NEWSFLASH: The Vancouver Whitecaps are unveiling their new MLS name, logo and colours on the morning of June 8.

To celebrate this historic day, the Southsiders will be hosting a very special event later in the evening at one of our partner venues in downtown Vancouver. There will be guest speakers, video presentations, a ton of prizes and much, much more!

It will also be the FIRST EVER opportunity to purchase Vancouver MLS scarves, t-shirts and other merchandise featuring the club's new logo!

Two pairs of tickets will also be up for grabs to take part in a special Whitecaps bus trip to Seattle to watch the Sounders play DC United at Qwest Field on June 10.

Stay tuned later today for additional info... but as for right now.... SAVE THE DATE!

New name? Any guesses? Hope they haven't gone for another lame natural-phenomenon based name like Vancouver Thunder or Vancouver Lightning or Vancouver Rainstorm or Vancouver Sewer Overflow.

They'll stick with Whitecaps, just like the Sounders got their old name.

besides, the Whitecaps have a huge history from back in the NASL and earlier, so changing it now would probably be the dumbest possible move they could make.

I hope they keep it.

It kinda has that "old-timey" ring to it like "Red Sox".
Except they're not talking about the "caps" on their heads... hahaha.

I can sorta see them putting up Vancouver City FC as the official name and encouraging the use of Van City as the shortened nickname.

The club has gone on record several times saying they won't be changing the name, so I guess that's that, though. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised there are making any changes at all. The current Whitecaps logo is fairly modern, and what else can you do with a blue and white wave design?

the crest probably wont have anything to do with a blue wave. Just like Seattle kept there name but changed there crest. It will most likely get away from the USA/Canada crests style and go more British style or something. Which is the trend in MLS to convience fans its not an amature looking team.

Of course there will be those football purests who hate the logo and will start a 'Dope Must Go' campaign.
I could see this club being the first environmentally friendly club in MLS. Everything from the kits to the supporters scarves would be made from hemp.
I know who would make for a good fit for their club in the supplemental draft:

What I think is they will keep the name but just change it a bit like:
Vancouver FC Whitecaps
Vancouver White Caps FC
Whitecaps of Vancouver FC
V. Whitecaps SC

There was some speculation that it will be British Columbia FC Whitecaps or BCFC. I don't think it's true but it would be interesting.

On the Whitecaps boards they were speculating this as well but the countdown clock ends at Midnight of the 8th so they believe it has to do more with a new type of communication device rather than the kit sponsor.

Yes Vancouver Whiecaps are joing MLS. The owners will be the same and the organization will all be the same pretty much...Vancouver will most likely spend more money on players next season tho for MLS so they will deffinitly get some new players. Probably a hand full of current Vancouver Whitecap players will remain on the team tho next year.

THe Whitecaps wil move from there current stadium that only fits about 6,000 fans and will move to play at BC Place next year that has 60,000 seats. However they will probably follow the Seattle Sounders model (they play in the Seattle Seahawks Stadium 68,000, but only sell 36,000 for Seattle Sounder games).

The only other thing that may change is the Whitecaps name, crest, or jersey, or maybe all. My guess is tho they will do what Seattle Sounders did. WHen they moved from USL to MLS they kept the name Seattle Sounders but added FC to the end of it, and chaged the crest and the jersey colours and the sponsors.

^They will only be playing at Empire from the beginning of the MLS season until the summer then move into BC Place. The stadium will not be completely finished until the Fall though but will be open for business for sports, etc.

WHen they moved from USL to MLS they kept the name Seattle Sounders but added FC to the end of it, and chaged the crest and the jersey colours and the sponsors.

The club's current name has already been Whitecaps FC for 8 years.

They said in their news release that they will be launching their brand including name, crest, and colours. With the name, all that could mean is the franchise's name right now technically is Vancouver MLS, so anything other than that will obviously be new.
Rumours have said with the crest that it will be something that is completely different from anything else the club has used before.
As for the colours, another rumour says navy blue and white are two of the shades being used.

This is a situation where it's better not to have any history. they were stuck with a team name, "Whitecaps" that has enough history to keep but you can't do much with it.

As much as some people like it, we're lucky we're not stuck with Toronto Blizzard FC and a lame logo.

Really? Do people here honestly think that it "fucking sucks" or is it just because they hate Vancouver so much? I'm trying to see why the logo is so horrible but I'm sorry to say I'm not seeing it. It is not the best logo in the world but it seems perfectly fine.

It is not the best logo in the world but it seems perfectly fine.

I don't see too many people saying it fucking sucks. But when you have a year to plan a massive brand launch for a major league team, you should be striving for more than that.

I think it's boring, lacks inspiration, the fonts could be better. For a USL team or something, it's fine. Better than what they had... but I think it could be a lot better.

I don't think that lettering is going to look very good on a crest, for example. It needed better integration into the mountains. I also think it's too "long" from top to bottom with a lot of space in the top part of the mountain.

But at least it's not like the Columbus Crew logo... bhahahha,.

Although it's kind of funny that the basic idea of the design is the glassy reflection of mountains on water - very Vancouver, sure, but no "whitecaps" to be seen!

Van fans from Big Soccer:

"Sorry, I really don't like this. I'm trying my best but I'd be lying. This was the time to really come out with a good brand and they didn't pull it off in my opinion. A standard shield or circular logo would have been much better. Alas, it is what it is though and at least the name stayed."

"ok. a few things.

A. it looks waaaaaay better when the dark blue colour is part of the logo, ie on a white background, and not lost by being on an identically coloured dark blue background.

B. the font is a very clean and crisp look. a vast improvement over the current font.

C. if you are going to "change" the whitecaps iconography from "waves" to "mountains" (both of which apply to the term "whitecaps") then you HAVE to put an actual white cap on at least the central mountain. i mean that is just basic. not too much but perhaps an cm down solid white to the tip. just the central mountain.

D. i still think that part of the issue is that the exact symetry of the "reflection" throws the thing off a bit and makes it look "boring". not sure what could have been done. the more you see the bottom is light blue the better it makes it. perhaps the bottom colour needed to be a bit "brighter" to stand out more. still light/sky blue but perhaps a bit more vibrant or vivid or rich.

E. if they can tie in an argyle pattern to their unis and other gear, like celtic being known for their hoops or czech republic being known for their chequerboard pattern this might make the whole thing better. "

"I actually like it.

It is different, and stands out from the rest of the league's badges/crests. It takes on a shape/pattern not already done. The slight palatte change is much better in my opinion."

"I think the interlocking diamonds look is a neat idea, and the font is good. The colours are good, and most importantly they kept the name.

I guess I am disappointed they didn't go either darker or lighter with the main blue, and that the logo is not shield style, and that the logo is quite dull. Just a bit more punch would have been nice, but again, interlocking diamonds is neat iconography.

My buddy Rob was walking by my dorm so I had him look at it (he knows nothing about the Whitecaps or soccer) and he thought it looked great. So I guess if it appeals to non-soccer fans, that's helpful.

Two big plusses:

1. IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE!

2. IT IS VERY UNIQUE and will help the Caps make an international brand. "

The new BC Place stadium will be our home starting in summer 2011, as soon as all renovations and installation of the retractable roof are complete.

With the completed renovations, BC Place will allow our fans to experience soccer the way it was meant to be experienced - in an intimate atmosphere, with seating close to the pitch, and an open-air roof for balmy summer nights.

Seating capacity for soccer matches will be approximately 20,000. http://www.vancouvermls2011.com/facilities/stadia.aspx

I agree. They had sooooo much hitstory to draw from. Elements from the 86ers, Royals, NASL Caps could have been involved.
It looks like there was an argument over some of the design elements and a compromise was done to make everyone happy.
The basic rule for design I have is if I can do it...it's not a good design. I could have done this.
It's like they took the German Football Federation logo:

They actually went through quite a process to get the logo:

It was a yearlong process involving the team's ad agency, as well as input from fans, staff and partners. President Bob Lenarduzzi said owner Greg Kerfoot was extremely hands on, right down to the shade of blue."We've tried to combine the very best of what this city brings to the people and I think the logo represents that very nicely," Whitecaps CEO Paul Barber said.

From what I understand, the press conference is scheduled for 1:00 Eastern Time. Don't know if it's being streamed or not. I hope it is.

No 3rd kit, but that may come later next year for the NCC like the Imps did.

Nice that the main kit is all white. But I'd really would have liked it if there was a blue horizontal bar across it. Don't know what to think about the lines across the jersey.

Bet Martin Nash wishes he's wearing that next season.

^ Nice sponsor.

So apparently BMO wanted to be the shirt sponsor as well?
That would be silly having both Toronto and Vancouver with BMO on their shirts.

Glad common sense prevailed.

would have been almost as dirty as Rangers and Celtic sharing sponsors.

Didn't McEwan's once sponsor them both at the same time?

don't think they did.

but now Wellpark Brewery just signed on as sponsor for both (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/scot_prem/8495426.stm). They'll both have Tennant's on their kit. Before that Carling (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/scot_prem/4703197.stm) and before that NTL (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/sport/football/scottish_league/285334.stm)

The design team has done a good job of re-branding the club.

Kara, I love you!

Even though you're the same height as me.

The kind of dumb thing is that they only technically have to wear their 'away' kit in two places -- L.A. and NY. Maybe Dallas and Chivas. Kind of like the Galaxy's and Red Bulls' blue kits -- we hardly ever see them.

I still think the lettering in the logo should've been a colour other than white to provide contrast (like the same green used in the old logo, or something). But overall it's pretty decent.

It'll suck if Martin Nash is cut from the roster once they move to MLS.

Pretty sure they'll keep him around, I predict for 1 to 2 seasons before he is gone. With Steve having a part in the club, with him as the current captain, and with a recognizable name ("that's Steve's brother") he'll be the face of the club for the start.

Love the whites, although Chelsea anyone? The blues look like the Italy jersey from 1994. The new logo... not a fan.

Good for Canada getting another top-tier team. The more the better.

I like the blue kit, especially the way the mountains/water from the crest are ghosted onto the background of the jersey. I can kind of see an argyle pattern going on here. It doesn't hurt that Kara Lang is showcasing the jersey as well.

The Logo:

http://mlsinsiderblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/LilCaps2.jpg

The Logo itself is nice and crisp. It's very modern and has a clean, professional look to it. It's as close to perfect as you can get - if you were an accounting firm, publishing house, or outdoor clothing manufacturer.

As it is, it's NOT a good soccer crest.

As strange as it may sound, throwing in a soccer ball or maple leaf would actually improve the logo, in my opinion. The overall design IS really well done and clever (ie: the reflection of mountains on water) and would have looked great as part of a larger design, but is oversimplified and lacks any sense of excitement and motion by itself. Again, it's a great looking corporate logo, but not something I'd ever want to see on a football shirt. I commend the Whitecaps for thinking outside the box and dropping a traditional shield design in favour for something new and different, but the fact remains that this crest is far more suited to be displayed in the boardroom of a bank or investment company rather than a pro football club's locker room.

The Shirts:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/4688080697_602e51853f_o.jpg

Phenomenal. A lot of MLS clubs could certainly learn a thing or two from Vancouver when it comes to kit design. The cleanness of the home kit makes me wish Toronto was playing in white away tops since Day 1. Well, actually I already have, but it reinforces my position on that. Blue pinstripes are very well done and go hand-in-hand with the addidas three-stripe down the sleeve. I'm not as much a fan of the ghost gradiant logo design on the away top, though. It's not terrible by any stretch, but I would have preferred a straight-blue field with white pinstripes - pretty much a reversal of the home top. Now that I've seen it on another kit, I'm a huge fan of the Canadian flag on the sleeves. Wasn't sure if it would have looked right on Vancouver but it totally does.

Agreed with basically all your points Cash.

The logo looks more like a secondary logo. Like something the Canucks would wear on their shoulder (if the Canucks ever had a competent design team). When I saw it I figured that was what it was, and that the primary logo would appear when I scrolled down.

Its not bad though. I will take too plain over too cluttered.

And ya, the kits are phenomenal. Especially the white.

jerseys unveiled, different pic. hate the bottom of the white one and how the lines dont go all the way down, also hate the blue ones. that colours in use by a lot of the teams in the league already. what was the point of adding the light blue to the logo if they werent going to make use of it at all? also don't like the asymmetrical adidas logo and crest, they couldve lined them up.

Every team comes up with their novelty 3rd jersey sometime, you probably just figured out what colour it'll be!

Totally agree about the weird lines on the white shirts. Maybe it'll grow on me but not yet...

As an aside, I think we need more teams putting crest over the centre of the shirt like what Chivas did here:

http://www.shop2wear.com/images/Soccer/Chivas-Soccer-Jersey-U0601-T-CHI-602.jpg

And you know what else would be cool? A hockey-style jersey with a HUGE crest on the front just like the NHL. Sure, it'd only be a novelty item for the fans to buy, but I'd definitely pick one up for TFC.

Whitecaps partnership with Bell worth more than US$4 million annually

Executives at Bell Canada and the Vancouver Whitecaps refuse to say how much the Canadian telecom will pay to be the founding sponsor of the Major League Soccer team, which will play its inaugural season in 2011.

“It will be more valuable for the Whitecaps and Bell than any deal that exists in the league today,” said Wade Oosterman, who is Bell’s Vancouver-born president of mobility and its chief brand officer.

I wonder what the secondary and alternate logos will incorporate. All MLS clubs have alternate logos for adverts and displays so I can't wait to see how they use some of the logos elements in other ways.
