End of 2nd half was awful, but TFC still won!

Frei man of the match! Cann is a monster back there. I can't believe how much impact he's making for TFC.

In end of the day, 3 big points on the road.

The positive of the last 30 minutes is, as bad as TFC was, last year they would have coughed up the tying goal.

This year, they're bending but not breaking...

But oh... that bending can be painful to watch. LOL

Frei is impressing more and more. Garcia played surprisingly well in the first half, but disappeared late. Maybe because Wandolowski (sp) seems to have attacked on the right more in the second half. Even with the goal, I thought Barrett had his worst game of the season.

3 points on the road - I'll take it :)

Garcia, playing less, seems to be doing it. He is more rested and makes less mental mistakes when he does play.

Positive - the entire backline (minus garcia who left too much space on his flank) and Frei.

Negative - careless passes and holding onto the ball too long killed various chances. Forwards and mids just have to be better moving the ball around.

Great result all said and done. Preki seems to know what strings to pull and how to manage the rotation.

HUGE victory.

To be honest, we were pretty fortunate; San Jose had a LOT of very good chances, and, in fact, they could very well have won. You can really see the league's parity in action tonight.

I'd like to see the regulars enjoy a week off - don't worry about Vancouver!

As the broadcast pointed out, we now have a goal differential of +1, our first road victory, second place in the East. This game could easily have gone the other way, but I'll happily take the three points.

Three Big items come out of the first 1/3 of the season.
one we are actually ahead on points from last year (and will stay so if we can get a result at home)
We have won more games then we have lost in the first third.
And we have a positive Goal Differential. (over the last 6 games it's +7, 10 of the 14 goals we've conceded this year were in the first 4 games.)

These are some major changes from passed MLS seasons

Lots to look forward too.. particularly with 4 home MLS matches in a row. :)

As much as Sanyang sucked out loud in the 1st half I thought he actually had a decent 2nd half after JDG came on and became the General in the center of the park. In the 2nd Half Sanyang only had to be a destroyer and he does that so well that he seemed to be a completely different player.

What disgusted me was TFC's gutless performance in the final 10-15 minutes. At that point they seemed too content to let San Jose attack wave after wave. Their idea of defence seemed to be "kick the ball really far". They could've handcuffed San Jose quite a bit by using their 5 midfielders to move the ball out of their end with some purpose. JDG seemed to be the only Middie interested in retaining possession, everyone else was just hoofing it.

Loved the play of Adrian tonight, he has brought so much stability to the Reds since his arrival. He is the rock on the back four TFC has so longed for.

His pressence has also helped Nana become a better player, two good players in the middle.

Let's lay off Gerry, he has a job to do, but I will say no one touches Nigel, but Luke is pretty close.

Love the authenticity that is brought to the broadcast with their British acents.

Those last 30 mintues were rough. If San Jose had some better finishing we'd been fucked.

But a win is a win!
I feel the same way. How does Ryan Johnson not get a touch on Chris Wondolowski's pass through the box? I was most impressed with Stefan Frei and Jacob Peterson for TFC. Frei stepped up his game and saved us at times. Good positioning, blocked shots, and a couple of good punches. I liked what I have seen from Peterson in these last two games. He did a good job with set pieces and he wasn't dogging it off the ball either. Tracked back well, pressured San Jose players when they had the ball, provided support and even blocked a shot.

San Jose's goal off the corner wasn't a great moment. Corrales followed whoever Cann was having a difficult time keeping under wraps right into open space and onto the ball. Too many TFC players looking around at each other wondering what just happened after the goal.

Some positives and negatives, but you have to be happy with the three points.

Keystone FC
05-29-2010, 11:57 PM
It was a good win but still there needs to be some adjustments to be made if we are going to make the playoffs.
First off, I will be so happy once San Jose gets their own stadium. Barretts goal was so aided by the wind that got under Freis kick and the sun in the goalies eyes really helped out. But hey, we have endured 4 years of that type of stuff happening to us so it's everyone elses turn.
Our defense played extremely well but still let San Jose get off some dangerous shots. Thank God it was Freis Day.
***Banner Team***
Thank God It's Freis Day! Just a suggestion
****************
Our defense allowed 16 shots and 7 of them on goal while we had 9 shots with 3 on goal.
The good news with that is the 3 on goal...were in the goal.
The thing that I came away with was a sense that the players are starting to play as a unit. They know were their players are and are able to get the ball to them (within reason).
The other thing was our offense played some very tuff defense. Both Barrett and JDG got the ball away from SJ backline a few times and created some chances. It's bold and risky but when we have players who can do it it makes for a frustrated oppositional backline and gives our guys in the back a chance to catch their breathe.
Overall a good win going into Wednesday and an upcoming break for the Cup.

The last 15 minutes was a massive brainfart that could have been avoided -- before the Corrales goal we had SJ dropping back, and we had to press our advantage which we failed to do.

And Adrian Cann has been an absolute beast with Nana.

Yes, Nana Cann! :D

liked what i saw for the most part. cant expect too much precision and execution when playing on the road. good defense even with the shutout streak broken. clear difference not just in talent but attitude / mentality with DeRo and JDG on the pitch.

Sanyang and Garcia were a little disappointing. Garcia's positioning wasn't that great, but glad to see him not fucking things up completely. I would like to see Garcia as the starting CB on Wednesday.

Preki's style is working, Barrett (a man who could have easily have killed before) is blossoming into a fuckin' amazing player and DeRo and JDG are being realeased later in the game with fire in their souls... man! I love this!

Frei was the difference, I thought no one really stood out not too many errors, Garcia had a good first half but lost his man a bit on the 2nd, Sanyang really defends well but gives the ball away far too easily at times. After the SJ goal they seemed to wake up but the amazing thing is that TFC did not panic they just cleared it away, a little luck tonight, good game and hurray first road win.

Just got back from the bar after watching the game here in San Jose. Tailgated with the San Jose Ultras before the game. They're a good bunch of guys who kept up the chanting all through the game despite being soundly beaten. Also met Chad Barrett's mum who was down from Oregon for the game and was at the tailgate. She wears a TFC shirt with "Mama Barrett" on the back.

The San Jose fans in the bar after the game were particularly impressed with Stefan and Adrian Cann. They said it was the best defense they had come up against this year.

QFT.

I would add that Frei was also a difference-maker there, saving several chances or diverting some pretty decent crosses.

But if San Jose had a quality finisher up top, I think they could have tied this game at the very least.

And in other good news...Columbus lost to LA. Sweet.

A good road win, although I'm sure Preki will be all over them because they didn't show the "right mentality" in the last 20 minutes.

The way league results went, the boys are right on track for the playoffs. If Preki can keep them with a winning mentality, I'm confident that they'll probably be in.

just want to point out that tactical use of longball (ie, see gap in opposition defence with a player making a run, or opposition pushed up defenders too much) have led to couple of TFC goals, incl DeRo's 1st goal. though Barrett's goal was a fluke of a long ball and SJ defender gaffed at it

I was at Wendel Clark's Sports Bar and Grill last night for a friend's birthday and the manager was nice enough to put the TFC game on one of the TV's amidst a dozen others showing the Stanley Cup finals, Lakers-Suns, and UFC. It was hilarious when TFC scored their goals and I seemed to be the only guy in the entire place screaming.

It was an exciting match from start to finish. Preki's starting lineup was questionable considering the previous failed experiment at RSL but last night his strategy paid dividends. I think I lost a couple of years off my life span during the last 15 minutes but overall TFC defended admirably against a San Jose squad that was playing excellent football, particularly at home.

Overall, a well executed, opportunistic effort on the road. Well done Reds!

Thanks to Gerry Dobson, we now also know that JDG is one behind Buddle for the goal-scoring lead in the league.....

Not the prettiest match again, but a very good away performance. Defence was solid, with Frei really good when he needed to be.

A couple of lucky goals, but the second goal was an exquisite finish from De Ro. I didn't really notice it live as it looked so casual, but on replays, it was a great finish, he made it look a lot easier then it actually was.

if he was getting a yellow, he should've done an actual 21 gun salute, instead of the 2 gun salute

Exactly. So instead of 7th, we could reach as high as 3rd (doubt we'll pass LA or Columbus)

At this rate, we've got to be careful about our expectations -- but we can aim a little higher.

And besides, finishing above Cowlumpass...wouldn't THAT be a hair in Bill Archer's soup! :scarf:

He might invoke them, but at the end of the day, he's still a cut above them.

At least he knows the game, I'll give him that...the articulation though, needs a lot of work, that's for sure.

I hear you, cant blame people for being a bit conservative. But I'm firmly in the belief that the playoffs will happen, its just a matter of where we'll place. I think the top half of the playoff table is quite possible.

43 points ... 96% likelihood of playoffs
42 ... 88%
41 ... 73.5%
40 ... 53%
39 ... 31%
38 ... 14%

42 points has to be our threshold to get into the playoffs. We have 16 points now. If we can earn 26 more points this season (out of the 20 remaining, 11 at home), we'll earn that playoff spot.

We still have to play Philly, KC and DC on the road, the three worst teams in the league, and those are definitely winnable games.

42 is probably the magic number to qualify. People were saying it was skewed last year because of New York's shitastic season last year, which in turn gave other teams a lot of extra points, but I think it will remain the same because D.C. United's going through the same thing.

Aim for 42!

Last night was very encouraging indeed. However, i'm not getting carried away regarding the playoffs as it's not yet June.

Preki is working this team hard (ie: they may not even be getting a day off). At the moment we're seeing the dividends but I'm concerned that, given the number of games we have in July, the players could start dropping like flies due to injuries and then just you watch the wheels come off.

I'm sure Preki is well aware of that possibility, and the two week break for the World Cup is probably THE chance to heal up and rest up -- it's going to be a busy July as you said:

1 Jul: Houston (the return of Adrian Serioux)
10 Jul: Colorado (the return match)
17 Jul: @ Philly (this time, at their house)
21 Jul: Bolton friendly
24 Jul: Dallas
27-29 Jul: Motagua (CCL Prelim 1st leg)
31 Jul: @ Kansas City

There is a 9 day window between Houston and Colorado -- that would be another chance to rest. After that, depending on results...

Injury problems could very well become a factor as the season wears on but I definitely have more faith in this team to stay the course than those of years past. Under Preki's guidance TFC has already demonstrated that they can be be a competent, cohesive, defensive unit that is capable of earning a result in almost every match regardless of the players on the pitch. The difference is that with a healthy squad, we have gamebreakers like DeRo and Barrett that provide a realistic opportunity to win on any given day. Other than losing Frei for an extended period of time, TFC should be able to withstand the vigors of the schedule this year and make the playoffs...

:jester: a minute TFC win away from home and we complain!Except for the last 20mins we were the better team, the only reason that S.J got in the game was our only weak spot, Garcia.Frei again was outstanding,Barrett could end up with 12-15 goals this year,Dero could be 15- 20.If we did not give the ball away in mid field so often we would be scary. Many reasons to be optomistic for the play-offs this year, the main one being Preki.:drinking: enjoy

Definitely. I did an optimistic analysis of the remaining fixtures and I think we could get 50, but that was optimistic.

Even 42 is going to be a challenge. We're not out of the water but we're definitely on the right path.

Let's hope. Like someone said in the other Preki thread, maybe he has learned his lesson. Because apparently this possibility is not something he was aware of at Chivas. It's one of the things that helped run him out of town. We don't want the same here so hopefully adjustments are made accordingly.

Here is a link to a few photos from the game last Saturday.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36051316@N06/sets/72157624057904419

I have to admit, we were treated very well by the 'Quakes' fans. They invited us to their tailgate, gave us beer and food and didn't complain when we celebrated the 3 goals. We were also given complimentary tickets for great seats. The only other TFC fans at the tailgate were Chad Barrett's mum and dad. Chad's mum wears a TFC shirt with 'Mama Barrett' on the back!

The Ultras fans were a relatively small group but made a lot of noise from the first whistle to about 10 minutes after the game finished, despite the result. They're struggling to get the owners to commit to a new stadium so I wish them luck on that, they deserve better than what they have now.

Oh, and they still love DeRo.
