View Full Version : Pre-Game: TFC vs. Seattle Sounders (April 25th)

TFC USA

Forget the last game ever happened.

Early 2 PM kickoff for us on CBC against the 2-1-1 Seattle Sounders. We need some revenge after a 2-0 loss at BMO and a 0-0 draw at Qwest that should've been a loss.

We've got a tough stretch of games but we're kinda different at home. Let's see how things go.

Oh, and this game also marks the return of Nigel Reed. :scarf::canada::D

Low expectations for TFC make my life much easier. Watching Seattle play is a joy though... that team certainly plays some beautiful soccer. Add to that some speedy + technical guys on the wings, and we're probably going to get hammered.

3-0 Seattle is my call... I like to be optimistic :)

Eh, I retain some small shred of optimism that we can make this a good game. I remember last year we played them really well in Seattle. And hopefully the home crowd can give them a small boost.

Brain is telling me this game will be 2-0 Seattle. Heart is telling me this will be 1-1 or 1-0 Toronto.

Don't worry guys, by mid may Mo will be gone. Anselmi will have to toss him out on his ass to protect himself when we hit 1-5-0. It'll be Preki's ship soon and for better or worse, at least we won't have to worry about seeing Dickov here.

well, you would think it's Montero and Ljundberg who are going to kill us this game, I think it's going to be Zakuani and Nyassi. They are going to have a field day with our RB and LB. Particularly Zakuani going up against either Hscanovic or Harden. We are going to lose 2-0 at home again to them and both goals will come from the wings. Frei will keep it close.

Ive been following Seattle so far this season and they are really dangerous! everyone is on the same page over there. They play possession style, on the ground and kind of lull u into a trance....and then BANG the counter attack comes out of nowhere and your down 1-nil leaving you scratching your head.....

this is going to be a long long road ahead.........

The schedule may just help us out this time. Seattle play Thursday in Dallas. Then they need to head over to Toronto. Hopefully a tired Sounders team and a packed BMO will be the trick to us taking 3 points.

Well said. I'm less worried about Nyassi, as his brother in New Englandis the more dangerous. But Zakuani beefed up in the off season and is an absolute monster now on the ball.

Seriously, they're a league above us right now. I'd go with 4-0.

(ANd they get Blaise NKufo in two months. Oy vey.)

Seattle's big problem again this year is scoring. they go forward well but that final touch is off. They were lucky to get a win against KC the other day right at the end when some rookie named Fucito scored in the dying seconds. Zakuani still has scoring problems. I think he's overrated. I think their goal(s) will come from Montero (he's got only 1 in 4 games... probably due).

Since TFC doesn't have a red card yet this season, I wouldn't worry about that.

Seattle has only 1 fewer yellow than TFC does.

So Seattle and TFC have about the same odds of getting down to 10 men on Sunday.

Pardon me while I laugh at this. You're talking stats, based on what, 4 games? Odds of getting a red? What the hell is that?

I've watched Seattle's games... they've gotten a few yellows, but none of them were nearly as clumsy or malicious as some of the crap "tackles" that the likes of Saric and Hscanovic have put in. I'm shocked that both of them haven't been redded once or twice already... especially Saric. That man has no quality on the ball, and very little technique going into a tackle... add that to the fact that he seems to carry a little temper when running around like a headless chicken in the midfield, and we got a dangerous card machine.

Zakuani's a winger, he's not expected to score a lot of goals. He set up their opener against Philly and nobody in Seattle seems to think he's struggling.

They're having issues scoring, but they haven't played our stellar defense yet (and no knock on Cann and Attakora here, I'm talking about our foulbacks.)

Fushida
04-19-2010, 10:38 PM
Based on the play of our fullbacks... you don't exactly need to be a technically gifted player. You just need to be fast. Nyassi and Zakuani are both fast and pretty good technically. I'm sure Preki is smart enough to see that... though he doesn't have the tools to deal with it at all.

Seattle play a fast tempo game in the final third... frankly I don't think our slow defenders (both mind and body) can deal with it.

Zakuani's a winger, he's not expected to score a lot of goals.

By "scoring problems," I mean he has problems with finishing. In other words, Zakuani's not a threat to actually succeed, but he can create chances that go missing. Seattle has serious problems with getting the ball in the net. From watching their games, I see they have nice buildup and Keller is still a rock in the net, and they create chances, but finishing is a problem unless Montero can step it up.

Adding to the drinking game this weekend: a gulp for every time Ljundberg whines and complains to the ref. It's brutal.

Serious problems with putting the ball in the net? they have 5 goals this season, that my friend is above average. Hardly serious problems. I've watched every game they've played as well and watched their home opener live, if you seriously think we'll have no problem handling Zakuani then you are in for a big surprise. Hopefully Preki has a different attitude then yours and hopefully he adjusts to that. They dont' have Jacqua which is probably the reason Montero is struggling.

Nah, Rocker's right on this one man. It's serious relative to the number of chances they're creating. They should have, like, 12 by now at least.

Hey super cereal, please give your head a shake. The last time I checked, we support "the red's"

This white jersey nonsence is nothing more than a Hoarish attempt to sell even more jerseys.

Frankly,. I am starting to think the hondurans over on Atlantic are providing everyone with a real and increasingly acceptable value ad. After all, who cares is adidas only has 2 stripes as long as the colour is red, and TFC is spelled correctly! (on that note, please excuse my typing...)

The only time we should wear anything other than red (Home and away) is when it clashes with the other team's kit.

White at home = fail. ....or I guess sale.

I like the look of the white kit, but a white alternate strip isn't exactly the most original thing in the world. Would have liked a dark grey kit much more.

as for the game. Can't see us getting 3 points. If we can get lucky and keep Seattle off the board, it may be 1-1.

I'm thinking 2-0 or 2-1 Seattle though :(

THis game will mark a decisive moment for this season. IF as I suggest ealrier in this thread, we get run over by a bus, then at 2-0 or 3-0 the levels of outrage will be epic.

But that's not what I was hearing. What I got from the conversation is that Rocker isn't worried about Zakuani or Seattle for that matter because they haven't been putting balls in the net. I beg to differ, they've been putting balls in the net. Maybe not relative to their chances they've created but that is even bigger reason to be concerned. This defense could be what Seattle needed in terms of getting confident with their finishing abilities. I don't know, I'm hoping Preki can pull some magic and find a way to stop these guys from creating chances.

Its funny since that's how teams win against us, but we never seem to have the same amount of pressure on them. Our defensive pressure thus far has been far lacking. More often than not our defenders are sitting back and inviting the opposing team to dribble at them.

Our only shot is to play full-field pressure and breakup their flow as much as possible, mark up man to man and stick throughout, and play straight two way.

If we narrow the play but keep a fairly wide shape, maybe we can minimize their speed a bit.

I am supremely confident - even though we are in only year four of the plan - that we still have enough about us to see off the seattle puke greens; hmm...probably 3-1 with Labrocca, barrett and dero scoring - Seattle scoring when Zakuni fakes a shot and JDG runs out of our penalty area screaming in fright, allowing Zakuni an uncontested pass for a Montero tap-in...

Neither Seattle nor Dallas look that good tonight (1-1 end of first half)

Cunningham won the penalty by streaking between Keller and Hurtado on an innocent looking play, then scored on the PK. Man, he has blazing speed, especially for a guy turning 34 this summer.

didnt care who won this game but mls refs are terrible this league will never advance with the officiating the way it is......how many reds and spot kicks have been given????

If you are judging by red cards then I guess the champions league ref who gave out two reds in one game is horrible too. Refs are bad in every league. Every game I watch in any league I have a complaint about the ref.

I'll be at the game sunday. I think if we can keep it close we have a chance. Hard to do with 1/2 a defensive unit but let's hope for the best. 2-1 TFC is my prediction ;)

Enjoy the game guys!

Harden Nana Cann Gargan

I say go with that...can't see how they'd have a stronger lineup....AND KEEP GARCIA & SARIC AWAY FROM THE PITCH!!!!!

I want us to win.

But if we lose, let it be ugly. I'm tired of moral victories, and parsing out the things that went well in a loss. Let it be ugly, and let's get on with what inevitably has to happen.

I like it. It allows DeRo to play to his strengths as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers. Barrett and White showed some chemistry towards the end of last season as well.

As for the assumption that Preki is a disliked by the players...

Aside from getting back into fit form, Barrett also has to fight to maintain the right frame of mind — Preki pulled him aside when the forward hung his head after blowing a scoring chance in the team scrimmage during Friday's training session.
"The challenge with Chad is getting him to where he needs to be fitness-wise, but also, I think with him, it's mental," the coach explained. "If he misses a chance he puts his head down, and I'm trying to work with him. Telling him 'it's all good, lets make the next one go in.'
"I'm not going to be hard on him if he misses the chance — I'm going to be hard on him if he doesn't work hard for the team and he doesn't have an effort on the field. I'm trying to give him the confidence he needs."
For his part, Barrett appreciated having the coach reach out to him.
"He wants a positive attitude; he wants players to work hard," Barrett said. "He knows that if you put your head down and blame yourself for a chance that you're missing part of the game and letting down your team. I pride myself on my hard work, so he's right — I can't take breaks."

^ yep, I agree on all points.

Considering Chad's injury Preki couldn't test this out during preseason, so I'm hopeful this will be effective.

We do actually have enough decent players to win this, with a good two-way system, nothing complicated but somethingj suited to hard work and pressure.

----------------Frei----------------
Labrocca--Attakora---Cann----Harden

Peterson-----JDG--Cronin-----Barrett
----------DeRosario/White------------

Can't say I agree....Dero is always dropping back and when the famous long kicks of Frei start, White will have no support when he knocks it down....they need to play the diamond and have dero sit just behind a pair of strikers....we have the two tips of the diamond in theory, with dero and JDG...now we just need to fill in the rest...easier said than done with this bunch.

I say a hard fought 1-1 draw on Sunday

Preki needs to put down the crack pipe.

Or maybe you need to.

Preki is acknowledging Reality. Whether we like it or not, we're in pre-season form and just getting the club together. We needed to have our team assembled two weeks before it actually was, and it wasn't. I blame Mo for that.

Preki is making the best of a bad situation and dealing with the fact that this team has little to no chemistry right now.

did anyone listen to the It's Called Football podcast with the Seattle blogger dude?
He thinks Montero won't play on Sunday. He also called Montero like Jeff Cunningham in terms of his streaky play. Apparently Seattle fans are frustrated with Montero, and that Montero only lasts about 50 minutes and doesn't run a lot after that point. I also didn't realize that Montero and Ljundberg weren't clicking, according to the blogger.

Anyone else watching the NYRB vs. PU game? Why is PU able to pass the ball around on the ground and we look like we're handling a live hand grenade when we're on the ball. I wonder how much Backe has to do with NYRB's good form this season.

Let's hope we look like a team that's capable of stringing together 3 10ft passes (under pressure) tomorrow.

I know there will be a few. I was on the Emerald City Supporters site yesterday, and a number are making the trip, not sure how many.

Haha, they had the bright idea that they were all going to meet at the Rhino for pre-game drinks...however, a NEE member politely persuaded them to consider another bar. Seems that someone at the Rhino told them it wasn't a supporters bar!
