Am I missing something? Wheeler writes an article about designated players and TFC and doesn't mention DeGuzman once.

Teams with too many big-money players are punished in MLS — designated players or not. TFC has one DP, and that’s Dwayne De Rosario, with a price tag of $425,000.

Wheeler has probably the best grasp on what TFC is gonna do with a second DP slot:

The idea goes like this: TFC gives De Rosario a DP tag, pays him more money and gets more cap space back in return. Making DeRo a DP would hypothetically save the team $90,000 against the cap, and if done so after July 15th, it would save the team significantly more.
It doesn’t matter whether Johnston believes DeRo is worth the money or not. The tangible benefit is undeniable, allowing Johnston to afford players he would otherwise not be able to.

It's not the sexiest thing to do with the allocation, but probably the most practical.

No offense, but he's probably just picked that up off one of the boards. That idea, has been bandied about by many forum regulars on many different football boards, including this one by myself and others.

It's the most logical thing to do. I believe Rudi it said it best, "Pay him $1 more to get him into DP status so we can save on cap space". Or something along those lines.

^^ besides, according to Wheeler De Rosario is already our DP so why bother?

FC Dallas is quite a drop off.

But really, does Columbus manage an average of 13000 a game? It looked two-thirds empty on our opener.

Based on the level of support, Columbus is a disgrace to the league. The city doesn't deserve an MLS franchise let alone a championship contender...

Johnston already has thrown water on the flames suggesting Toronto is in the market for another DP, and specifically shot down the idea of De Rosario becoming a DP. Truth be told, Johnston would have traded away a DP spot to create cap space if it were allowed.

when did Mo say no to additional DP's? hadn't read that before - is this ture?

Actually....

Mo Johnston said regarding the new DP rules he doesn’t expect any teams to be too active until the summer because, “budgets are tight.”

I'm assuming Wheeler is embarrassed about confusing Dero with Deguz.

But assuming he meant Deguz, the point about the 335k cap hit for every DP is valid.

If we moved to 3 DPs it kind of screws up what you can do with the rest of the team.

Hopefully the league figures this out fairly quickly. They seem to think more DPs is OK, and good for the league, but if they see teams can't implement the league's plan properly, perhaps they can tweak their plan.

I don't like the rule, and its far from ideal, but it does allow competent managers to build a team. After the 3 DP, you're left with 1.5 million for 17 players which is an average salary of $88k. If you paid your other 8 starters $125k each, you'd have an average salary of $55k for your bench players. That alone is doable, but your numbers get significantly better if you have a Generation Adidas player in your line up, and if you use allocation money to pay down some of your cap hits.

If it was money well spent, our starting XI could have 3 DPs, Frei's GA contract not counting against the cap, 3 guys making $125k, 4 guys making $250k (paid down to $125k cap hits with $400k in allocation money). That would leave enough money to sign 9 guys making $70k each to fill out the bench...with allocation, a couple of those guys (the regular subs) could make $100k.

The new Red Bull Park is certainly a boost to the numbers, but 2 sounders home games and a Super-clasico kinda skew the numbers a bit.

Oh yeah, for sure. I know a lot of guys here have been talking about it. Up until recently I didn't really think that scenario was all that likely, but the more I think about the pros and cons, the more my mind has changed on the matter.

The league added that you can buy down your cap hit for DP's to $150k with allocation. So if you have a good youth development program you can a) sell young players to Europe for allocation money
b) trade young players to other teams for allocation money
c) graduate your academy players to your roster and that don't count against your cap

3 DP's for $450k total leaves you $2.1m to fill out your roster - which in MLS is more that enough. Makes me think Vancouver will be very happy.
