ParkName=&LatitudeDegrees=&LatitudeMinutes=&LongitudeDegrees=&LongitudeMinutes=&NormalsClass=A&SelNormals=&StnId=5051&autofwd=1

They could eliminate all of this bullshit and possibly make some extra dough if they made the final a home and away game, with the second game going to the team that placed highest.

Other than a persistent neutral stadium in the centre of the continent, I cant see a better way to make sure that the fans of any team are able to attend the final.

This current system of relying on the fans of teams who didnt make it to generate an atmosphere and attendance, is ludicrous.

I think it is important for the MLS that LA is in the final, it is the only way the MLS Cup will resonate in the city beyond the regular footy media and supporters.

It will be in the nightly news/sports cycle on channels like cfto, city, global, etc. The sports channels beyond the broadcast partners will give it coverage. It will break the front pages of the newspaper when Becks and Posh arrive kids in tow. It will make it an event.

Dallas should be on track for the final. They have been completely screwed here by the MLS playoff system.

They finished above both Colorado and San Jose, but instead of getting a home game against Colorado, which is what a natural seeding system would have given them, they have to play LA. On the road. I feel sorry for their fans.

They play a beautiful style and will give LA a better game than either SJ or the Rapids.

All I know is, I will be at BMO field with my galaxy shirt on. Call me a traitor but there was a time before TFC existed where LA Galaxy was my MLS side. :D

Good result last night. If Becks is in the MLS Cup final it will entice more supporters to show up...

I'd like to see San Jose in the final against LA. At least it will have a little canadian content with Yallop.

I'm sorry but fuck the Galaxatives. I'd rather Dallas and Colorado/San Jose play than watch Donovan and Beckham have their collective cocks gobbled by the media.

Guess MLS needs their golden boys. The Sounders fans made more noise than those asshole LA fans in their own god damn stadium.

I think that's unfair to call it a troll post. For the like 1% of us who were MLS fans before TFC, many of us had clubs that we followed (mine was DC United).

As long as our local team TFC is #1, I don't see anything wrong with Jimmy's post (although Jimmy would have been awfully young 5 years ago).

After all, there are many followers of smaller clubs in England who also follow a "big 4" club in competitions that their first club isn't involved in.

really? i thought the LA fans made a lot of noise last night.. particularly the fans behind the goal.

I just can't imagine watching Cuntingham at BMO again, and possibly seeing him win a championship on our soil.... not after he choked in the canadian championship, forcing me to watch Montreal jump around with the Voyageurs Cup.

Once LA knocks Dallas out, there won't be any players I hate with a passion left in the playoffs.
I used to make fun of Donovan but have more respect for him after seeing his play with Everton and at the World Cup. But I never hated him like I hate Cuntingham.

I don't get the hate for Cunny.

OK he missed a sitter against Montreal. But really? Let's face it, we were wrong about him. Carver wasn't using him properly.

It's Exhibit A on why, sometimes, mgmt needs to ignore the fans.

Ensco, he was a selfish diva who decided to have a hissy fit and blatantly stopped trying. Whatever his problem with Carver was, he punished the fans. He stopped scoring because he didnt want to score his hundredth goal with us and deliberately screwed us out of the CL too.

I think its fair enough, before you were a mod that kind of post would have gotten him laughed off the board. I suppose when you get about three posts an hour these days, you have to be protective though.

This board is getting like the 'voyageurs' where its all about 'football fans' and plain ol' TFC fans are looked down on. Its quite odd really, considering the red passion that used to be all over these boards.

What's the suspension rules for the playoffs? Is it 2 yellows and miss the next game? I think it would be quite amusing if LA made the final but Beckham was suspended. I guess he could do another bench perfomance 2007 style.

well, whoever makes it from here, I just hope an eastern team wins.

the chance of a blizzard in November is almost zero.

But the needs of TV win again.....

I dont understand why theyre playing at night.

Hasnt the MLS Cup been played in the afternoon most years?

Yeah, I was 12, loved LA Galaxy because half my family is in LA and the first game I ever went to was Galaxy vs. Chivas.

Then Toronto came into existence and it was like a dream come true! :D I know many people here like the team and not the league, but for me personally I am a fan of the league too :)

As of right now, fuck Los Angeles Galaxy if it comes above TFC. I don't claim to be a galaxy supporter. TFC is the only team I have any kind of passion for, except Valencia and my national side, Armenia.

consider my post a playful nudge, buddy. You follow football how you like, and its not up to me to tell you that you're doing it wrong, because essentially there is no wrong or right.

It's pretty typical of Oldtimer not to 'get' my humour once again, and the lack of ribbing you got for your post is reflective of how much this board has lost its edge as the place for rabid TFC support, despite lopping off all the non TFC related boards.

i told my buddy im a spurs fan (he's a gunner, of course) and the first words out of his mouth were "why would you do that to yourself?". although, i do enjoy watching newcastle as they're fucking entertaining.

speaking of entertaining, and back on topic, is it just me or have these playoffs been rather good?
