What's everyones thought's on the poor ticket sales for July 1 :canada:? Is it the USL opponent, the long weekend, the price of tickets (ok the top price is $210 but they go for as low as 24 bucks and even te cheap seats are still avail)?

I got my regular STH seats plus 4 more but ....:noidea:what gives?

And by the way Carver's piece where he's almost beggin people to buy tix looks kinda sad. I mean sales must be reallly slow: http://web.mlsnet.com/news/team_news.jsp?ymd=20080625&content_id=168279&vkey=news_t280&fext=.jsp&team=t280

Its probably the fact that they were an extra order on top of the seasons tickets and unlike the All Star Game, they weren't availble to order with the initial package. Next year, I would expect they'd make it a seasons ticket option rather than a separate order.

The Holiday weekend might affect things too.

Just some food for thought,

a friends father bought season tickets because it was more economical to buy a full season ticket so his daughter could see Beckham. Believe it or not, people went for the entertainment value of TFC, not for the love of the club. The environment created by the supporters is an extra bonus for those people. We have a lot of "casual" fans in the crowd....it shows on television too. Every game I look to see if I can see the outline of maple leaf in the stands....more times than not I can still see it. Hopefully, these fans can be converted to supporting all things TFC or eventually leave.:hump:

tickets for such an event...Tickets should be capped at $15-$50!

Whats with Bmo Field and its Top PRICES...for Special Events....!

The game in Montreal was $10-30
The CMNT in MOntreal was $10-30

The CL in TORONTO is like $15- $210
CMNT FIRENDLY vs CR was someting like $15 -$210
(Greedy BAstards!!)

If 16000 have been sold! the 4000 Im guessing are the higher end seats....priced way out of control for such a game!

There's also the problem of announcing it so late into the season. I'm sure there are other people like myself who have to give fairly good notice on vacation plans. The dates for this game were announced a little over a month ago. I had to have already booked time off work by then. So to people, like me, who were planning vacation in order to not miss any home games, this appeared like the best time of the summer. Same problem with the Pachuca game

I'm sure next season things will be handled differently, as Batman lists above. Most likely we'll see these games included in the Season Ticket package...we might also see the friendlies disappear since they might not really be worth doing (difficult to shoe-horn into an already busy fixture list).

Do you think that if the July 1 game were against Montreal that it wouldn't have sold out?

Bottom line is that the tickets are over priced and the opponents aren't attractive.

ya many people exspect them to pull a Champions League at the European level of skill and support out of thin air!

It takes time to create a Champions League, and the longer it takes for people to support it in North America the longer it takes to grow.

And alot of them as i said only see the matches later in Champions League..not the qualifying games where they play in smaller poorer clubs, even smaller then TFC in stadiums at 15,000 or less with not much money. But true supporters support the team no matter who, or where they play!

I think the Houston game was sold-out based on tickets sold, but the actually attendance was 18k - so technically a sellout. I’m pretty sure that James is right about the Benfica game however, it was not a sellout based on tickets sold or people in the stands.

I don’t think 16-18k is anything to worry too much about. Weekday cup games are a tough sell even in Europe. I can think of a few EPL teams who have failed to sellout CL group games.

james

It was strange, because I remember them announcing the attendance (18k) and calling it a sellout at the same time. I remember thinking "What the hell?" at the time. I assume that this was there way of saying it was sold out based on ticket sales.

I still don’t think not selling out these games should a huge concern. I wouldn’t be shocked if they get within spiting distance of sellout come July 1st.

I asked Paul about that directly, and he said that they report tickets scanned, not tickets purchased (the joys of a digital system). This means that even though our games have been sellouts this year, attendence is sometimes less.

Oh, and as for it looking even worse than it is, look to the beer garden. There are always tons of people there, not to mention those getting food/hitting the washroom, and in the case of rainy games, just standing under the stands out of the rain.

I understand why this game isn't sold out now. Vancouver Sucks, and I don't mean that in a "I hate them" way I mean that as in the "I could get a few buddies together and we'd be realistically competitive" kinda way.
I couldn't watch the game last night it was like last year's TFC after an intense 8 hour fitness session and without O'brien or Edu, just very weak.

Not quite - the problem is that the south end is also the "family seats" as they are the cheapest. $24 to sit there v. $70 to sit where the most seats are available.

.

I don't understand...if they report tickets scanned, then the games are true sellouts, right? that's actual people in the stadium, as they are scanned right at the gate.

Cuz if they reported tickets purchased that number would probably always be higher than tickets scanned (given people get sick, or their car breaks down, etc, and they can't attend).

Regardless of the competition, this game is very meaningful. We win this tourny and we're suddenly up against from very decent CONCACAF competition.

Despite the fact that Carver's called for a full house on the day, you know it won't even be close.

I can tolerate people moaning in the stands about having to stand, I can tolerate the overwhelmingly vanilla crowd we have at the ground, but the laissez-faire attitude behind it all (translation: people who have no passion in their lives, and think a trip to the mall & lunch at McDonald's constitutes a fun day out) irks me to no end.

This team should be playing to a packed house, regardless of the competition.

Working... again.
I'm even finding it hard to make it out to the local for games <sigh>.

With this game on a Tuesday I expect you will see a decrease in "casual fans" travelling to Toronto for the day when they have to work the next day.

yup.. If people are really and truly passionate for TFC, it doesn't matter who the opposition is.
I mean, if you're a fan of TFC, why do you care about the level of opposition? You're there for TFC right? Or maybe some people are not really and truly fans, and are more interested in the opposition (Becks, NY, etc) than TFC. ;)

Even the price thing -- people say the price might be too high for this level of competition.
But you are paying the same price as ever to see TFC, and John Carver looks like he's gonna play the typical starting lineup of any league game. So the competition isn't dropping on the TFC side. This'll be the same goddamn team you see against that shitbox called the San Jose Earthquakes, but nobody complains about paying to see that matchup. And lower div teams often play up to the level of the competition in big tourneys, so Whitecaps and MTL will give it a good effort.

As someone who has worked in the past for a professional sports team in Toronto, I can honestly say that a MASSIVE amount of bullshitting goes in to the attendance number announced at a game. Strange combos of ticket sales, gate counts, corporate comps, etc. all get thrown into a pool (and sometimes double-counted) to make the highest number possible. Sell-out crowds are announced all the time when patches of empty seats are clearly visible.

a three team tournament was always going to be a hard sell, we need another couple of clubs, Ottawa, edmon, Calgary to enter via the MLS or USL to make
the tournament interesting...

Anyone knows if Vancouver or Montreal supporters are coming to the games?

I remember Chicago brought supporters last year and they filled up section 104. It was fun yelling at them. If tickets are still available, VAN or MON could do that and the game will be more interesting.

I have a bunch of friends who wanted to come but here are their issues with this game
1. only $55+ tickets available, why would they pay that when they can get ticket 2 tickets off scalpers for $70 any other game
2. game is at 4pm most people who work in an office are getting Monday off instead of Tuesday for Canada Day
3. a lot of them are going to the cottage for the long weekend and cant afford another $120 after they've payed $200 for gas

the game should have probably been 7pm or later and tickets should have been half what they are for the top end

I'm sorry, this whole "going to the cottage" for the long weekend excuse is lame. So come back Monday, instead of Tuesday, and get your ass to BMO for the game. If it was a league game, would it be any different? I think not.

I think it's good for the FO, and for people that like the atmosphere of a packed house that it's not a sell out.
Up untill now the tickets sold themselves, or at the least there was never an issue about a lack of demand. If we ever expand, or if we suck, or if people bought tickets for Beckham and they find out he refuses to play here...then the FO will have to figure out how to sell tickets.
This is good practice for them. See what works...and what doesn't.

I think it's saturation…too many games…too much money…in a short time period.

Starting next week we have 1 league, 4 non league and the All Star game at home…I’ve reached my financial threshold for football in July!

Here’s my problem…I have 4 season’s tickets at $44 a pop. In order to attend these two additional games it’s costing me an additional $350 (if you have seats in the higher priced sections $60/$480 and $80/$640)… I bought tickets in the Bunker for these two games at less than half the price of my regular tix. I would far rather have had these CL games as part of my ST rather than the friendlies!

I must say with all the talk on this board and in my football circle everyone wants to see TFC until you tell them it’ll cost $60! How many are prepared to pay that? Apparently…not as many as MLSE thought.

Talk of BMO expansion is fine if those 5,000 seats are $20 a pop…if they were all $60 I think they’d struggle to sell them all…IMO…

Yard+pool= yard work+maintenance. lol I hate cutting grass. If it were up to me I'd let it get as high as the friggin amazon rain forest. That's why people like me end up in high rise condos.
I tried the "let the grass grow" with the parents but they thought they'd lose the dogs. lol

I agree... when the expansion talk happens I always wonder... just because you have 5000 on a waiting list doesn't mean you can sell 5000 or 10000 seats easily. People sign up for lists cuz they are free. The true test is putting money down.
I also think some people went crazy for season's tickets due to scarcity at the time. People bought on the assumption everything will be sold out so they had to get in. Maybe that's not such a factor now, cuz it's not season's tickets here. Nonetheless, if the waiting list people were really as keen as people thought, these games would have sold out already.
Just a note of caution for the expansionists.......

Yes and that's why rushing into stadium expansion doesn't necessarilly makes sense! Ya, they could sell the cheaper seats no problem but why spend millions on expanding cheap seats with their limited profit potential?

They will want to expand the more expensive seats but (as you say), they get expensive fast and many won't pony up for that.

I will never pay more than $30 to watch MLS level soccer.

I think most of the general soccer viewing public would say their threshold is right around the same level. MLSE needs to realize they cant be selling their product like it is world class. But who am I kidding, that isnt going to happen. The CSA has already proven they would rather play to an empty stadium than sell tickets cheap, I doubt MLSE is much different.

This will be ridiculous and everyone knows it. Its going to be TFC running up the score against two very weak opponents and I don't think people should be shelling out extra to see a team dominate another team like that.
However, having said that I will be there :)

I have to disagree. I know atleast 10 people on that waiting list who are dying to get season's tickets, begging me to take them to my appointment to buy additional seats in late fall. I have 6 tickets to the Canada Cup games and having trouble getting rid of them for free to the same people I know would dish out the money for season's tickets in a second. The fact of the matter is, watching TFC against Vancouver and Montreal simply isn't all that appealing to the part timers. You can't say though that these part timers wouldn't buy season's tickets if they got the chance to. Remember, they get the chance to see Beckham, Blanco and potentially other major DPs coming into the MLS.

Also, the problem is with the current season ticket holders and the prices they charged for these games to renew their seats. If these current seat holders opted in to buy their own seats for these games then we would've had sell outs. I'd love to see the actual number of people that did this, I suspect it's low. Main reason, because of the prices. I'm stupid, I payed 50 bucks a ticket to see TFC play Vancouver, Montreal, I didn't want to, but I thought the uptake would he higher. Then I found out it was easy to get tickets in the south end, how? if these are supposed to be real supporters? well, because not even they had an interest in buying their tickets. I wish I knew before buying my own tickets that I'd get some in the south end, you can bet next year I won't be buying the Canada Cup games because I'm simply not interested in paying that kind of money when I'll be able to get cheaper tickets somewhere else.

Hey Pachuco…how many of the 10 are willing to pay over $1000 bucks for the season?

There were tix available this year at the $67 and $85 price…but when you tell someone there going to pay over $1500 they go, "Holy shit! I thought they were only $200 for the year!!!

I bet at least half on that waiting list wouldn't buy it a grand a seat…like Rocker said, being on the list is free…ask your 10 to cough up a G-note…

They are willing to pay as much as I payed or they won't be going to the appointment. they are clear on that. They know exactly how much I payed which was 1800 for 2 seats in 109. that was including all star game. So I suspect prices for the season won't be much different next year for my section.

To answer your question, I myself wouldn't have payed $1500/seat last year. How many of those seats actually fill up the stadium? You will always have trouble filling seats at that cost. That's why if they expand the stadium with prices at the same and below my price level I believe you'll sell a good number of those sold out on season tix. Close off the corners and put another section on top of the supporters and you've expanded with pretty cheap seating that you can probably just about sell out on season tix.

yellowfellow
06-26-2008, 02:23 PM
I agree that most people wouldn't pay $1000 for the season. I doubt there were 16000 season tickets sold this year. Think about it, if that's the case, they only have 4000 tickets left for the half-season, all season Marlies pack, group tix, individual tix, etc.

I also don't understand what's the fuse about a non-sellout game vs VAN or MON. ManU doesnt sell out games aginst Derby or FA Cup games. And as far as I am concerned, I got my tix to the VAN and MON games and I am getting first dip to tix in the group stage.

Well depending on where they are on the list they shouldn't have a problem at that price…there was turnover in 107 and 108 (more than half of the row two up from me are new)…and I know a guy in 124 who said the same.

When I asked my agent about new subscribers he said their interest waned when he told them the price…he guessed about 1 in 4…
