Canada hoping history repeats itself

BILL BEACON
The Canadian Press

MONTREAL — Midfielder Julian de Guzman believes the current edition of the Canadian national soccer team may be the best in history, but the only thing that could validate that claim would be qualifying for the World Cup in 2010.
“Right now, the quality is totally different from what Canada's used to,” de Guzman said yesterday. “We're more attacking, more confident on the ball, and those are the qualities you need to qualify for a World Cup.”
Canada's only trip to the World Cup was in 1986 in Mexico, where it made some British bookmakers money by failing to score a goal in three first-round games, although it did well to hold mighty France to 1-0 in its opening match.
The long march toward earning a spot in the 2010 tournament in South Africa continues tonight when Canada faces tiny St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the second leg of a two-game, total-goals series at Saputo Stadium.

Advanced computer system giving Toronto FC a leg up on competition

PETER MALLETT

Computer technology first employed by English Premiership teams is helping Toronto FC get a big jump on their Major League Soccer opponents.
“This is certainly going to give us a bit of an edge when we are preparing for games, when we come in at halftime and most certainly after the match is completed,” head coach John Carver said.
A massive computer screen in the team's locker room gives Carver and his players a complete tactical and statistical breakdown of each game they play. The system, called ProZone, combines video replay and computer animation to show players their strengths and weaknesses.
Eight strategically placed cameras at BMO Field and sophisticated computer technology track all 22 players and their every movement on the field, enabling Carver to have a detailed analysis of a game.
“It's a little bit like George Orwell's 1984 and Big Brother – but a positive application of technology,” Carver said during a demonstration of the device at yesterday's practice.
“I first came across [ProZone] when I was coaching at Leeds United. All the soccer schools and top teams in England have these white boards in their locker rooms.

Reds risk perfect BMO mark vs. K.C.

Still unbeaten at home, TFC get visit from Wizards

TORONTO FC vs. KANSAS CITY WIZARDS
BMO FIELD, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
June 21, 2008 | 3:30 p.m. ET (CBC; MetroSports)

One of just two teams still unbeaten on their home field this season, Toronto FC takes on the Kansas City Wizards for the second time this season in the back half of their two-game homestand at BMO Field. TFC has five wins in seven matches on the shores of Lake Ontario this season. The Wizards are back on the road after playing their first home game in more than two months last weekend, falling flat in a loss to Columbus that extended their winless streak to six games. That streak started with the 2-0 loss to TFC on April 26.

Would they wave a flag for Canada?
By Mark Cripps, Tales from the Crypt

One of my favourite soccer players is Paul Stalteri. This Canadian soccer star of Italian descent was born in Etobicoke, Ontario.
Stalteri has played the majority of his soccer career in Europe, where he has been a key, starting roster player no matter what jersey he wore.
In the English Premiership, considered the greatest soccer league on the planet, Stalteri had a lengthy stay in Tottenham. This past season, he played in Fulham (on loan), and helped that team avoid relegation from England's top-tier league.
Stalteri is also the current captain of Canada's National men's soccer team, which is currently looking to qualify for the 2010 world cup.
I wasn't inbred with an appreciation for what is known to many as 'footie' 'calcio' or 'football'. No, my soccer passion has developed over the past 10 years. I watch as much soccer these days as hockey. I love the game. I remember how people would always say that soccer is boring. I couldn't disagree more.
Over the past month, Canada's National soccer team has accomplished some incredible feats.
There's a lot of people out there who call themselves soccer aficionados. I wonder how many could tell me about Paul Stalteri's accomplished soccer career. Or how about Julian de Guzman? He is one Canada's greatest players right now. He's from Toronto as well, and plays in the best league in Spain. Or how about Dwayne De Rosario? Another Canadian soccer star for Houston of North America's No. 1 soccer league, the MLS.

Gary Speed trains with TFC

Reds help Speed with coaching qualification

Veteran midfielder Gary Speed trained with Toronto FC on Thursday and is spending the next few days with the team as he works towards obtaining coaching qualifications. Speed is the leading appearance maker in the English Premiership and has played for Newcastle United, Everton and Bolton Wanderers. He was captain of the Wales National Team before retiring from international soccer in 2004.
Speed currently plays for Sheffield United in the English Championship, and is in Toronto until early next week. "I'm working to obtain my UEFA Pro License which you need if you want to be involved as a manager at the top level in Europe," said Speed. "As part of getting the license you have to go to a foreign club and do a study of how they do things and see how it differs from how we do it in England."
Speed worked with Toronto coach John Carver during his time at Newcastle. "Obviously I know John and Paul Winsper from my time at Newcastle and I still keep in touch with them. It's the off season in England at the moment so it's the perfect time to come over here and do some studying," Speed explained.

Good for him.
It must suck having a home game where most of the crowd is there to see a guy on the road team.
I know that'd fire me up too.

Yeah. Good for them. It was probably the combination of Blanco and ESPN coverage.
