THe officials were giveing EVERYTNIG our way for most of the match.
FACT
called back goal
kick after kick, even teh commentator said "TFC getting every chance here. . . .. and they cant even get it into the area.. . "

says it all.
Poor showing, was it the heat, exhaustion? fitness?
without Labrocca /JDG and compunded by the points loss. . this competition may be over before it started.

still. . not a meltdown like MTL. . .
pps

Gerba will crusify us in MLS next year, adn no doubt easily eclipse barrett's goal tally.

If refs try to fix things, they always give some calls the other way to make it less obvious.

Neither of those red cards were justified. Yellow, at worst.

Barrett just biked by me at my building this morning... couldn't believe it. Not like he was flying by, he was biking on the sidewalk (not a fan of that) avoiding pedestrians. JDG biked by me Saturday at the cne leaving the stadium. Both completely unexpected bump ins.

(Not so) Sober Second Thoughts: Paging Declan Hill (http://www.24thminute.com/2010/08/not-so-sober-second-thoughts-paging.html)

I have no proof that tonight’s CONCACAF Champions League referee Marlon Mejia is crooked. Sadly, it’s next to impossible to know whether he finally has the money to go on that 2-week Alaskan cruise he’s always wanted to experience after his performance in the TFC – Arabe Unido game.

We can, however, safely conclude that he’s incompetent. Or, just terribly biased against the Gringos (hoser-style). You pick.

"Travesty"

That was the one-word message from a colleague upon the conclusion of the Crew's 1-0 loss at Santos Laguna tonight. (http://www.concacafchampions.com/page/CL/Video/HighlightsDetail2/0,,12856~2133846,00.html)
He wasn't referring to the winning goal, scored by Santos with its last attacking touch in the final moments of second-half stoppage time.
He wasn't referring to the four yellow cards the Crew was shown, one of which earned Emilio Renteria a suspension for the next CCL game.
He wasn't referring to the action in the bench area, which included some nasty exchanges between players and coaches from both teams. Midfielder Duncan Oughton said Santos coach Ruben Omar Romano slapped him in the back of the head as he bent down to pick up a ball for a first-half throw-in.
He certainly wasn't referring to the fashion in which a makeshift lineup played against their Mexican foes in Estadio Corona. The effort was admirable from a cramping, wheezing group of players who had played too many minutes in recent weeks and some who hadn't played enough.
He was referring to a goal scored by Crew defender Andy Iro in the 22nd minute that according to the Crew was disallowed because striker Emilio Renteria was wearing a jersey without a name or number when the goal was scored.

Totally agree. By participating in this farce we give it legitimacy, and that's the last thing the CCL deserves right now.

It's true both of the red cards seemed harsh, but I also hesitate to say that the ref was the reason we lost. Our marking in the box all night was poor (their goal scorer was completely open, and I believe the ball did cross the line).

The ref and linesmen may have been incompetent, but it went both ways. I think it was very stupid for our players and Preki to make the post-game comments that they did.

Because now it's only going to get worse.

Ref was incompetent, not bought off...

We were EVEN MORE INCOMPETENT - and that started from the top, Preki...

Not only did he choose to start the B-team, even after we exposed Cruz Azul for doing the same thing, he completely messed up the subs as we're down a goal but Mista sits on the bench...

The Preki fans will say Mista is "slightly hurt", well then Preki messed up even more. If the man is hurt and not fit to play when we're down a goal, no trainer, doctor, or therapist on the planet would say "...bring him, let him sit on the plane, train, sit on the bench, sit on the plane home..." when he could be getting treatment on the injury...

The players play the games - but when the manager is so shit-stupid in all of his decisions, it makes it damn hard to pull out a win or draw...

Well, we have Salt Lake next. Hopefully Chad is fit, and we have a good squad. Only Nana is absent I believe?

Any updates on Maicon Santos?

I'd have to say last night's shit-show definitely ranks in the top 3 of most painful TFC matches I have ever watched. Yes, right up there with last year's 5-0 demolition at the hands of RBNY. The incompetent refereeing, the shameless diving, the fact we played like shite - everything about it was dismal.

While TFC deserved nothing from this game, I am amazed at the lack of outrage by the MLS Teams over the state of officiating in a number of these CCL games. I have gone from excitement to zero interest in the competition.. in fact, it is going to cost us a playoff spot .... shame on FIFA to let these Central American teams and refs debase the sport.

Actually, TFC, Columbus, and RSL have been very outspoken regarding the level of officiating in the tournament thus far. Unfortunately, the only immediate result might be fines levied against management and players. If the CCL is to be taken seriously in the future this is an issue that needs to be seriously examined by CONCACAF officials. I honestly thought I was watching a recreational league match at times last night...

The big boys at MLSE should have called Preki 30-seconds after the match (if they have cell service down there?) and told them to fire away on camera, in print, everywhere...

"...We'll pay any fine the MLS or CONCACAF decides to shell out, hell I have enough in my pocket. So get in front of every mic and tear into this sham with guns'a'blazing..."

Shoulda, but wouldnt ever happen. Last night was definately a discrace to the sport, and somehow makes me glad MLS has the officials they do. Those guys make Toledo look like a referee god.

Maybe they did. After all, we got quite a few quotes from Preki and the boys.

You obviously haven't read Declan Hill. Refs fixing a match always give calls the other way to make it less obvious. It's the 2 red cards and the fouls called that fixed this match.

Time for an MLS boycott until concacaf gets its act together?

this has to happen, the clubs need to let the league know that this tournament is a farce...maybe we shouldnt be trying to excel in it...even if we had our first team in there last night, calls would still go against us...welcome to CONCACAF...just ask the CSA.

What happened to Columbus last night, if reported accurately, is one of the most unfair things I have ever heard of on a field of soccer.

Whether or not the yellow should have been given, that goal should NEVER have been disallowed. MLS should go over Concacaf to FIFA on that one. That game should be replayed.

Can you imagine what would be going on here if that had happened to TFC?

I know it's Bill Archer, but to see him taking the side of TFC in anything is kind of remarkable

It kills me to point this out, but Concacaf will get off the hook for the Columbus game because the disallowed goal was clearly offside (which the refs also missed)
