Question that is unrelated to grass in any way:

What lens/Camera combination are you using to have such strong vignetting, or are you adding that after in pp?

I'm putting it on after in PS. Why? just so it looks a bit different than a boarding point-and-shoot.

the grass will be fine for game day.

- BMO has a state of the art heating system for the grass.
- newly install and properly calibrated irrigation
- world class drainage (USGA calibre)
- a couple of the top companies involved in the Turf and Sportsfield game are installing.
- Mother Nature is on their side, weather isn't forecasting any colder than today for the next 2 weeks.
- some well timed Nitrogen Fertilizer and the field will be super green.

I never thought I'd see this day.

nope it's the same. they kept the exact concrete perimeter that was already there.

a quick look at google maps confirms this for me.

remember the old turf went to that concrete, and then they put black padding down for another few feet on the concrete to protect the players.

There are two new rows in front of the wall at the north end, so the gap between the pitch and north-end seats is now smaller.

the grass is always just one colour (because you only use strain), but how it's move (or 'manscaped' if you will) determines the pattern.

exactly.
http://www.scag.com/lawnstriping.html
The following explains how lawn striping works and what can be done to increase the lawn striping effect.

The "stripes" that you see on a lawn or athletic field are caused by light reflecting off the blades of grass. It has not been cut at a different height nor is it a different breed of grass. The "stripes" are made by bending the blades of grass in different directions.

It's kind of like when you run your hand against upholstery or carpet.

I personally think the next step would be over the south end so they can extend the boxes and keep the same hallway for them.

this is why I believe that the only choice will be the south end, there is room to do it but price point is not logical. Why build more cheap seats?

they new about the expansion 2 years ago, so from that point on they started thinking ahead.
Get grass and 1200 more seats then expand to 27000 at which point make amends good with the fans, have a great field lots of money coming in but fall short on the team,,, hmmmm sounds familiar

now that i see the north stand from the south, it looks like they could definitely "fill in" if they someday decide to tear down those brick buildings. They could start a curve right where the new stand ends on either side, curving in either direction towards the northeast and northwest stands.

We are always at our worst as supporters when the weather is hot and sunny.
It sucks the life out of us!

Cool damp weather is best.
And sure, a roof would shelter many of us from the rain,
But the mere sight of rain somehow seems to inspire youthful enthusiasm.

I think that after weighing the pros and cons... a roof is better than no roof.

a roof over the south end may not protect from the sun, since the sun will get lower in the northwest and shine into your eyes anyway. Now, if they built a roof across the whole west stand, wrapping around to the northwest corner, that would probably block the sun for the southern seats.

In terms of rain, I think the best supporters' "energy" has been during rainy games when everyone was getting soaked.

On first glance it looks like they did nothing to help the fact that none of the stands line up with each other. Neither height nor angle. Maybe I am missing something but it seems most logical to fill corners during the next expansion yet the layout looks too awkward. Maybe I am not seeing the big picture.

I don't think it's a big deal.
If they want to expand seating, they could simply make the North End full size
(rather than the mini-stand they're putting in now)

As for all the stands being different sizes... they could just build individual roofs like a lot of traditional grounds.

Like this for instance:

I agree Parky.
Prefer no roof on BMO, it reminds me of the ball stadium.
Lot's of spring games we froze our butts off.
But the crowd was never as energetic as TFC fans.

you know what..... the more I think about it.... the more I'm in the anti-roof camp.

other than better sound, what's another advantage? And don't say shade, because that's a debatable point.
In my 223 seats, as soon as the sun sets behind the 'Bitch Perch' it drops 10' immediately.
People in 112 are baking away on a nice summer day, and the 200's are getting a cold breeze!

I dont think the whole stadium needs one, but theres no reason the south end doesnt have a little something. besides, when its 30+, a 4pm game is a KILLER, esp if you've had a drink. it's really really hard to keep energy up when the sun is just draining literally everything from you.

Everyone is standing in the south end. If it gets cold there's a great fix available: jump, chant, get active. Still, though, I don't care about any other factor than sound. I sing my head off at every game, and it kills me that it's all for very little. Slap a roof on top of the south end and we'd have an atmosphere fit for a top European league. Seriously!

Now, the question really is: do TFC value good atmosphere? So far: no. They'll sell it as part of the product, and say that they appreciate it, but they won't invest cash to make it many times better PLUS give supporters a bit of help to better coordinate chants. Also, with a roof, you don't have to chant as loudly to make an impact - which would be nice as well. It's time for TFC to put in a bit to help out with the atmosphere.

They've already previously stated it isn't possible to fill the corners, due to regulations.

The best they can do is individual roofs over each stand, which is fine by me - many team grounds are configured this way.

well if the stadium is going to be expanded, (as one of the MLSE dudes hinted at last week) then there's no reason to have a roof now. It's got nothing to do with TFC not valuing the atmosphere. It'd be dumb to build a roof now and then have to rip it off when they expand the stadium.

secondly, what do you mean by the "it's all for very little" line. The south end already sounds massive as it is. Yes, louder is better but I don't think we should sell the south end short here. I sit in 125 -- so diagonally across -- and the south end is very very loud.

Trust me, I know the difference between chanting under a roof - and chanting without one. It's very discouraging to feel as though the sound is not spreading properly - and that sections right next to mine (I'm in 112) can't hear us, etc.. A roof solves this problem - AND it makes the volume that much higher.

There are stadiums in the 3rd division in Norway with roofs, so I don't think I'm asking for too much - it's the very minimum for a supporter to ask for a roof. Expansion may happen, but when? Could be a long time from now. 5-10 years. Slap that roof on there now and be done with it. If you need to expand you just move the roof. Can't be THAT big of a problem/expense.

When it comes time to enlarge the south stand, I hope they don't put a second deck on it. I hope it is a single large bank of seats.

The South Stand should be One Voice, under roof, indivisible.

actually, given that the north stand (just metal) and no real engineering marvel, cost $2million to construct, I would think it'd cost a lost to put a roof up. It'd cost at least that much or more, given that it'd have to be designed carefully with probably just as much metal if not more (since it cannot leak). Then you rip it down -- that costs money.

I think they should put up a roof when they expand the south end. If that's 10 years from now, so be it. It's not a pressing concern at this time in my mind. The south end is loud already and the cost/benefit ratio is just not high enough right now.

So you think we're loud enough already - and therefore no need to improve? Well, in terms of numbers, we should be at least 5 times louder. But I guess we're "loud enough" already so why push for improvement.

Sorry, I really don't agree with you here. We will NEVER coordinate properly from end to the other in the south end until we get a roof. As a supporter who is actually in the south end (you're not) I would like my efforts to go a little bit further than they are right now.

Considering the fact that the atmosphere is the #1 draw at BMO I think it would be a great investment to slap on a roof on the south end. The fact that they don't prove that the club is not run by football people.

Auzzy

Depends how much snow. If it's just a bit, the under-field heating will help to melt the snow, and it will be like a bit of rain. The surface will definitely not be frozen. If it's lots of snow, they can clear most of it first & also prevent the field from getting too mushy. In that way, snow may even better than heavy, prolonged rain -- despite the underfield drainage and all, lots of rain would eventually make the field very soggy. At least they don't have to worry about the condition of the pitch after the game -- they have until next April to get it back in shape.

Very heavy snowfall during the game has sometimes lead to the postponement of matches in other countries. However, for November in Toronto, I would be more worried about rain, the wind off the lake, and the general comfort of players & supporters. But some good Gore-tex gear, a couple of layers underneath, and alcohol to warm the belly & the nose will take care of us at least!

^ true, but it's less likely you will notice your frozen bits until later. Plus if you're less inhibited, and you bounce more as a result, then that should generate some heat, no? ;)

Actually, I'm pretty sure it does increase the temperature of your extremities. It reduces your core temperature. So if you're stuck in an industrial freezer, or wandering across Alaska, alcohol is not a good idea. If you're playing a 90 minute football match and trying to keep your extremities warm in a bit of light snow, it may work better. :D
