so this game has meaning.

VAN needs to win.

if they do then we face them at BMO where they need to win to win the cup.

AND if VAN loses or ties....then we are the winners:scarf:

i would still prefer this and rest some of our guys for next weeks game

thoughts?

Montreal will be sending out the scrubs (though probably a stronger side than last year).

That being said, with Vancouver's inability to score, a 0-0 draw is possible.

I fully expect a Vancouver win. But the Montreal staff are in a weird spot: Play too many reserve and bench players and they'll be criticized for rolling over and altering the outcome of the tournament. Play too many first XI players and Vancouver will be all up in arms for perceived unfairness.

I'd like to think Vancouver may very well not win the game, but when has it ever been made easy for TFC?

deltox

how can playing your best team be perceived unfairness?

also isnt there a mandate now that says you have to make an effort to play your best available players after what happened last yr?

Really hope Montreal gets a result of some kind.

23 years now i've been a serious football fan, and there's only been 3 trophies won, and it's always gone down to the last game.

Forgetting all the failures, the mediocrity and the many close calls, even when it goes right, it's still always gone wrong first.

1990, need a draw in the penultimate game to clinch the Vauxhall Conference title, lose to a last minute goal, so have to endure a nervy last game, before wrapping it up with an 87th minute winner.

1991, need a win in the penultimate game to win promotion, lose, so another nervy last game before clinching the Division 4 title.

2009, need a draw against vancouver to clinch the Canadian championship, you all know what happened there.

Once, just once in my life, i want to be able to enjoy the last game, and obnoxiously revel in our superiority without having to wait to see how the game goes first.

Just once. please.

Just in relation to Montreal putting out many reserve players against TFC last year compared to if Vancouver get mainly first XI guys this time around. There are always going to be conspiracy theorists.

There's a "gentlemens agreement" to not roll over like Montreal did last year. That said, if Montreal does something similar this year you won't hear 1/10th of the whining we did last season. If Vancouver wins in whatever fashion, all that does is make the tourny more interesting and a lot less anti-climatic when they come to bmo. Coupled with the fact that those minor league clubs are understandably underdogs, everybody and their dog who aren't TFC affiliated are angling for a Whitecaps win.

It would be nice if Montreal tried and got a result so we could rest some guys, but we`re talking about the Impact here (the most minor league outfit of all the minor league outfits, the midget who gets beat up by all the other midgets).

Like Duane Rollins, I actually would love to see a B-team Montreal squad get a result... that would be hilarious.

I don't have time to look it up to confirm, but from what I remember, Vancouver has not beaten Montreal since May 20, 2009 (NCC). Am i correct?

Impact are 0-2-1. For Dos Santos' own sake, I would expect that he would play for the win. He's looking for a new job somewhere some time soon (a rumour I heard) and it'll be hard to get that with a winless domestic cup squad.

I'm going to call Impact 1-0.

I think they dislike Vancouver more than us. I think Montreal plays this game to win it.

I don't have a lot of confidence though, considering they have nothing to play for except pride.

They may play a "B" team, but it will certainly be stronger than last year and the score will not be 6-1. The club seriously strained their relationship with the Montreal Ultras last year by playing such a weak side against Toronto, and they need that bunch on board for when the team moves to MLS. A tie is certainly a possibility, although a narrow Vancouver win is the most likely result.

There's an interesting piece done by a Montreal blogger who echoes what I said yesterday: one of the three teams will come away pissed off tomorrow.

http://www.soccermontreal.net/2010/05/lose-lose-situation.html

Montreal plays reserves and loses = TFC angry, Montreal angry
Montreal plays reserves and wins/ties = Vancouver angry (and shamed), Montreal angry
Montreal plays first XI and wins/ties = Vancouver angry, Montreal still angry
Montreal plays first XI and loses = Montreal remains angry, TFC facepalms because the Impact is a useless team

I think that MTL owes their fans a chance to beat their cross country rivals, especially I think it would be great if they gave Van a big fuck you and beat them. It would really foster a bigger rivalry between the two squads.

That said, I think Haber scores 2, leading Van to a 3-1 win.

ya, if i'm a montreal fan I want to add insult to injury... I wouldn't care about last year and giving vancouver a gift to spite evil Toronto... even if Vancouver wins, Toronto can still tie or beat Vancouver and win the NCC anyways. It's not the final game of the tourney like last year... Montreal can't force Toronto out by giving up. Now, they can make it a bit harder for TFC. But if Vanny wins and TFC ties the next game, Montreal watches TFC hoist the cup anyways.

I'm still not sure Vancouver can take advantage of a weaker Montreal lineup (if that's what Montreal puts out there). Even at home against TFC's tired bunch, they had couldn't put away the chances they had. If they had Sebrango or Gbeke up front (veteran) I could see them punching in at least 1 or 2. We'll see.

Jay Nolly. I would expect a player like Randy Edwini-Bonsu to be on the team too. I would expect either Dan Pelc or Simon Thomas to make the team so they don't have to use an international or U.S. spot on their back-up keeper.

I would also expect a number of the young, Canadians to be on the team due to the premium there would be on Canadian players. So player like Ethan Gage, Philippe Davies and Alex Sements would probaly also stand a good chance.

Couldn't they do like three fleur-de-lys instead? I'm sure MLS FO will catch onto the stars inside the crest...
I could see a Fleur-de-Lys in the crest. As for the stars, they could say it's for the history of the leagues the Impact have been in: USL, NASL, MLS.

They are just hacking it out there. No real teamwork for either team, pathetic!

I've never seen a team that couldn't win a cup play so hard for pride.

Mind you, they hate Vancouver even more than Toronto.

Oops...some teams actually do have stars in their logos, but none more than one.

Houston/Dallas - Texas flag star
DC/New England/Philly - American flag/revolution themed/etc.

Montreal and Quebec does not have stars on their flags. So I don't see any valid justification that the Limpact could use.

No MLS team uses stars to recognize that -- as much as that would be a sentimentality argument, I doubt that would fly with the Don.

I think there's been some interesting play tonight. There isn't the constant athletic pressing you see in MLS, so they can string a few passes together.

I guess it will come down to MLS creative/marketing department. I wonder if Montreal has any say in what their logo will look like. Seeing as how they will be a franchise of MLS there are certain things that the league dictates. I wonder if the logo will be one of them.

im glad we will get to rest some players but a cup should not be given to a team not playing....when there is 4 teams they should just do a draw and have a semis (2 legs) and a final (either 2 legs or at a location chosen before the start of the tourny)

Well, I wouldn't say it's that bad, but it's certainly not the same quality of MLS anymore.

MLS has really grown in leaps and bounds in just the last few years.

Remember when they made that banner saying we won on the fourth tie breaking criteria...yeah, I do. I also remember that if we hadn't scored as many goals as we did, they'd have won on the same criteria. Pricks.
