View Full Version : May 8 TFC Academy Game @ BMO Field

Does anyone have any plans of sticking around and supporting the academy? It's their first game at BMO this year I believe and I think it would be great to show some support for the kids.

Any interest? It would also be a great chance for people who don't have bunker seats to get together with the rest of the supporters in one section and work on our "major league" choreo without the game day pressure.

Thoughts?

A few friends and I will be sticking around for sure, always enjoyed the reserve games of the past and looking forward to these too.

It will be especially enjoyable that Mr. Lombardo has signed with Portugal FC, fun to bring out the Andre Lombardo chant for old times sake.

Let's do this guys! I will commit to this if you guys do.

I will ask Red Rat to see if we can keep at least some of the drums there to give the kids some "atmosphere".

I'd like to see a couple of hundred of us stick around. I will ask Usector if they're interested as well.

I believe you can, I left after some of the first team games in the past and came back for the reserve matches, the first team game should be over just before 6 pm and the CSL game kickoff at mentioned above is 7 pm.

As many supporters as possible should stick around, lets show the TFC-A the support they deserve.

probably not.. but every time I leave the stadium after the game at the north exit, they are still serving beer at the big Carlsberg setup, and they are still selling hotdogs and poutine there too. So it might be possible to eat and drink up by the Food building before going back to watch the second match.

Paul should consider keeping the North End concessions over a little longer for those who wish to stay. It would be nice to be able to have a beer after the TFC game while waiting for the Acadamy game. Maybe get something to eat as well.
I've stuck around for a few reserves games in the past, and remember it being a bit of a drag not having the option to restock the supplies.
After 90+ minutes of TFC, and then an hour to wait before sitting through another whole game, it seems a lot to ask for us to do it hungry and thirsty.

I'm pretty sure the East End concessions were ope during the reserve games, or at least the ones I stayed for.

I'll likely stick around.

the last time they did this...there was about a 30 min gap between games.
everyone has to move to sections 107 and 108.

I like Roogs idea a lot...would we take over a corner of 107 or 108?

Roogsy
04-30-2010, 08:48 AM
Hmmm...I assumed 112 was where we'd choose to stay but since we have the run of the place, we could go anywhere I suppose!

I will PM Paul to see what choices we have to stick around and at least have a few frosty ones instead of leaving the grounds because let's be honest:

leave the grounds = lots of people won't come back

Roogsy
04-30-2010, 09:47 AM
Anything that needs to go to storage would have to go. The TFC game will likely end around 6 which means the Academy game will probably start at 7. On the weekends I believe storage closes at 8 so we would not be able to put stuff in.

I suggest we put the "big stuff" back. Red Thunder, banners etc. and keep the little stuff like my snare drum, Jack's tom etc. You know, stuff we can keep in our cars and garages. That way, we can still have drums but will have to do without the big stuff that has to has to be in storage.

I used to always stick around for the reserve games when they were on and it was fun plus there was no traffic on the way out later on. It will be weather dependent for me though because I probably won't want to stick around if it is raining hard plus my kids will be with me because of the escort day so I wouldn't make them sit in the rain either. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I decided to give the TFC office a call and get some answer about this game for the group and myself.

Talked to a young lady named Laura (Paul please take note).

Conversation went something like this.

Me: Hey I have a ticket to the MLS game on the 8th, I was interested in attending the Canadian Soccer League game following the MLS game. Does the MLS ticket cover the cost for the CSL game?

Laura: Canadian Soccer League game...I don’t think so, I haven’t heard of a Canadian.. Soccer League? game.

Me: The TFC Academy team plays in the CSL and they are playing after.

Laura: Oh ok, let me ask someone (asks a lady name Heather). Yea you can stay for both games

Me: OK great, will be able to leave the stadium between games

Laura: No you cannot leave the stadium

Me: We’ll that sounds odd, you can leave at half-time during the MLS games.

Laura: Oh well I dont no, just ask someone once your there.

Me: Alright.......... will there be any concessions open during the Academy game?

Laura: uhhhh, i don’t no, maybe. You’ll have to move to the west side of the stadium I think though.

Me: Thanks for all the information, bye.

Lets get our act together FO. The Montreal Impact ran their reserve squad (TR Attack) professionally. They had their own, grade A, website, staff, and fan we’re given proper information without digging around for it. A few thousand turned out per game, which can be credited to the FO work.
Get on the same page and be informed about the all aspects of the organization. Give us something to be proud of. I was disgusted by the lack of professionalism shown by Laura, and even her fellow employee Heather...they were clueless! I’d love to hear some input Paul, and some answers to the simplest of questions.

you were 'disgusted' because someone couldn't answer your questions?
I'm 'disgusted' by the smell of rotting milk, and disgusted when someone
doesn't pickup after their dog. -- not when someone doesn't know the
answers to some questions that are probably not their department.

and while I do understand that it's frustrating to talk with someone who
doesn't have solid answers, maybe the conversation should go like this:

caller: hello. I'm calling about the TFC academy game this weekend. Are you the best person to talk to?
person: let me transfer you.

Roogsy
05-03-2010, 02:33 PM

Again, let's get on the same page FO. A ticket sales rep should be able to answer such questions. Give me a break parky(love ur pics btw), she didn’t even know their was a game until she asked around. Any manager would be ashamed of their employee for such ignorance. Maybe a little office tea-party is needed to informing everyone on the Academy team.

yeah, I'm just thinking that the academy is really low on their list, so unless you're talking to someone who's specifically involved with it, then you'd get non-answers from them.

If someone called me and asked about another department, I'd transfer them to someone who knew more. That's their only real mistake, not transferring you. Someone in the office must know what's up.

this is exactly the problem though. it's so "low on their list" that the ticket reps don't even know we have a reserve team or what the friggin' CSL is.

I'll agree with you that the first person you get through to might not know all the details to a high level, but there should at least be some basic level of awareness that TFC (the organisation you represent and are selling people tickets to) actually has a reserve team and that paying ticket holders can attend that game too.

Yes, probably so Parky.

To hamiltonfan: OK, maybe they should have things a bit more together but I will say that I have dealt with Laura Magee several times in the past and she has never been anything less than extremely helpful and totally professional.

Saying that your "disgusted" tells us more about you than it does Laura or Heather!

hamiltonfan
05-03-2010, 06:27 PM
Well good thing I don’t work at TFC FO then right Blizzard. An ignorant employee is ideal employee, not knowledge employees that have a deep interest in what they do. If striving perfection makes me look like an assh*le, then so be it. I have nothing against the lady, I just felt like the issue should be public to demand better from the club. Again, lets get on the same page TFC FO. All bit it, it’s not exclusively her fault, management should have addressed the entire staff in far greater detail than they have regarding TFCA.

Disgusted may have being harsh..disappointed may have being a better term. Whatever the case, it's irrelevant what I say on a message board. It's not irrelevant what a sales rep says to a customer. Lets get back to reality. This is a business people, not a moma-popa corner store.

Back to the topic here, any information on the game would be great for all.

Red CB Toronto
05-04-2010, 11:11 AM
As mentioned before I am really looking forward to both games on Saturday along with the first tailgate of the year. It will be great to get as many of us to stick around for the TFC-A game. I have also seen the discussion on both the USector and NEE boards so it looks like it could be possible to get a good sized group out with the word spreading around.

I am not sure if this is the case anymore but when the Toronto FC Academy agreed to join the Canadian Soccer League, the CSL itself was operating the business side of the team, selling tickets, game operations etc.

I assume as typical with MLSE outside of the Marlies, they had no interest in putting the man power and resources into something that would have very little if any economic return for their stakeholders. MLSE is a very conservative company and as a result that is why you have never seen them run a team, say in the Arena Football League, Indoor Soccer and the WNBA etc. to fill dates at the Air Canada Centre.

If you remember early on the CSL was planning on charging something like $20 to attend a game at Lamport Stadium before it was hastily reduced prior to the 2008 season. I had to call the CSL itself to purchase a flex pack the first season. Last year I attended a game for $5 by showing my TFC ticket.

While the TFC FO really might not have much involvement in the games, it would be in the best interest of everyone involved to have who, what, where, when and how crib sheet given out so the basic questions can be answered when asked.

Hehe, yeah I have always thought that the "Parky is an MLSE spy drone sent to infiltrate us while they pay him lots of money" accusations were comically laughable.

I kind of agree with you here in the sense that you have to speak to the right person in any organization to get the info you want, but at the same time surely these guys ARE the right people in this instance, no? I mean, ticket sales people in the front line of customer service. "Do we have a reserve team? Can you go and see them play? Dunno mate, I just sell tickets to the gigs. Now, which band is it you wanna see again? The Seattle Soundclash?" It's not exactly professional or confidence inspiring.

what is going to stop people from facing the field instead of the gate when drinking their beer from the patio?? sounds like a quickly thought up skem to get everyone to chug their beers and buy more haha.

The team should be U20 (U18 now). They had to part ways with a few good players because they were older than 18, that doesn’t make much sense. Doing so would give players a long chance to develop into an MLS caliber player.

It's BMO Field, man. It's run by complete morons. Joke of the league.

I don't think it has to do anything with mismanagement. I am guessing it's a matter of licensing.

but my question still stands
i'm going to bring in a cat and see if i can get it to float in mid air at the patio, since after all, nothing is making sense there

It doesn't make sense...

I would like to see the day that TFC Academy players graduate to TFC but unfortunately that's one of the stupid MLS rules. I think that could be one are where TFC could separate from the the rest of the MLS.

what if we squat in the South?

If we get hog tied to the East, let's party it up in 111

I am up for where ever the group wants to hang, I will be hanging out for it.
The beer garden is normally open for atleast an hour after each home game anyways, also because of the new north stand the beer garden is now considered to be the area betwween the food building and the old gate, the area under the stands is considered not a part of it.

Well who is the only player to play for the TFC Academy in the CSL and the Reds in the MLS?

Amadou Sanyang

They mean that the beer patio will be open for it's normal duration after the game, but closed for the academy game. One concession will be open for food and drinks....

It is unfortunate about the weather. It's really going to limit an already limited attendance...

It won't rain that much. The weather network shows 1mm...it will be comparable to the Seattle game. Not bad!

Should be 3C..by the time the Academy game starts..At that point the lake will actually help moderate the temperature a bit ... maybe a couple of degrees warmer. But the wind could be pretty extreme! Sigh, I chose the wrong game to bring my 2-year old to

I know what you mean, staying around for the first half myself, as you said it was cold as hell. Looking forward to a warmer day when we can get more of the supporters out.

Good to read that the Little Reds pulled out a 1-0 victory on a goal in the 78th minute, also I am sure Mr. Lombardo enjoyed his return to BMO Field, he must have felt right at home.

I posted this last night but in one of the other forums on here.
.................................................. .................................................. .

Result of the CSL game of Saturday May 8, 2010 between TFC Academy and Portugal United played at BMO Field in Toronto at 7:00pm.

78 min...TFCA Doneil Henry GOAL...TFCA Brennan McNicoll chips 40 yard freekick even with goal to wide left of net where TFCA Nicholas Lindsay blocks ball on end line then from 5 yards chips PFC goalie Sotiri Varlokostas guarding one yard out off left post for Henry to head ball into open net from 1 yard.

Final Score:........TFC Academy..........1.............Portugal FC..........0..........

Attendance started at about 100 people left over from the about 17000 people who watched the MLS game between Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire that had ended one hour earlier. (official attendance at that game had been announced as 20060 but many people didn't show up to put up with the intermittent rain and high winds. This CSL game was actually played in better conditions as there was no rain and the wind had somewhat slowed down but still gusted a lot. About 40 people watched the second half which would be the proud parents who usually watch their sons play.

Portugal FC started off the better team despite running into the wind but by the 20th minute, the Academy played at least their equals for the rest of the game.

Brennan McNicoll took almost all the cornerkicks and freekicks in the game. Last year's specialist Jonathan Lao was sometimes used as a decoy. Keith Makubuya and Nicolas Lindsay were the Academy forwards and had a few chances each.

Portugal FC had five former players that I could link with the TFC organization which is only in the fourth year of their history. Andrea Lombardo was a member of the senior Toronto FC team through 2007 and part of 2008. Sotiri Varlokostas was the PFC goalie tonight. (Last year's starter Mike Silva was on the bench). He was a starter last year for the Academy but is now older than 19 and in the Academy's "Logan's Run" imposed age policy was not brought back by the team. (Academy head coach Jason Bent had warned me about that possibility at the CSL press conference earlier in the week). Defender Jamaal Smith had won the 1000+ player TFC roster tryout spot in their initial season and has since played for various CSL teams. Adrian Pena played for the Academy until his parents' famous meltdown incident but still won the CSL Rookie of the Year award in 2008. Richard Asante was a draft choice with TFC during their initial season.

Matt Stinson the CSL Rookie of the Year in 2009 is captain of the Academy this year. Sergio DeLuca is the captain of Portugal FC which pretty much means he won't be back with the PDL Toronto Lynx this year.

Garrett Cyprus earned the shutout for the Academy aggressively making some key catches of crosses into the box which was made more difficult with the wind blowing.

Sylviu Petrescu was the referee in today's game and gave out a few Yellow cards but this was certainly not a rough game.

The stadium had an operating scoreboard with team names and count-up clock working and the fourth official held up the same lighted signboard that the pros use for substitutions. Long-time CSL voice Ennio was in the broadcast booth making announcements.

With almost empty stands, the seagulls swirled around even landing on the corners of the field.

TFC Academy next plays next Saturday a home game at nearby Lamport Stadium (as the MLS team is out of town) at 6:00pm against Hamilton Croatia. I'll probably like that better as when I made my way over to the broadcast booth during halftime to get rosters for the teams, the stadium security staff made me feel most unwelcome...then undoing all their good by leaving as soon as the game ended with all their priceless equipment unattended.
