"We have to use more of our brains. Soccer is more about the brain [than] the body," Morace said.

Quite different from Preki's philosophy, eh? Quite different results, as well.

MLSE: Too Big To Win?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/mlse-too-big-to-win/article1736787/

Interesting that AEG are fans of MLSE. They are a very similar company in many ways (multiple franchises in multiple sports, control multiple venues and are concert promotors), yet they manage to have teams that do considerably better than MLSE's teams.

The Lakers won the 2009 NBA Championship, and the Kings played in the Stanley Cup Final in 1993. The LA Galaxy made it to the MLS final last year, losing only on penalties.

So it is possible to make money and have winning teams. Obviously, something in MLSE management is not quite right.

^the Kings made it in 93? I would have left that out of the argument. 93 is nearing 20 years ago.

There had to be a few things taken out of context and misquotes in there:

“Imagine a channel that had Leafs, Raptors, TFC and Marlies games on it,” Peddie muses. “Imagine what you could charge for that.”

“I’m not sure there is anyone any better than us [at business],” Peddie says.

Surely he didn't mean to sound so arrogant. He must have meant, "It's great that there was already a huge market for pro sports here and we have a monopoly."

The LA comparison is interesting as there is a much more competitive market there - not just from other pro sports but from college, too. So that's competition not just for fans but for investment, advertising and government money, too.

That was when Bruce McNall owned the team with The Great One leading the way.

OK, just make it the Lakers and the Galaxy, then. My point is still valid.

The Kings did make the playoffs last season at least. And they are a young team with upside.

Toronto FC’s squad headed to Seattle on Thursday afternoon after training at Cherry Beach earlier in the day.

Striker Maicon Santos trained on Thursday and should be fit enough to be included in the squad for Saturday’s match against the Sounders. The Brazilian appears to have recovered from in the a knock to the head sustained in the goalless draw at home to Real Salt Lake in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.

This comment really burned my balls from the Globe article:

AEG don't own the Lakers. They are their landlord.

AEG, Comcast/Philly and Kroenke/Denver are organized similarly to MLSE. They're the peer group. They've all done much better at this than Peddie et al have, not that Teachers seem to care.

I found this an interesting tidbit in the MLSE article.

"They may occur just in time for MLSE to launch its own sports network (working title: Real Sports) for which the company has secured a licence.“Imagine a channel that had Leafs, Raptors, TFC and Marlies games on it,” Peddie muses. “Imagine what you could charge for that.”

Maybe MLSE will roll Raptors TV and Leafs TV into one channel (and move some TFC games there as well) leaving GOL TV to be strictly other leagues (Bundesliga, La Liga etc.)

I'm not sure if one sentence has ever summed up everything that's wrong with MLSE as perfectly as this.

On the flip side, no one would take offense to him saying "Imagine if the Leafs, Raptors, TFC and Marlies were all championship winning teams. Imagine how profitable that would be".

It's comments like this and the ones Anselmi has said that has me fuming.

You're right, no one would have a problem with him bragging about profits from winning.

But he's coming right out and saying, "It would be great to hold all the sports fans in Toronto hostage to us."
