Great interview with Nana on the Fan590 Soccer Show:

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/SoccerShow/~3/vCP4NXkBUM8/ss_20100805_224655--August-5th-Edition-of-The-Soccer-Show.mp3 (http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/SoccerShow/%7E3/vCP4NXkBUM8/ss_20100805_224655--August-5th-Edition-of-The-Soccer-Show.mp3)

(Nana's interview starts a little after the 6 minute mark and is a little over 7 minutes long).

He describes playing in Montagua's stadium.

Some key points:

* The bus they travelled on was "small" [He didn't say if it was yellow and had flashing lights]
* They didn't sleep all night in the hotel
* Preki's pregame talk at the hotel was very important
* When they went down a goal in the 6th minute, it was DeRo (especially) and Preki's encouragement that allowed them to regroup, in the face of a stadium with a hostile crowd
* Henry was played for depth reasons
* Barrett's goal was very important, because it deflated the Montagua players' hopes

“We have got to win these games, we have got to win the Champions League and we have got to get our clubs playing toe to toe against the Mexicans and we have got to hope to some day be one of the best leagues, if not the best league, in the region,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said last week.

AMEN to that...

The interview is with Nana, rather than Nane. It's still very great, however. :)

It seems pretty simple, Don, increase the salary cap and the roster size.

See what Nana said about starting Henry because of depth issues?

How about you raise the cap and roster size Mr Don!

I'm beginning to believe Nane could be a really good midfield destroyer....he's big, tough, and unlike Sanyang can keep possession and distribute the ball...it's a tough position to learn but while he's made some glaring errors, his upside seems better than anyone else TFC currently have.

I might be opening up another can of worms here and leading us down a path well travelled in the past, but wouldn't reinstating the reserve league solve this problem?

They did raise the cap with the last agreement, and it will continue to go up in increments for the next five years (whether or not the amount is enough is up for debate).

As for roster size, well -- the EPL plays a 38 schedule, not to mention the FA cup and League cups, and Europe for 7 clubs. That's sometimes around 50 or 60 games for the top clubs in a season . . and they've just capped their rosters at 25 (ours are 24, and even with these 6 new CCL games we'll be at 42 for the year, not including MLS play-offs). And, given that we can call up Academy players for the NCC and CCL, I'd actually say the rosters sizes are all right now.

Don't know if you saw this, but it's being talked about (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/steve_davis/07/30/mls.schedule/index.html), expanded rosters, 34 matches etc

If they do that, cut the stupid midseason friendlies.

I agree that the roster size isn't the problem, it's the salary cap. Even with the current roster size, a good number of players will never see the pitch unless there is an extreme emergency because the quality simply isn't there.

If the salary cap was increased to afford better players so that the drop in quality between a starter and backup wasn't so extreme, we would be in better shape.

^All that is true (and yeah, it's true that next season the number may have to go up, but probably not too drastically, maybe only to 25). Being able to call-up academy players for non-MLS games is probably the key.

Good GMs have been able to find good depth players for cheap... And TBH, those depth players are going to be mostly likely from US/CDN... and that pool is rather thin in some areas, and MLS scouting isn't very good ATM.

I'm convinced that there are good players out there for cheap, but it's just US is so huge, and scouting is so crap. I'm talking about guys like Gargan who came out of nowhere to stick to MLS teams.

And the English team consistently underperforms and players who play in the EPL seem to have a higher propensity for injury and fatigue.

The best players in the last World Cup were, by and large, players who played in Spain and Germany, not the EPL, because they weren't worn out from too much football.

Reinstate the Reserve league and increase the player cap to 28 players.

sounds good.. i prefer the balanced sked with the 2 new teams coming in, at least for a year.

MLS used to play 32 league games per season (most seasons). but since TFC arrived they've been set on 30.
But if they could fit 32 in 1996, there's no reason they can't do 34 now....
Those friendlies can be dropped or reduced. Some teams in MLS play more friendlies than TFC typically does. Drop that Superliga shit.

Interesting fact: the 2001 season saw teams play an uneven number of games. 26 or 27. Why? September 11th shut the season down for awhile.

Ah, good points. You could argue the fatigue has something to do with no winter break, too, but . . .

Yeah, it would be nice to see the reserve league again. Or even having reserve teams playing in smaller leagues (a la the CSL).

I love worms...my dog on the other hand..not so much. Anyway, there is 'some' talk about the reserve league coming back but it would be in cahoots with USL/NASL in some form or manner.
I know the USSF is suppose to hand down the requirements for becoming a Div II club to USL and NASL next week so there may be some more news later on, but that is the scuttlebutt for right now.
