TFC @ DC -- the last game of a depressing season (pre-game/match thread)

So, it's the final game of the season for both squads this Saturday. 7:30pm ET kickoff live in DC, aired on GolTV.

DC has wrapped up last place in the MLS quite comfortably, and TFC is well on their way to finishing in the bottom three (dependent on other results, of course).

Last time we played DC, it was at home, and it was an embarrassing 1-0 loss, where we made them look like the MLS champions they once were. It was really the nail that was driven into the coffin of our playoff hopes.

Will this be revenge? How many Academy players will play? Will Kocic start as Conway's suspended for his red card?

Aside, the teams that can yet pass us are New England (v NYRB), Philly (v Columbus), and Houston (v Seattle).

Correct. Only the first team roster qualifies for MLS matches.

In the CCL, all affiliated teams (youth, academy) are allowed, provided the players names were submitted to CONCACAF at the start of the competition. Each club can list 30 players. Since there are less than 30 players on the first team, academy players can be added to make the total up to 30.

Well, Preki is laughing in his hole since he was kicked out, because TFC was even more pathetic without him.

Playing for positions for the next year seems to motivate just a few guys from this group.

Boy, that's true. I've never seen a team where the players are as static off the ball as we are -- even in those games where we supposedly 'played decently,' it's always just guys standing around waiting for a pass.

You know, we really have to keep something in mind, though:

In the past in MLS, a lot of these 'quick turnarounds' teams have had (excepting NY this year) have come in a league with only 10 or 12 or 14 teams, where 8 make the playoffs -- it was much easier in the past to show slight improvement and have it actually lead to concrete results.

But next year we're up to 18 -- we're a real league now. Now, if we want to be good, we really have to become one of the elite or near-elite teams in the league, and that's not easy to do in any league in any sport anywhere.

It's quite, quite possible that in the future we're going to have to be happier with winning things like the NCC than were currently are, because winning the league (or even making the playoffs) is now a much, much harder proposition than it used to be.

Let's talk about "being lazy".

To me, being lazy is what i just saw 10 guys in red shirts do while we had the fucking ball. Make a run, give your teammates an angle to receive the ball, force the defenders into wide positions by using the space on the field!

Guevara's a guy who's qualities are mainly attacking. People bitch and moan when he didn't track back as much to defend, but they are missing the point. You want your best attacking players to expend their energy going forward not running around like a headless chicken standing behind the ball.

He's used to a system where he doesn't have to track back as much which is perfectly understandable. Too much defending takes him out of the attacking areas of the field, makes us less dangerous going forward.

Plenty of clubs use their #10 this way, I don't see why we have to play both mids in the center of the field as box-to-box.

I agree, De Rosario seems to hate to be pegged to any position, which is probably the thing that bothers me the most. In actuality, he's probably closest to a support striker but thinks of himself as a playmaker. Unfortunately he holds the ball too long to be one.
