FC Edmonton up and running. This year they are playing friendlies, preparing for D2 action next year:

EDMONTON - Michael Cox scored the first-ever goal for FC Edmonton on Wednesday as the team marked its professional soccer debut with a 3-0 exhibition victory over the Montreal Impact.

Cox etched his name in the club's history book with his first of two on the night when he snuck a ball under Montreal 'keeper Andrei Badescu in the 17th minute for Edmonton, which is set to join the North American Soccer League in 2011.

Edmonton went up 2-0 in the 60th minute on a header from former Vancouver Whitecap Paul Hamilton off a corner by Chris Lemire.

Facing an Impact team comprised almost entirely of backups, the new squad added a third goal just four minutes later when Sam Lam sent Cox through on a breakaway and he chipped his second of the game past Badescu.

For a team that won't play its first official game in the NASL until next year, Edmonton has put together an exceptionally busy summer schedule. The team will play eight games in Edmonton this summer, including three against teams from outside North America.
Nice, their first game is a victory against the Limp Act (reserves).

Would make sense for 2012 to even out the conferences

Not saying it is going to happen, just saying its a good idea

There's no way detroit could support a mls team. I just don't see it.

It would be another suburban team.

They would probably put the team out in like Livonia or something.

Yeah, what happened to that Canadian guy who bought Pontiac Silverdome?

Certainly the fan base for a Detroit team would come from the suburbs - just like the fan bases for the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings (and Windsor in that case) and Pistons.

Detroit may be going through tough times, but Detroit suburbs are some of the nicest places in the US.

Is there much soccer at Michigan or Michiigan State or any of the the schools? What about high school?

Detroit would be great - it would be a whole new bunch of people to hate Colombus :D

I feel the same way.

And by the way folks, the Silverdome would be a very oppressive facility on a hot summers day. I saw Brazil v Sweden in there at USA 94 on a fairly warm day and it was tepid and humid inside. Not an ejoyable place to be at all.

if detroit has problems selling out red wing games, i don't know how large a market they would have for football.
