Actually, Montreal is at -2.

twistedchinaman
05-06-2010, 12:29 AM
My sentiments exactly -- draw does none of these teams much good except for the team that isn't playing and has won before.

Now, here's where we stand (W-D-T):

TFC: 1-0-0 = 3 (+2)
VAN: 0-1-0 = 1 (0)
MTL: 0-1-1 = 1 (-2)

We win on Wednesday, we're at 6. Hypothetically, let's say it's a 1-0 win. Here's how it stacks up:

TFC: 2-0-0 = 6 (+3)
VAN: 0-1-0 = 1 (0)
MTL: 0-1-2 = 1 (-3)

Now this leaves three games to play: TFC/Whitecraps home and away + Whitecraps @ Limpact. IF we beat Montreal, and win one of our matches against Vancouver...it's all over, fat lady sings, curtain falls and the roses are thrown onto the stage.

BUT if we DRAW with Montreal, then that's a bit stickier. (Again, assuming 1-1)

TFC: 1-1-0 = 4 (+1)
MTL 0-2-1 = 2 (-1)
VAN: 0-1-0 = 1 (0)

Not as rosy a picture now, is it? This would open the door for the Whitecraps, and leave that same door only slightly ajar for the Limpact. If they then proceed to lose to the Whitecraps at home, then the matches between us and Vancouver become a two-legged series to determine Canada's champion.

So to keep it simple. Two wins, boys -- GIT 'ER DONE!

Doesn't Swangard only hold something like 6,000?

Also Vancouver currently suffers from MLS syndrome. TFC and Seattle are the only two MLS teams that come immediately to mind who's stadiums are actually in the Municipality that appears in their names.

Dos Santos is a Nutter, Captain Caveman Strikes Again, And Things are Looking Good For TFC

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com (http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/)

comments always welcome

__________________________________________________ ____________

The Montreal Impact can always be counted upon for some comedic relief, so far at least, during the 2010 edition of the Canadian Championship for The Voyageurs Cup. I usually am up late watching Jon Stewart or Steven Colbert anyways on a weeknight before nodding off, but of course last night I was watching the cup tie between the Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps instead. I did not miss my comedy programs one single bit.

TFC cast-off and Captain Caveman look alike Adam Braz took a silly second yellow card and sending off late in the game that led to a Marcus Haber penalty to tie the game at 1-all.

But I digress.

I wanted to draw your attention to some comments made by Montreal coach Mark Dos Santos after the game last week in Toronto and of course after the draw last night in Vancouver. I think that this guy has completely lost the plot.

Last week he claimed that the officials favoured TFC all night because they are in Major League Soccer and Montreal is not. He said the referee should have been “…more courageous…” in his calls against TFC. “When you see a player that has X or Y (on his back) fall he might not call it but if De Rosario or (Julian) de Guzman falls, he’s going to call it right away.” No matter that Toronto received more cautions and cards during the match of course.

And incredibly he went on to insert yet another foot into his mouth last evening when he stated that "…since the start of the tournament, we are the strongest team when we play 11 versus 11…We dominated the first 80 minutes of play, but we were unable to score a second goal. It hurts when you tie a match this way because we came here to win. We already won this tournament with seven points, so we must continue believing…”
Dos Santos would be better served working with trying to get his undisciplined club to play better football without all the hyperbole. Yes Montreal were arguably the better side for the first 45 minutes last night but Vancouver took the match to them in the second and were in my eyes the better side overall on the night.

If Toronto can go into Montreal next Wednesday evening and secure another victory then Montreal will be eliminated and it’ll be between TFC and Vancouver to decide who gets into the Champions League. And in an ironic twist if TFC does win and eliminate the Impact we are looking at another scenario the week following where Montreal will not have any motivation two years in a row in this tournament to field a strong side in their last home tournament match.
Whitecaps fans are still bleating of course over the “Miracle in Montreal” game last season when the Impact did not field their strongest side possible and TFC scored six goals to secure the championship. And in two weeks Montreal may very well do the same thing to the detriment of Toronto FC depending on how next week’s Voyageurs Cup game goes.

I think that you won’t hear from Toronto fans the same sort of bile directed towards Montreal as Whitecaps fans spewed forth if this is the case once again. Vancouver would do exactly the same thing would they not?

Toronto had to still score five goals against a side of professional players away from home in tough conditions last year to win on goal differential. And they did it.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, Toronto FC has to do the business in Montreal for the third year in a row…. And there is the little thing to deal with called the Chicago Fire on Saturday afternoon.

More on that tomorrow.

Swangard's capacity is around 5,300 for Whitecaps games. It's capacity is a bit higher for Canadian national team games (6,900), though it's been almost five years since our men's team played its last game at that facility.

No matter how you analyze it, anything less than a sell-out in a stadium of that size looks pathetic, especially when important cup ties are being played. That said, even the Seattle Sounders didn't draw well in their last season in USL-1. Vancouver's attendance will be dramatically higher next season.

It was a long time ago. I think they had more bleachers at both ends - thanks for the info, saves me having to look it up. I thought it was hilarious that the "south end" seemed like a couple of picnic tables stacked together with about 20 fans singing. They make Columbus look good lol.

Vancouver has a higher average attendance than both Seattle Sounders and Toronto Lynx when both were in A-League/USL1. With MLS coming, attendance should rise to near Seattle levels once hockey season is over. The original NASL Whitecaps averaged over 20,000 in their later years in the late-70s and early 80s. They also had over 100,000 fans show up to their victory parade after winning the 1979 Championship. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6dGbAFdOJQ

Vancouver is a hockey town and the Canucks, for most, are the only game in town until playoffs are over (foreign concept in Toronto I know). Had last night's game been played on a weekend and on a night when the Canucks weren't playing 2nd round home playoff game there's no doubt Swangard would've been a packed house.

TFC should win this tournament. I was not impressed by either side last night and was not impressed by MTL before. I definately think we have more dangerous players in DeRo, JDG and Barrett. If we're talking used too's, didn't New York used to draw more than 20,000 around that time and look how far they've come too lol...
I have no doubt the Whitecaps will do well at the gate when they start in MLS. I just find it pathetic that 4,000 show up for a game of this magnitude, hockey play-offs or not.
As a former 86'er fan, I found it so frustrating going to games at Swanguard. Their idea of a promotion was giving tickets away to 6 year olds soccer teams. They would announce birthdays etc over the PA in the middle of games. Even some of my friends who were die hard footy fans stopped going and eventually I did too. Watching that game on TV last night, it was just embarassing I've seen better atmosphere at high school volley ball games.
It's funny, TFC is like the opposite (good atmosphere but bad on-field results). But I'd rather have BMO atmosphere and lose every game than win games and sit on bleachers golf-clapping with a couple hundred losers.
Hopefully the city embraces MLS and I think the franchise has the tools in place to be succesful.

hockey play-offs or not.

Just wait 'til TFC play a weekday game on a night the Leafs are in the playoffs at home.

It's been a while since we've had playoff fever in this city, and TFC have only been around during this current Leafs downturn. Once the Leafs are back, baby is MLS going to take a back seat.

And this scares me to a point. If TFC think this as well then they may not show up in MTL, but I do think playing MTL in the 1st match was good in that TFC now knows that this is a fight tournament and not a soccer tournament.
