The team that won this game for TFC is no doubt the team that should have started.

After last game I said TFC didn't know how to win games they should lose, today they won a game they shouldn't have. So I'll eat my words. It was a great game from TFC from about the 50th minute on. If we could get that kind of offensive flow going regularly, we would be a force in MLS. But thats an issue to discuss on another day. Great result, and all that matters: OFF TO THE NEXT ROUND! :scarf::scarf::scarf:

Well that for me means a hell of a lot more then beating Montreal's C team last time around. This is what I call a miracle. We had no business coming back to score two goals in Motagua particularly when we looked as bad as we did in the beginning. I'll call this one that miracle of Tegucigalpa.

You know, Maicon is a Preki boy, so I find it really weird that he doesn't start every single game. Especially since the moment he walked on the field he's been damn good for us.

Personally I've never been against playing players off the bench to keep them hungry/more fit later in the game/less fatigued through the course of the season... Santos is not the quickest cookie in the cupboard but he sure as hell was causing problems for those Motogua players..

Defoe is perfect example that comes to mind - lethal off the bench. And Santos did get about 60 minutes tonight, arguably the most important....

Shirts off for the TFC! Shirts off for the TFC!

Santos was unfuckingbelievably awesome. Barrett's finishing was class and i've figured out what it is...

He keeps his head down when he shoots this year. Instead of over thinking and over looking he just puts his head down and hammers the ball cleanly.

That's how you finish. Absolute class from our lads tonight.

The officials should be taken out and shot for their failure to correctly call offsides.

Don't know about that. They are now going to take their tired bodies and sit on a bus for 5 hours straight after the game. Then they'll sit on a plane overnight. Expect a tired TFC at BMO on Saturday.

It's also a lot more games and a lot more traveling for the team.

As happy as I am that we have gone through, I think it's probably the worst thing that could have happened to us in regards to the MLS playoffs.

Frei was man of the match, Santos was great, but if Frei doesn't stop some of those point blank shots we do not get through. Speaking of DP, Mista hasn't done much for us yet, and is out of shape, reminds anyone of Gerba with less weight? Yes he has skills with the ball, but he needs to get in shape quickly.

Disagreed. Mista makes way better decisions and has way better ball skills than Gerba ever did. He might not have the stamina or pace yet, but he's already a significantly better acquisition.

I can only think of 1 big save he had to make that wasnt a poor effort. Nothing against him though, he's awesome. Maicon, held the ball up like a Dichio and started every positive play we had. He was also the only person on the team adding width

Great game by the boys! I knew Santos would do big things from the first game he played for us. But We still need to work on our patience in the attacking third and overall decision making, we're making alot of mistakes . Oh one more thing I want motagua's left winger on our team on lone or something because he is dangerous and would add another skillful dynamic to the team, and the team he plays for can't even beat us so he's obviously wasting his talent. Wow Motagua looked a different team at home, it was pins and needles during the last 20 minutes, especially when Sheriff lobo put his second goal by Frei. Frei was as usual very good. Santos opens so many possiblities, it will be interesting when /if Mista gets into form. And with winning this game we are going to need all the help we can get.

Gargan had his hands full with that winger (quick Mo jot his name down) Glad to see Peterson helping him out at the end. I am liking Nane much more than when he began the season he looks raw at times but has some size and his passing is beyond sanyang's at this point.

we definitely look good in a 4-3-3 mostly because we dont have any functional wingers, unfortunate we dont use it more often, i suspect its because preki prefers the 4-4-2 as well as teh rotation of players doesnt really allow for it. Regardless that was the sort of game we should win regularly (cough philly, cough kc) and it was nice to see us pull through. Looking forward to the group stages. our boys are going to be exhausted

Caught the last half of the game, from what I understand Henry was on the field? can any elaborate? Can he play has TFC signed him?

Henry played about the first 25 minutes of the first half. Gargan started in Midfield. Then Santos was brought on, Gargan moved back to D.

Frei... so amazing. If he keeps this up and we can hold onto him for another season he'll be priced upwards of the infamous "Edu money".
So proud of and happy for Barrett. That boy deserves success.
Santos is very good. He has the skill to take on defenders and beat them on the dribble. We just need our forwards to learn to get into postion better to take his passes when he holds the ball up.
Garcia actually did really well tonight but he did lose his man on a couple of occassions.
Dan Gargan.... fuckin warrior. Leaves everything on the field.

Can't believe anyone would give Preki any credit tonight. We won in spite of his boneheaded line ups and formations.

Very little. The prize money is low. But the home dates mean cash for the club and since Season Tickets don't cover the cost of the games, 18,000 in attendance (or higher) is pure revenue...if they aren't giving away tickets that is.

oh c'mon... you think this goal is more important than Dichio's first goal?

Yep.

It wins something.

Dichio's goal was an eventuality. Someway, somehow, somebody had to score that goal.

Nobody had to score the goal that puts Toronto through.

And this 'greatest goal' will be replaced by a better, more meaningful goal.

The past is best left in the past. What good is Dichio's goal if this team never wins anything?

People seem to love having warm fuzzy feelings about Dichio. I have nothing against him, he has earned his place in TFC lore, but the fact that people seem to want to compare everything to that goal is disappointing. It is such a low standard.

I thought Motagua was the better team in this final leg and yet we grinded out a draw. Why not the same with Cruz Azul or any other Mexican team? If KC can get lucky with the Man United benchers, luck can shine on TFC and pull out a win and a draw like we did against Motagua.

Toronto Secures A Historic Win to Qualify For the Champions League

This evening will in years ahead go down as one of the more historic nights in the history of Toronto FC. Away to a tough Honduran side Toronto scored twice to ecure a berth in the group stages of the CONCACAF Champion League. They played with endeavour and with heart and secured a historic result. 55,572 - one more person than the Impact at the Big O.

I think TFC should be able to finish second in the group. Cruz Azul's probably a different class, but turning over RSL and Αrabe Unido shouldn't beyond TFC capabilities. Managing the squad will be tricky.

I'd personally rather play in the freezing cold and even snow at BMO before going to the Dome...

I know it may be impossible (I don't know off hand what temps the pitch can hold up under), but nothing would be more Canadian than playing in a CL match in those conditions...

It'd be historic - especially if we got lucky enough for a 'snow game'...

Very happy for this result. I was impressed with the way they grinded out the tie (even though they gave up a shitload of chances).

I don't see the reason for shitting on JDG though?

It's almost as if some people on this board want him to fail. I don't get it.

BTW...Garcia played decent tonight. Not enough mention of that.

JDG didn't play great but he wasn't horrible either.

Barrett scored an important goal but as H Bomb has already mentioned, DeRo's was the clincher...not Chad's. Also...Barrett was literally invisible for most of the second half. It was all Maicon up front. He was great and his ball into DeRo on the goal was beautiful.

Also....for those bashing JDG...take a look at who delivered the ball to Maicon for the goal in the first leg.

Worth the money? I don't know about that.
Top quality player? Absolutely.

Can't wait for the group stage.

Guevara haters: He never played like shit when he was on the field. You just don't appreciate his style. He plays a tactful, slow, possession mind style with tremendous vision. I never understood some of the rants on Guevara last year.

His problem has to due with the fact that he would have played about 6 games for us this year had he been with the team due to his commitment to Honduras for the World Cup.

I disagree... I have more respect for the guy not beign forced to learn English... He wasn't going to establish roots here... he's an international...why force the English upon him...

and people are quick to point out he only showed up 1/2 the time... but when he did... he delivered for TFC. I am still waiting for JDG to show up.

Maybe King Dave should try to learn English.

When he actually showed up to play, yes. The rest of the time he was with TFC he phoned it in.

Also....for those bashing JDG...take a look at who delivered the ball to Maicon for the goal in the first leg.

Huh? Maicon didn't score in the first leg. Barrett did, on an assist from De Ro, who got the ball from White.

You're confusing JDG with someone else.

WOW - what an entertaining match. Prekiball failed misreably today, but atleast the man showed that he can adjust when he makes mistakes.

The team that won this game for TFC is no doubt the team that should have started.

I'm glad someone else picked up on this. How the hell does a decent manager put himself in a position where he's forced to make a substitute on 30 minutes? Dropping a 17-year-old into a game of this magnitude? They did the job last night in spite of him. Honestly, Preki's best move this year, still, is bringing in Cann. He can't dine on that for a full season though.

JDG was rubbish again last night.

actually I was a fan of JDG when they brought him in and had high hopes but he continues to disappoint and play like garbage. The excuses of "he's more creative then others" etc are baseless now. He's creative at pushing the ball into places it shouldn't go..the opposing defenders.

How many times did he chip it forward or try to move it forward straight into an opposing honduran. I'm sorry but it's inexcusable...I wouldn't even consider him fantastic if we paid him >100K

At times he's been a top class player but beyond that he's playing to collect a pay cheque and I don't see him having any drive to actually want to succeed with the club. Which is a shame if he still wanted to go back to europe he had an opportunity to demonstrate that's he's top notch but instead he's just lazy.

Also the Preki experiments at times need to stop..play your strong lineup in critical matches the Henry start was absolutely a failboat of a move. I'd like to see more of Henry but as an 18 year old he got dropped into a whole different sort of situation though as a youngin' must have been quite the experience.

Morning, Squire....I'm a huge fan of Donneil Henry but playing the lad out of position in a critical game was a bizarre decision to say the least.

Did anyone else notice how vulnerable we were down our right after Labrocca was replaced by Peterson, whose only contribution was a hissy fit and a card? You get no defence from Peterson. Strange move...if Nick was tired, surely we had another m/f option on the bench.

Anyway - the lads fought hard - heroes all - and we got the shock result we dreamed of.

Give Stefan Frei a big friggin payrise and a long contract NOW.

I have to agree that Usanov can be a littke overzealous with his tackles, and woud have paid dearly in that environment and those officials, play him at home in North America, where the officials MIGHT be a bit more forgiving. Good result, lucky, but a good result.

I think Prekiball is dead..long live Adaptball!
This whole match was about adaptability and not only Preki showed this but the team as well. The deep shag carpet TFC played on would have looked better in a 70's porno than a soccer pitch and it showed in how the ball was played but after a few misques the team adapted and came through.
Why can't we do this in regular season?
Historic win (or aggregate) for TFC now it's off to the GROUP STAGES!

I would have agreed with you based on the information I had prior to the match, but the sad thing is that there were no yellow cards given out for harsh tackles. For a ref that was supposedly card happy, it's shocking that the two yellows given out were for dissent (Peterson's hissy fit) and the delay of game (for Frei "taking too long on a goal kick"). I'm surprised JDG didn't get one for that tackle semi from behind where he got all shin, and no ball.

I thought that this was going to hurt after the first 6 minutes of the game. I don't know what Preki was thinking starting Henry, but that clearly was a fail. That said, at least he recognized the mistake early and brought in Santos at the 30 minute mark.

The good:

Santos holding the ball up and finding the open man 95% of the time (even if it was a 50 yard back pass).
DeRo's goal was a beauty set up from Santos.
DeRo always brings it in big games.
Barrett's goal was great, the old Barrett would have flubbed that chance.
Frei solid in goal as usual.

The bad:

Guevara scored two goals against us.
I don't think we blocked a single cross into the box from either side, unless it was Attakora doing it. Both the fullbacks and when Cann moved over to cover were atrocious when it came to blocking crosses.
The diving wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it still occurred several times, Peterson's phantom foul being one, and there were several times where the Motagua players would roll around grabbing some part of their body that had no contact with.

The ugly:

The first 6 minutes.
The amount of extra space Motagua were given on both free throws and free kicks. There were several times where the ball was booted half into their end before it went out, and they threw it in from half.

Couple extra comments:

Why can't we teach our ball boys to do what Motagua's did? Late in the game, every time the ball went out a new ball was available immediately (even before the ball was actually out a couple of times). Frei's yellow was a direct result of this example. Every time Motagua could get an advantage the ball boys gave it to them, and every time TFC could, they didn't.

For those of you that say DeRo's goal was the one that clinched it, you are right, BUT I firmly believe that without Barrett's goal, Motagua would have gotten a third to clinch it. Barrett's goal was by far the more important one, even though based on the number it meant nothing.

I agree with this seeing as how Gargan (I believe) was carded for arguing he never touched the diving Montaguan..which he didn't.
I think of defense did a pretty good job at not letting emotions get the best of them and keeping their distance and avoiding contact. This is very difficult for defense to do.

It was Peterson, and he threw a HUGE hissy fit, and definitely deserved to be carded since he kept going on about it.

I mean, forget the advantage part that the Montagua ballboys enabled their team to play - but a developing player, watching pros from that vanatage point, they can learn alot...

So you have a double-bonus...

Brining in a youth club every game is useless (unless they're paying & MLSE is taking the $$$ in which wouldn't completely suprise me)...

The junior academy guys should be out there - get a taste for 20,000 fans around you as they watch/study the match, and if they toss the ball in super-quick when we're down a goal, hey that's just a nice bonus...

A comment on the starting lineup.

Let's take a look at the subs available on the bench: Conway, Hscanovic, Usanov, Peterson, White, Mista, Santos. It's possible (and wouldn't overly surprise me) if Santos said "I can give you 65 minutes at most", and Preki had the choice of starting him, and then bringing someone on at the 65 minute, or starting someone else and bringing in Santos to play the rest of the game. I don't know about anyone else, but Santos ability to hold the ball up at the end of the game was crucial.

As for picking Henry over say Usanov, you have to look at the situation. We've got a hostile crowd and a ref that's supposedly card happy, with a central american team that is generally fond of diving. Usanov would have definitely been over eager, and I'm betting he would have gotten an early yellow, which makes him basically ineffective since he can't be as hard in his tackling, or even worse a red card.

Now, the other choice I guess was starting White, Mista, or Peterson and having DeRo in the midfield. I'm betting neither Peterson nor Mista had more than 45 minutes in them, and I wouldn't want White on the pitch for such an important game.

I'm not defending the choice, but given some possible scenarios, I don't know that there were many other options, especially with a bunch of injuries to our squad (Gomez, Harden, Sanyang, Saric all out, don't know what was up with Gala).

I thought about this exact same thing during the game. Man, those kids knew what they were doing and gave Motagua a big advantage. Caught TFC flat footed a couple of times and got scoring chance out of it.

I bet you the players were talking about this after the game.

Can the FO look into setting this up for Champions league round as a test? Perhaps something if and when the team also makes the MLS playoffs.

Roogsy you don't mind if I make this my signature.:)

However, rotation in MLS is a very important part of the game.Because of small rosters and so many games combined, keeping the guys fresh over the long period of time might cost a team few points here and there or screw up the chemistry of the team from time to time, but as the season progresses teams /coaches who are able to manage this properly will go deep into a post season.

My thoughts are that despite my gushy thoughts we didnt deserve to win at all, our team defense has been horribly porous the past few matches, Frei will/should be on an EPL team next summer, Santos is looking like a good pick up, Attakora if his development doesnt stall will be in Europe in two seasons, DeRo needs to play centrally and yah I am stoked for CL group stages.

Also, I was impressed that Preki had faith in Henry to play him. I am ok with the test and good for Preki to make the move to sub when he did. You have to put kids into the fire to see how they react, especially when the other option while good in a physical MLS would be a foul hazard. Henry had some omg moments and obviously CL is a lot different that the CSL (why people on are on about a Canadian league is beyond me) but it bodes well for the kid. Out of his depth now, but I think he will be on the team next season and a starter in two. I am sure it was a good experience for him.

Nonetheless, our lack of wide talent is obvious. Usanoc and Hscanovics really need to develop themselves to be a starter. Gargan works hard but lacks pace and gets burned. Every game teams run down the wings on us and we never generate any attacks wide. If we do not get some wingers on this team we will have trouble as it is obvious that aside from the hands of Frei, the heads and Cann or Attakora, we do not defend or attack wide.
