Toronto FC v Earthquakes
BMO Field 4:00 PM

Watch: CBC
Listen: FAN590

Toronto FC has the opportunity to reduce their playoff deficit to 2 points against one of the teams tied for the last playoff spot in a must win situation on home soil. Anything less than a victory will practically eliminate TFC from the post season. The Reds have performed well in the last 2 games and should be healthy and motivated against San Jose. It will be a difficult task against a quality opponent but I'm predicting a victory for the Reds to make the playoff race much more interesting down the stretch.

Well, Barrett and Santos will both be well rested and hopefully fully fit to go the whole game. If that's the case we should be able to pull out the win.

Does anyone know if Nana's back yet?

I'm guessing San Jose will sit back - so we should attack, attack, and then attack...

I'd go balls out for goals right from the opening whistle...

In fact, I'd rather lose this game 3-2, giving up 3-goals on counter-attack from SJ, then sitting on our asses and playing for a 0-0 - hoping for a goal to come from somewhere (aka Preki Ball)...

Daso - send the lads out for goals...!!!

Last year they came and stole a point at home in almost equally important game late in the season. Need to avenge the lost points this time.

Start Santos and Mista up front with Dero, LaBrocca, Gargan, JDG in the mid, Garcia, Cann, Nana/Harden, Usanov at the back and Frei in net.

Barrett comes in for either Santos/Mista to continue the beat down. Peterson/Sanyang comes in for LaBrooca/Gargan as relievers.
Ibrahim comes in to play pylon when needed.

I'm with you! I would be more proud to watch a 3-2 loss than a 0-0 tie. A tie at this point of the season would basically be a loss anyways.

At this point, TFC's chances of qualifying for the next stage of CCL are really no better than their chances of making the playoffs. In both scenarios, TFC will have to win all of their remaining matches and hope for some other results to go their way. If I'm Dasovic, I dress the best starting 11 against San Jose and go all out for a victory to get back in the playoff hunt...

I love the idea of the ccl, but i think i'm coming round to wanting to focus more on the league.

reason why, it's much more immediate, we get into the playoffs, we're going to have to hit some serious form to win enough games to do that, which we can then carry over to the playoffs and see what happens.

we qualify for the ccl, then what? we wait until february, when during pre-season and with our squad presumably having gone through a fairly major turn over, we have to play against a team that on paper will probably be as good if not better than us, and in all likelihood is in the middle of their season. we get one showpiece home game, and it's done.

as for the "if I'm Dasovic" question, well then i'd say all that counts double, why sacrifice the playoffs for ccl qualification when there's a very good chance that come february, he won't even be the head coach any more.

as I said, i love the idea of the ccl, but it doesn't really work well with how mls schedule is set up. having said that, if we did qualify, the february date would put a much needed sense of urgency into the club, I'm sick of the hlaf arsed pre-seasons under Mo.

We face two of the teams directly in front of us (Seattle and San Jose), what do we think?

40 points is probably not even going to be enough to make the playoffs this year.

I consider the San Jose and Seattle games both must wins. They are the 2 teams we are chasing (along with Colorado I guess). Ties or losses will not cut it.

Edit: Looking at the standings 4 wins out of the last 5 games may not even be enough.

42 points = tiebreaker, 43 = in the playoffs. So, anything less than four wins and we're likely done.

That said, didn't we blow it vs SJ in the last few minutes last year near the end of the season... in Toronto? We were up 1-0 with less than 15 to play (maybe even extra time) and SJ scored?

Yep, esquire added time and they scored, their subs who NEE had been taunting went right over to that corner to rub it in.

should be interesting to see if NEE has anything special planned beyond their usual subs-baiting.

Wasn't that the game where Serioux was leading the line out and had 3 SJ guys offside, and then you see Garcia backpeddling towards his own goal line which played everyone ONSIDE and then they scored...I thought Serioux's head was gonna explode...he looked like he wanted to KILL Garcia!!

I think you're both going overboard on Harden...

Has he been brilliant...? NO...

Is he suicide at LB...? No...

That being said, if Garcia has enough in the tank to start - I'd start him today at LB...

He'll need to be watched though... Garcia worked his ass off in Mexico. He's not a young lad - if he starts, Daso should have a sub pre-picked for Garcia b/c we've had and have a busy ride right now...

The thing is we never replaced guevara. Also we dont have a vitti esque player who can beat 2-3 players. Yet we have a mista & maicon to finish? Very interesting observation here:

Frank Yallop has had 3 years with San Jose Earthquakes, and the squad has remained relatively the same. They're playing good flowing soccer, passing well and pressing properly. Likely to make playoffs this year.

Toronto FC have had 5 managers in 4 years. The squad has changed dramatically every year, still unable to play proper soccer, and it's basically the same result every year. No Playoffs again.

But, of course, Mo Must Go right? Preki must go right? I'd be incredibly scared if any one of these Preki haters had their way. You give the coach time to build, and if the players don't like him, hit the road. We are probably the worst team in the league in the style we play. That much is clear. We are also clearly the worst users of the salary cap. Toronto FC is in the wrong hands.

Oh, and the best part! Every team who's signed a DP (Except maybe Landin) has had success with them. We signed De Guzman who clearly doesn't give a shit about playing and Mista who doesn't start.

But let's just pay increased Seasons Tickets prices and keep on singing! :D

Well except they`ve consistently had to change their formula in terms of their best players. No more Ronnie O or Huckerby.

I honestly don`t think waiting three years to make the 7th spot in the playoffs is a model for anything. They could just as easily be looking at it from the outside next year.

I also don`t think the players hate Frank Yallop so much they`d pine for him to be fired.

Watch the game....it's through the middle.....where JDG and Gargan are.
Cronin is outplaying them both.

We are under the illusion that one or two players or managers being gone will fix this team, yet when we watch this team one thing is very very clear.

TORONTO FC IS NOT PLAYING REAL SOCCER. Every single other team in this league has some kind of system of play. Our system is long ball bullshit giveaway rough tackle crap.

I agree with you there. There are so few valuable pieces in this mess it`s laughable.

Honestly, the only MLS Caliber players I see in this team are:

De Rosario
Dan Gargan
Ty Harden
Adrian Cann
Nick LaBrocca
Maicon Santos
Chad Barrett
Jacob Peterson
Stefan Frei

Even then, only De Rosario, Gargan, Cann, Frei and Barrett are starters.
Everyone else can go. Nana Attakora can go to Europe if he doesn't want to be here.

While i almost agree with your starters list...

Harden just can`t stick with is mark half the time, gets turned far too often. I`d argue Gargan (while i`d be in favor of keeping him) is in many ways positionally poor.

The best teams in this league can find talent on minimal salaries. That`s why as much as keeeping many of these guys is the safe route, I`d rather show them the door.

Also major lol @ saying he's cost us 10 games by missing easy tap ins ...... so what you're saying is he should be the MLS leader in goals (by a wide margin in fact) if we're going to add a minimum of 10 to his current tally. gmafb.

Man, Jimmy, you're just not being straight. He's not "walking away from challenges." That's hyperbole, and insulting to everyone's intelligence. He IS sucking and you have a valid point that maybe benching him for a game would make him wake up..

But I don't think effort is the issue. THe issue is he can't handle the pressure of his role and simply doesn't have game-dominating skills to begin with. He's a contributor, a role-player with good ball handling, reasonable tackling skills and reasonable passing skills. His strength is reading and breaking up game flow.

He's never going to dominate games, and the more involved he tries to get -- the harder he tries --the more inconsistent his performance gets. It's sad to watch at this point.

Should have been clearer, he's walking away instead of making those challenges, the challenges he SHOULD be making because he's the first man there. He doesn't stick his foot out when he should. I see it all the time. He just doesn't try. Benching him will show that that's not good enough.

Completely agree. I haven't watched much of this game (I'm at work), but what I saw I actually noted the exact same thing. He looked like he was trying to be everywhere at once and being let down by people around him. If JDG's receiving poor passes and getting put in bad spots and the people hes trying to pass to don't do anything to help him, what can he do other then get frustrated. I still think hes a good signing, he just needs better players around him
