Duanne Rollins reveals that the CCL prize money is

$36,000.

Meanwhile the Superliga has prize money of $1 million.

No wonder priorities are so messed up.

$36k might cover some of the airfare, and that's if you win.

As it stands, the only real financial benefit for any MLS side is the extra tickets sold.

Duane's comment:

Ok, maybe a few. If MLS is serious about competing internationally maybe it should take some of SUM's $1 million and put it towards its clubs playing in real competitions, rather than made-for-TV specials.

Reasoning:

CCL- $36,000 + Congratulations you play Barca!!!!

Superliga- $1mil + Go home and wank off to winning a fucking farce of a tournament!!!

I hate Superliga! It must die a quick but painful death!

........in addition to prize money for the FIFA Club World Cup:

The Organising Committee also decided to increase the prize money by USD 1 million for the 2007 event, putting a total of USD 16 million up for grabs in Japan. The champion will take home USD 5 million, the runner-up will net USD 4 million, and 3rd place (USD 2.5 million), 4th place (USD 2 million), the two 5th-placed teams (USD 1 million) and 7th place (USD 500,000) will all receive handsome payouts as well.

The CCL winner does get invited to the FIFA Club World Cup though, which has its own prize money. $1 mil. is the number I've seen just for participating.

Edit: Thanks BakaGaijin for those numbers.

The figures I quoted are from 2007.......they have probably gone up since.

Good points.

Playing any top Euro side in a competition that means something would be awesome.
Honestly, if winning it didn't involve the invo to the Club World Cup, it would make sense to send out the scrubs every game.

CCL can make plenty of money, but the players get hosed.

For the CCL games at BMO, if they get 15,000 seats sold per game at $40 average per seat, that's almost $2 million in gross receipts from 3 games.

Income for club: $2 million less gameday expenses Add in beer, food, parking revenues.
I'm suspect Jack Warner & Co. gets a cut somewhere.

Prize money (assuming all goes to players):

$36,000 / 24 players = $1,500 per player

Yes, the players are getting hosed.

Now if they won the Club World Cup (I know, stop laughing hysterically), it would be $5 million / 24 players which works out to over $200k per player). That looks a lot nicer than winning CONCACRAP.

i am sure concacrap gets some of the gate receipts...

I know we love the CCL, but how many of us would attend the superliga matches if TFC every qualified...

Exactly what I would've posted. Concacaf usually finished around 3rd-5th too.

Wasn't there something a few years ago about players complaining that they weren't saying anything from the 1Mill that you get for winning SUperliga?

I think it was that the Mexican players were getting most of the prize money if they won, but the MLS players were only getting a small portion if they won.

so each TFC player got about $1458 for making the group. and $3500 for beating Cruz Azul... So about $5000. 12.5% pay increase for Dan Gargen! woo hoo! ;)

do you have a link to the full new CBA or is this just from an article?

I think your math is a bit off. I believe that the prize totals are what the team receives. The players receive a percentage of the prize total, and that is then split up amongst them.

So.....the players would probably receive only half of the $35 000. That means that each player probably received around $725 for qualifying for the group stage.

The $3500 for beating Cruz Azul would be a team bonus. So each player probably only received around $72.91.

I couldn't find the current CBA, however, here are the details from the old CBA regarding this event:

(vii) Tournaments and Exhibition Games: If an MLS Team or MLS receives prize
money by virtue of the Team’s performance and/or participation in a compulsory tournament
i.e., where MLS is required to participate by U.S. Soccer, CONCACAF or FIFA), Players
competing in that tournament will receive the following:
(a) if the Team or MLS receives up to $200,000 in prize money, fifty percent
(50%) of such prize money; or
(b) if the Team or MLS receives prize money in excess of $200,000, the
Players will receive 50% of the first $200,000 and thirty percent (30%) of
amounts over $200,000, up to a maximum payment to the Players
(collectively) of $200,000.
(c) With respect to the CONCACAF Champions Cup tournament, the
following prize money shall be paid to each team, unless the amount in (a)
or (b) above is greater, in which case the amount in (a) or (b) above shall
be paid:
Team advances to quarter final: $11,000
Team advances to semi-final: $16,500 additional ($27,500 total)
Team advances to final: $22,000 additional ($49,500 total)
Team wins final: $27,500 additional ($77,000 total).
Notwithstanding the above, in the event of CONCACAF Champions Cup
format changes, MLS and the Union shall meet and confer concerning
amendments to the above bonus schedule. In no event shall the potential
prize money decrease as a result of such format changes.

I hope things have changed in the new CBA, cuz that sucks royally.
35000 would be like pocket change for the team itself...

Here I was thinking Dan Gargan got a nice raise :(
