World Cup fans get a head start on boozing?

Toronto bars want to bend liquor laws
By DON PEAT, QMI Agency

TORONTO - Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone is trying to bend Toronto bar hours like Beckham for the World Cup.
Pantalone wants city soccer fans cheering for their team during the tournament - set to kickoff in South Africa next month to be able to belly up to the bar an hour earlier than Ontario liquor laws normally allow.
The city councillor and mayoral candidate will ask his fellow councillors next week to approve asking the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to allow Toronto businesses to start serving booze at 10 a.m. for the month the World Cup lasts.

"I think the fans at Toronto FC show Torontonians can enjoy the game without causing trouble," he said.

Nice to see us being held up as positive examples, rather than as troublemakers, a la MLSR.

The 24th Minute has a good write-up about some of the potential obstacles that might hinder the signing of foreign players.

http://www.24thminute.com/2010/05/well-kept-secrets.html

Up until now, I never really thought about how challenging it could be for players and their families to immigrate and work in Quebec. I wonder if this might lead to the Impact fielding significantly more Canadian players than Toronto and Vancouver?

Why is this even an issue?

The Impact are already a professional team that has a track record of signing foreign players.

Why would the step to an even better professional league hinder them from continuing the practice?

Look at their team now, they have less Canadians than TFC does.

Duane Rollins is good at what he does, but it sounds like he's just digging too hard for controversy on this issue.

The one interesting thing with Vancouver and Montreal joining MLS is that in future CBA negotiations, the 'scab' card can't be played as BC and Quebec do not allow replacement workers.

Cashcleaner

^ I really don't think Duane is digging for anything. He's just raising a few pertinent points about how difficult it can be to immigrate to the province and attain the proper work permits and whatnot. It's obviously not a huge problem as like you pointed out, the Impact has signed foreign players in the past, but you know how politics are in Quebec.

What about Americans? Will they have more roster restrictions in MLS than they've had in USL? Are there domestic quotas in USL?

In the USL both Canadians and Americans are considered domestic.

But Montreal has players from Argentina, Portugal, Italy, Jamaica, France and so on.

The Quebec labour laws doesn't seem to be hurting their chances of getting foreigners now.

Bill Archer Wants TFC To Crash And Die… Literally

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com (http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/)

Archer wants another Munich Air Disaster I guess.
--------------------------------------------------------

For the record, I hate many of the fans that support The Columbus Crew. Many of their most ardent supporters are parochial, arrogant, ignorant, provincial and jealous of others, and especially when it comes to Toronto FC. Some of them I am sure are pretty nice people but the nice ones they get drowned out by the noise coming from a select few.

The inferiority complex displayed by many Crew fans stems from I think a deep seeded feeling that the overall poor support they receive from their community in comparison to Toronto for example, makes them feel that they might at some point lose their club. They are day one members of the league and are an “old guard” side that feel resistant to change and new approaches that they cannot hope to possibly benefit from or be able to implement. Brash Canadians come to the league in 2007 and by the thousands show the old guard how support can be generated and sustained and they get pissed off.

The fact that they have never lost to TFC (ARGH) and have even won the league two years ago appears to not be enough for many. They still have a great club on the pitch (far better than TFC unfortunately) with some wonderful players and they have been near or top of the league table the past couple of seasons for very good reason. Robbie Rogers and Chad Marshall for example could play for my club any day of the week. Frankly those two would fill our two largest glaring needs…. But I digress.

The problems between the fans of these two clubs have been well documented and I won’t do so again in this space. Suffice it to say there will always be a visceral dislike between them and us. And that is okay by me.

With Montreal coming into MLS in 2012, the Impact automatically become our natural rivals and I think that is not going down too well in parts of central Ohio today. The hyperbole of some TFC fans that state that this new Montreal rivalry is a body blow to the Crew is to me extremely overblown. Empty seats and marketing to the Soccer moms will be their downfall, not TFC fans losing interest in the Crew. Perhaps The Nordecke misses us already. Who knows? But one “infamous” Columbus pundit, Bill Archer, crossed the line today between criticism and pure hate.

On BigSoccer he wrote the following:

“…If you want a hearty laugh, you should check out what TFC fans are saying about how this (the Montreal expansion announced earlier this morning by Don Garber) is a death blow to Columbus because we won’t have them as rivals any more….Honestly, is their arrogance up there absolutely bottomless?

Their whole team could go down in a fiery plane crash tomorrow and nobody down here would give a crap one way or the other…”

To him I will say the following.

Bill, I hope that the Crew moves to St. Louis, Atlanta, Miami or some other city that will hopefully provide the support that the franchise deserves. You and your ilk can count on a couple of concerts on that stage next to the Nordecke I guess as consolation.

I actually feel really sorry for you. Your hate will die with your franchise. All in due time.

And to BigSoccer Inc. I say that you should be ashamed to employ a douchebag such as this and actually pay him. You are an absolute disgrace of a company.

bgnewf, Don't be so sensitive and literal.

Guy's a douchebag, but he's not saying he wants that to happen. he's just saying tfc's existence isn't all that important to columbus' existence, which is true, he just used a douchebaggy way of saying it, but that's what he does, takes a basic argument and uses inflammatory language to argue it, so he gets a reaction.

Now you're kind of doing the same to try and get hits for your blog. you're learning well young grasshopper.

You were right the first time, deep seeded makes more sense if you think about it, and maybe that's a phrase as well, but deep seated is perfectly correct

Anyway, getting back on topic... you know, BS could use a more level-headed blogger such as yourself. At the moment, we've got very little Canadian representation on that site and I bet they would be open to your input on a regular basis.

The league should definitely relocate the Crew. They are a financial drain on the league, a chronic welfare patient, and the sooner we get rid of them the better off the league will be. If we were allowed to use only our own financial resources as clubs, the Crew would be blown out of the water by us every single time. The only reason they're not bottom of the table every single year is because of the handicap salary cap and revenue sharing system in place.

I agree, but we're not clubs, we're franchises. Isn't Columbus owned by the Hunt family, the founders of MLS? They have put a significant amount of money into the league, haven't they?

This is why I don't think they would move the Crew unless it was under dire circumstances.
Not to mention the fan(s) would put up such a stink about how We were the first franchise and We built the 1st ever SSS in the country that MLS would have to concede that CBus is placed in a very central position geographically that it draws fans from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Of course you could say the same if the club was in Detroit or Indianapolis.
I will say this. The franchise has come along way since the first season to the point where it does have its' own niche in the realm of US soccer and sports in Ohio to where they consider themselves the 'Green Bay' of MLS if you will.
This also makes them zealots about their club to the point that they will attack ANYONE who makes the slightest chide about their players, club, city, colours, coach, state flag, city flag, supporters group, and stadium.
It's kind of like cornering a skunk. Nothing good comes from it.
