The English dude still garners headlines:

He still can bend it like Beckham

PHILADELPHIA -- The shot bended around the wall, a laser from 25 yards out, into the upper corner of the goal, the keeper helplessly diving to his left, empty once again.
David Beckham has scored many big goals, including tallies in three different World Cups for England, but Sunday's highlight-film free kick was his first goal in just his fourth game back since suffering what at first was considered a potential career-ending left Achilles injury.

The Galaxy (16-6-5) have the most points (53) in MLS but that isn't why they are the league's hottest ticket, averaging a league-best 18,504 on the road.
"David Beckham's signing was one of the key moments in the history of MLS," commissioner Don Garber said via e-mail. "He continues to elevate soccer in North America to higher levels of excitement and popularity here and abroad."
This is a team of stars, whose best player is U.S. standout Landon Donovan, but whose biggest attraction is Beckham.

Duane Rollins has a good analysis of how New York turned things around:

So, TFC fans might be wondering, how did they do it? How is it possible to go from one of the worst teams in MLS history to being MLS Cup contenders?

It helps when you can sign Rafa Marquez and Thierry Henry, but New York’s turn around goes deeper than that. In total they have cut ties with 13 players and added 19 since the start of 2009. Let’s have a look at what happened.http://www.24thminute.com/2010/10/new-york-lessons.html

Importantly, it shows how you can make huge changes in a poor squad and come out with a winner.

More depressing news from a better-managed second year expansion team:

Fireworks popped from the top of the scoreboard. Confetti fluttered all over the field. And 40-year-old Kasey Keller acted like a dared teenager, flipping over the crossbar and onto the back of the net.
A year after celebrating their first U.S. Open Cup title nearly 3,000 miles away from home, the Seattle Sounders FC thoroughly enjoyed a second straight title before their home fans.Read more: http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2010/oct/05/us-open-cup-stays-in-seattle/ (http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2010/oct/05/us-open-cup-stays-in-seattle/#ixzz11aDTRcEk)

The good news is that they beat the KKKrew to do it.

Toronto still has a chance!:

Did not play, playoff odds up 0.0 to 0.005925%http://www.sportsclubstats.com/USA/MLS/East/TorontoFC.html

San Jose needs to lose all 4 remaining matches and TFC win all 3 remaining matches. No ties for either.

OK, so it's not gonna happen... gotta love looking at long odds, though. Kind of like winning the lottery.

It's actually better to tank the last 3 games. We have a chance of moving up several places in our draft picks.

Highlighting everything wrong with the North American sports system. Reward failure...

Yes but it is, what it is.

Very true...

As the league moves forward, they might need to institute the lottery system used by the NBA & NHL to hopefully prevent teams from tanking the final games of the season - and at least appear to keep the integrity of the final matches...

I hate the lottery, hate drafts too, but they are an unfortunate part of North American sport...

We are doing a good enough job of tanking as it is.

...with proper management and an owner willing to spend money. I agree that RBNY turned things around before Rafa and Henry got here, but lets not forget that they had JPA and the budget players that they brought in were done in preperation for signing Henry and Rafa...when those budget players worked out - mainly because they wanted a chance to play with Henry - they kept them, when they didn't work out it wasn't a big deal.

The obvious lesson being that we need to start training camp with a good selection of players who are actually going to end out playing for TFC.
