Hell hath no fury like Philly phans scorned. I can just imagine the reception he'll get when he plays there for whichever team.

I was checking MLSR (dont hate me...) and some philly fan posted saying that when he goes to PPL park, he should be expecting a battery to the face...

Fucking pathetic.

OR MLSR posted that to encite shit. Really, dude, it's that kind of website.

If Pires came to TFC then i expect he'd end up as another Laurent Robert signing. he was a much, much better player and professional than LR was, btu I just cannot see him being motivated enuogh to make him a lethal addition to TFC at the age of 36, and at his age and in his position, you need to bust your ass to be a star performer.

Henry, well, he could probably win games in MLS with minimal effort and still ook like a world beater, especially at 32. Man, i wish he was coming here instead of going to the Shite Bulls...

I think this proves the point that the destination city is a huge factor in drawing designated players.

Philly isn't the shit hole you think it is. But this just proves that most DP's will be coming here for a vacation more than anything.

Rumour has it that effective immediately, the Philly front office will show a 15 minute video of Columbus to all potential signings.

That's why it's unlikely that a world class striker will come here for his last years, even if MLSE rolls out the bank truck. LA and NY will always have more cachet than Toronto.

The team isn't in Philly... it's in CHESTER... :) which is a total shit hole. Not sure if Pires actually visited the stadium under construction, but I hope he didn't go near this area.... a few blocks away.

“I don’t want to be difficult, but if I’m leaving to take my family far away, I prefer that it’s in a beautiful city.”

HAHAHAHAHAHA! What a slap in the face!! It's not an absolute horrible city, but it does have the fattest people in America (as of 2008 anyways). A French dude would not be at home in Philly.

Well Roberto Bettega and Eusebio didn't have any problems with Toronto.

Besides NYC and LA, what other city is more appealing for world class soccer players than Toronto? Chicago is other city I can think of that might be attractive for world class soccer player to play in than Toronto, but I doubt.

Chicago, maybe DC or Seattle, but neither really compare IMO. Toronto has more appeal than DC, but I'd say in terms of Europeans, they see West Coast and thing warm, east coast = NY and Toronto = Cold.

i always find it funny tho when guys like Henry and Pires talk about playing in New York.... hey guys, technically you wouldn't actually be playing in New York.
You'd be playing in Harrison New Jersey!

It all depends on nationality of player IMO. I am sure Toronto will be more attractive city to play in for Southern or Eastern European players but will have trouble selling Toronto to South American players compare to other MLS cities.

It's not where the games are played, it's where your home is located. Living in NY and commuting to work is still appealing.

until an MLS team is put in New York City for the first time, Thierry Henry and Pires will never play in MLS in New York :)

Toronto has size and wealth going for it.... some cultural events... some celebrity shindigs, etc.
Those things might attract certain players.

But if it's a nice city they are after, I would say Montreal and Vancouver rank above Toronto.
Both cities (once in MLS) should stand as good, or better, chance of signing a decent DP than Toronto.
(assuming they have the dollars to spend)

This is exactly what I was thinking. Once the league is considered more accepted, then it shouldn't matter what city makes offers. Manchester is one of the nastiest cities I've ever been to and they seem to have no problem attracting the top players because they can compete to win the league.

By the way, someone said Vancouver is nicer than Toronto? My ass it is. They are just lucky to have beautiful mountains near their city.
But if you stick beautiful mountains behind some dog shit, it's still dog shit.

^Thats what I'm saying. I doubt the worlds top players move to Manchester and Liverpool just because. Barcelona and Valencia...different story. Must suck to be a Kansas City fan haha.
I'm hoping that having world class facilities will be able to draw some players.

Also did a little research ......Vancouver is ranked #1 in North America and 4th world wide!

Toronto was ranked #15 in the world

Judging by their priorities, they should just move to NYC to brag to their friends and just not play soccer anymore.

This is most surprising, not that he doesn't want to go to Philly, but the fact that he's been so undiplomatic about it. Nine times out of ten, pro athletes are very cautious about saying anything this direct. Reminds me of years ago when Jim McMahon was asked if he would ever consider playing the the CFL, he was less then diplomatic with his answer.

Come on now, let's not go flying off the handle over what a few nerds are writing on the internet.

It wasn't three weeks ago where somebody claimed to throw that bottle at Ljungberg (as a joke) and MLSR put it in their "investigative report" as signs of holiganism.

Few grains of salt perhaps? more like a whole bag or two.

THis story likely more reflects the fact that his legs aren't what they were and Philly wouldn't offer him DP money. I don't think he'll get that offer.
