Although I don't condone throwing bottles - can I complain to the commissioner about Ljungberg's constant diving, talking to the ref dispite not being the captain, and egging on the fans with hand gestures...???

Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...

Ljungberg was rested earlier this week, so he could light up TFC and he didn't - so he deteriorated to diving, complaining and being in a pissy mood...

They should just learn to shut the fuck up.

This is what happens when you manufacture a team. They're protesting over referee decisions, but say shit when those decisions go for them. They're planning a "black shirt" tifo, but for what? If you want better officiating, that means you're little green men should stop diving and pleading with a ref. Fair play MEANS fair play. sigh...Hypocrisy at it's finest.

Now this bottle incident comes up. Grow a pair, flounders. These "supporters" are acting like the kid in kindergarten who get a scrape and make sure every single person in the class knows about it. This kinda shit pisses me off.

Wanna know what I think? They're looking for an excuse to get back onto center stage. Last year was the Seattle Sounder show, but now that the attention is elsewhere, they're pouting.

Whoever threw the bottle at Ljungberg deserves to be pilloried, no doubt. But complaining to the Commish about it? Come on, Sounders fans. Short of having teams play in a Plexiglas box under the watchful eye of 21,000 police officers, you can't stop some random shithead from throwing a bottle if he really wants to.

This just sounds like sour grapes about losing to us. Ljungberg wasn't hurt, and play moved forward without incident, so I'm at a loss as to what the outcry is about. Yeah, it was stupid, and if the FO know who the culprit is, I hope he's banned from BMO Field. But taking it any further is just being a pissy little crybaby.

I also can't help but laugh at the hilarious over-reaction of Sounders fans to their teams performance. Protests? Already? You made the playoffs in your first season, and are favourites to do so again, and you're planning black shirt protests, and complaining about a lack of "accountability" from the front office? Give me a break.

I agree, I was down near the beer gardens today and I saw him dive atleast once in the first half, and once in the second half. By dive I mean he went to the ground either with no contact or some contact, but not enough to put him over.

However...as a Rangers fan I have seen a lot of issues with fans throwing lighters and flares and bottles at refs and players and I have seen serious injuries so folks, lets keep it to streamers!!

You never like to see an object thrown, the person involved will for sure get his red card and that's deserved. Case closed really. Despite it being Ljungberg and you can argue it couldn't have happened to a better person, I still disagree with throwing Powerade bottles to the back of people's head.

Kind of cute though how Seattle fans are all about whining and protesting everything that happens to them - just can't deal with being given the runaround by TFC and its supporters who had Ljungberg in their back pocket.

2 Homes Games - 2 Missles from the South East. Not a good sign.

Was the offender (In both occasions) caught? dismissed? At the opener it appeared that no one was tossed but I wasn't paying too much attention. Today, I wasnt there so I can say.

Sad way to paint us all with the same brush, however which ever way you look at - Missles have no place in football.

Now Freddy, Really.. You go on and on about wanting a passionate fanbase, bring reminded of home etc and you get your fluff in a duff over a streamer to start? Nuts up son... Call a spade a spade.

Either way, I don't think the league will sanction but the time is here for the SG's to patrol the South before our good name is dragged through the mud.

If that's the case, then why was he getting into it with me for telling him he was washed up gooner shite? I was quite surprised how easy it was to distract him, and he spent more time chirping back towards us then looking at where he was placing his corners.

I respected the guy before he came to mls, but all he does now is chase the ref around complaining. Remember last year when he ran 40 yards to shove over one of our guys, got into it with our coaching staff, still only got a yellow, and complained about that? hahaha

I don't understand why we get a 16 page thread everytime someone throws a plastic bottle. It wasn't thrown from 112. The guy who threw it was probably sober seeing it was a water bottle the drunks usually throw their beer. This shit happens during all games played outdoors.

Ever watch te NFL? People are throwing shit all the time. No body says anything because the stands are pretty far from the feild but jus take a look at the end zone after a visiting team scores. It really tells a tale.

Two things need to happen to fix this situation.

1. The TV cameras have to show the bottle thrower being dragged out of the section by security (or better still by the police).

2. Instead of coming on a message board and shouting about how this guy should be banned for life, people in the stands have to realize that an act like this means that this guy is no longer "one of us" and therefore does not deserve silent protection from security personnel. There were 18,000 people at BMO Field when this happened. Surely someone saw who did it. The first reaction most fans have when they see this is to pretend like nothing happened. If security comes looking for the guy, people tend to protect his identity because of a percieved loyalty among fans. It is only afterwards that the witnesses have time to think about the consequences that they realize that the guy did not deserve their protection.

Outrage on the Internets is fine but it won't fix this problem. We need a bit of outrage in the real world too. Make the commitment right now that if you witness this kind of incident you will not be afraid to point a finger. I'm not asking you to make a written statement or stand up in court. I'm just asking you to have the guts to say "it was that guy."

At the end of the day, no one is going to get a lifetime ban because you pointed him out to security. The stadium management wouldn't accept the liabilty of that unless the witness was one of their own security staff.

So to finish this rant, Fredie L isn't the only one who needs to grow a pair. When you see this bullshit happen do something about it.

Goodbye bottle thrower...you should be gone.

As for the 12thMinute people getting all high and mighty about someone throwing a PowerAde bottle (perhaps suggesting to Ljundberg that he looked a bit tired), the Sounders fans should clean up their own mess before whining to the commissioner:

(Of course, this was not in the stadium, so I guess it's OK...)

Seattle soccer hooligans choke Timbers fan with scarf

Posted by John de Leon (http://search.nwsource.com/search?searchtype=cq&sort=date&from=ST&source=ST&byline=John de Leon)

-- From Times staff reporter Christine Clarridge:
Soccer hooligans in Seattle?
A Portland Timbers fan who became involved in what he thought was "friendly rivalry banter" with three Sounders FC fans after Seattle lost to Portland (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sounders/2011323319_sounders12.html) last Thursday ended up being choked and dragged him around by his Timbers scarf, according to a police report released Wednesday morning.
According to the report, the 28-year-old Timbers fan was near the intersection of Second Avenue and Yesler Way on his way to catch a bus to his hotel when he got into some trash talk with three men who were wearing Sounders scarves. The victim told police the three Sounders fans followed him until they caught up to him in the 200 block of Yesler Way.

The Sounders fans -- who were now covering their faces with their scarves -- grabbed the Portland fan's scarf and tried to pull it off of him, police said. They also punched the victim in the face, police said.
The three Seattle fans then choked the victim with his scarf and dragged around the sidewalk, according to police.
According to police, the victim was not seriously injured. But police couldn't find the assailants because there were dozens of men in the street with Sounders' scarves.

i think it's great to see many of the posters in this thread not condoning the bottle throwing behavior at BMO, yet it must be very easy for those apologizing and rationalizing it happening yesterday to do so knowing the home numbers here are vastly greater than those at most other MLS venues making the chances of it happening to TFC relatively slim in comparison. which of course isn't in and of itself a justification of bottle throwing isn't it, right?

i'm willing to bet that most of the people in the latter group would be the first ones to shit their pants with righteous indignation, bawwwwww and be pussyhurt about it as much as the seattle fans they're railing against right now, if and when it does happen to TFC at some point in the future.

also i think it's hilarious to accuse seattle of being 'manufactured' when TFC only has 2 years up on them in being in the MLS lol

what exactly are we supposed to do? get 21k security guards to stand over each person and make sure nobody throws anything?

it's going to happen, and it will continue to happen no matter what. period.

ps. FUCK SEATTLE.
NO it won;t happen if People call those losers out... INstead of ignoring it... I am not saying that people should punch out every dude that throws a bottle on the field. But if the rest of the people makes him feel like shit for his moronic action you rest assure he won;t do it again.

These idiots just want attention and want to feel that they achieved something by throwing bottles at a player of high caliber. It's sick but if people don;t call them on it... then it will happen again.

To answer your 21 k ppl.. thing just because there is a lot of doesn;t mean that they have to act dumb... Seattle has way more people yet i don;t hear them having these problems... Yet us in year 4this shit happens virtually every other game...

Wouldn't surprise me ... I was very surprised when I was at QWest for a game, to see that they were allowed to have glass beer bottles in the stands. Accident waiting to happen ...

TFC will happily sell you heavy glass TFC drinking glasses at the game (or at least they used to). One of those thrown from the stands would do as much damage as a beer bottle.

I don't see much of a difference.

Remember last year when he ran 40 yards to shove over one of our guys, got into it with our coaching staff, still only got a yellow, and complained about that? hahaha

i don't think the way he acts on the pitch in MLS is great... he's got a chip on his shoulder. he's a great player, i don't know why he bothers yelling at refs as much as he does and diving.

but i also think that he was so easily annoyed because of streamers and such. that probably set him off...

i don't know how "washed up gooner shite" can make any player mad who's on the verge of retirement anyhow. it's like calling Dichio washed up QPR shite. so... i believe it would be the projectiles, or at least a combination of both to make him have such a short fuse with the fans.

well done if you can make a guy nuts from just words. but i don't think that's solely the issue.

I can safely say that Freddy was interacting with us prior to getting smoked by the unrolled streamer and narrowly dodging the powerade bottle. He didn't want to come over to that corner and you could see it.

He needs to stop chirping the crowd/ref and go back to making Ikea furniture and listening to Abba records.

Why all the discussion about the bottle? Ljundberg stopped his throw-in and called the ref over after he was hit by a streamer. It was only then that he spotted the plastic bottle on the field, and picked that up.

I'm certainly not endorsing the throwing of bottles, but it was the streamer that hit his head that was what delayed the kick.

The issue is that it isn't an isolated incident.

Since year 1, we've had beers and other objects tossed on the field and sort of the field and into the stands (flares in 111, or beers from 227, for example). For the most part, it appears like people have gotten away with it so some continue doing it.

CCTV isn't far away if there aren't elements already under way. MLS laid out a code of conduct, as did our own FO, and if this gets picked up... as it might as Seattle is a very high profile money making club in this league.... who knows what measures we'll be forced to deal with.

I'd love to know if security caught the guy and if so, what's been done... mlsintoronto?

KRO

This is what happens when you allow streamers to be thrown on the field, the morons in the crowd think it's OK to start throwing half full bottles of Gatorade.
Llungberg was complaining about the rolled up streamer that hit him before the bottle landed and De Guzman did a great job of getting rid of the evidence as quickly as possible.
I'm looking forward to the streamer show on Wednesday but keep them in the stands. Throwing them on the field is so 2007.

agreed with most of what you said. the only point i differ on is the "loyalty among fans" argument as to why people don't call security over. that plays a part but i think the bigger reason why people don't alert security is the fear of retaliation. if the guy is stupid enough to throw a bottle on the field, what else is he stupid enough to do (to you for calling him out)? what about his friends (if any) that he's sitting with that won't be ejected along with him?

i think fo should seriously consider setting up a "security text hotline" where fans can anonymously alert security via texts to threats without fear of any repercussions from other fans. i've been to a few nfl stadiums that have this in place (i'm assuming they all do) and have heard nothing but positive things from the sth that i've spoken to.

i think a system like that would encourage more people to come forward not only for bottle throwers, but for otherwise douchey/unsafe behaviour.

Yeah, but MLSE need to have full control. If they were to put nets up or use CCTV and they use isolated incidents like this then they were going to do it anyway. Just like how they created the incident regarding flags, now everyone has to go through one gate.

I find it ridiculous for people to compare this to other places that had problems of mass acts of violence and needing CCTV to shut down violent riots versus someone who throws a plastic bottle.

Nothing, but at least the guard is nearby and maybe the accused would have a chance to face the accuser. Its easy to get someone kicked out behind their back. Seems like this is a common theme developing here.

I think the idea of just telling the guy not to do that has worked much better than these more punitive measures many are advocating for. Lifetime bans, more security all that is simply silly.

Either way, we do not have the problems that warrant a net, or the ratline or anything like that. To say we do is ridiculous.

If your fellow supporter steps out of line, approach them respectfully, tell them we are trying to keep the security out of the stands and offer them a sip of your beer. Befriend and understand instead of divide and rat.

I remember the shower Eddie Johnson received when he scored in our first ever game. It was epic. No one got hurt.

More people have been hurt by ratting out other supporters and security being heavy handed than anything EVER thrown. Just putting that diddy out there.

People have to get used to the fact that the odds of having 1 of 20000 fans at a soccer game throw a bottle on the field are very high! A ref will eventually have us lose a match 3-0 because of this but even then it will not stop because people who will throw bottles when we are winning 2-0 are either a) drunk (can't change that...) or b) not football fans and are just there...

This is all true. We, as supporters, don't encourage such behavior (unless you count streamers) and that the ones who do such things are not supporters because if they are then their ass needs to get whooped and kicked out of the section and out of the SG.
As far as it making too much of it...it depends on what you might see coming down the road. What I think is the people who want this bottle thrower out are thinking down the line as to what gets thrown the next time...a hotdog?, a 4 cup holder?, a bit of cement from the walkway? If these things are not addressed now we could end up seeing this happen:
Hp8Tb2gWwRo
Jc-xuLu98Bw

Now these are extreme cases and we had a few streakers here and there but this is a possibility, given time, and the way MLS clamps down on such behavior who knows what Hell they would throw at us and TFC for the actions of a fan.

marshall_law

i'm going to respectfully disagree with you j.

while the net and some other measures suggested earlier are extreme, i don't see how having accused/accuser meet face-to-face is a good idea. in my experiences at sporting events, that's just escalated the problem.

as for your suggestion about approaching other fans, that's not a problem. if you're comfortable with it, then do it. my point is that not all fans are comfortable with doing that and they need a way to make their concerns heard.

personally, if a fan is stupid enough to throw something on the pitch or pick a fight with another fan, i'm not going to waste my time explaining to him why he's wrong. that's basic sporting event etiquette. i'd rather alert security (by whatever means) and let them deal with it so that i can enjoy the match.

Let me just make sure of something here. Last year when a Sounders fan threw a glass bottle, a GLASS bottle... did they ask the league for an immediate reponse? I'm sure they did, I just want to get confirmation.

Until a ref has the balls to abandon the game this stuff will go on. As long as nothings coming from 110, 111 & 112 then KDot pretty much has this nailed. Nothing the majority of us can do.

I can barely tell the difference between Landon Donovan & Nick LaBrocca at a distance. I sure as hell can't see who's throwing bottles in the South West corner.

I think Seattle is making to much of it....I think the fact that this thread will probably 10-12 pages long is making too much of it...there's nothing to be done...just wait...see and suffer the consequences I guess.

We have been pretty good at lossing matches 3-0 all by ourselves. Just saying.

I would never through anything that could hurt someone on the pitch, but this is made too much off, in my opinion.

Am I the only one who finds the throwing of objects at the opposing players hillarious?

Seriously tell the truth, how many of you laughed when you saw Freddy's reaction. Shit was priceless.

I'm not syaing do it, I'm just saying it's awesome to watch.

I think I would have found it funny in high school,...are you in high school?
It's pretty immature to throw the bottle, or even think that it's funny to throw bottles at people.

The ass wipes who throw shit don't belong at the games. They need to get banned from the stadium. Better yet, the people who see this kind of behavior needs to rat them out to the security. They're shit anyways,...if you leave them be, we'll be having this discussion again and again.

couldnt agree more. we're there to support, they're there to play. anyone that tosses anything on the field with the intent on injuring a player needs to fuck right off.
