So what was going on in New York tonight, and how few fans do they really have for that shiny new stadium.

From Ives' blog (www.soccerbyives.net)

"77th Minute- Tonight's attendance: 1,935. Not many fans, but they're loud tonight."

1,935. In Red Bull Arena.

Shameful.

The Shite Bull's Ultra weren't there. They were outside throwing rocks at a short bus.

I give a pass to the USOC games. Few teams get much of any support out for it.

The league attendance though is definitely disappointing. And of course, Garber is calling for a second NY area team.

There have been plenty of empty seats at Red Bull Arena this season. I thought the new stadium would bring out the fans. I guess not. And Garber is talking about putting a 2nd team in N.Y.? Puh-leeze......

A second team in NY would only work if it was actually in NY. Good luck getting cheap land in one of the NY boroughs.

Agreed. League attendance is definitely the barometer for measuring popularity in American MLS markets. USOC games just don't draw the crowds that we enjoy for V Cup games. Even the USOC final draws poorly.

They really need to start including those games in the Season ticket packages.

Although, for NY that would still only mean like 8k fans.

Disgraceful attendance numbers for what seems to be a beautiful new stadium.

The format is different, so I don't know how feasible your suggestion is. The USOC is more like the FA Cup, whereas the Voyageurs Cup is a miniature league setup.

I know, but I thought I'd take the time to bash indie films while we were at it.

Ah, that's true.

Well, they need to think of something.

It is a US open cup qualifying match.. relax. You know some teams play these games behind doors or at high school stadiums. If TFC had to play Hamilton Croatia at a Burlington high school for a chance to get into the NCC, would you show?

True this was a play in game but the fact remains that the US Open Cup is in a funk. MLS teams don't give a shit about it, USL/NASL/D2 do and it shows on the field typically by MLS teams getting knocked out in the early rounds, USL2/PDL/other teams are usually excited about USOC but rarely get beyond round 1. Not sure what can be done to revitalize it but something needs to be done when PDL teams are pulling twice the attendance of MLS teams in qualification matches.

To me, this is another consequence of the stupid decision to have playoffs for the league title, instead of just for a second and third cup.

Then both cups have resonance with the teams and the fans, and the supporters' shield gets the recognition, which is logical given how many games it takes to win it.

There had been talks resurfacing recently about Mets owner Fred Wilpon jumping back into bringing an MLS team next door to Citi Field. But the latest news indicate that the Islanders could get an arena next door to the ballpark, with Wilpon possibly purchasing the club.

http://nymag.com/daily/sports/2010/05/could_the_islanders_move_to_qu.html

If that happens, it might put a damper on those NY2MLS dreams the Borough Babies always insist will happen. Which means they'll be forced to go back to their original method of finding investors:

Ahhhh....YES. I would definately show up. But this game isn't at a Burlington High School. This game is at BMO field (the equivalent). What's concerning is this combined with their regular season attendance.

You raise a good point. Whereas the NCC involves only teams from the top two divisions in this country, the USOC involves quite a range of clubs from the US - teams from MLS down to the PDL, and even some USASA squads. Rather than these amateur clubs raising their game to the professional standard, the opposite is occurring - MLS teams are fielding weak reserve squads against amateur opponents. When an upset occurs in the USOC, it is rarely the product of a miraculous win on the part of a lower-division team.

I wonder what the average attendance would be like in the NCC if CSL, PDL and PCSL clubs were involved. I can't imagine that a full TFC reserve team would draw well against Brampton, St. Catherine's or any of the lesser-known teams in the CSL.

That's hardly the issue. Most European clubs -- in the FA Cup for example -- also field weakened side in cup contests because of the talent imbalance.

But what it does point to is the need to break through this mentality communities have in North America that it's top quality or nothing. People need to start tempering their expectations somewhat and enjoying the atmosphere a bit more.
