This Saturday March 27th at 4pm et.

The season is on and this is our first game of the year. I know Mo isn't our best manager but were going to find out what kind of team we will have pretty soon. I hope we can change things around or were in for a long and depressing season.

It's going to be a tight game, Columbus have been playing well at the end of last season but they didn't win the cup :), there pre-season has not been bad either.

My guess on the score is 1-1. Frei will shine like never before!!

I honestly have no idea what to expect on Saturday because we have yet to see TFC's actual starting lineup play together on a consistent basis. I hope the pre-season was not an accurate indication of what can be expected due to the constant roster shuffling, otherwise 1-1 might be very optimistic...

2-0 Columbus

Shitlicker wins a bullshit PK. Herrera/Renteria makes Garcia look stupid and scores. Frei will make about 5 amazing saves

Difference between Columbus and TFC will again be cohesion between teammates. (and Shitlicker's diving antics)

It's going to feel good laying on some hate on Shitlicker again

I like that we have a defensive minded coach, a solid GK and are opening up on the road. That proverbial play for the draw on the road mentality might work.

Outside of that, I don't know what to expect.

I'm feeling an 0-2 loss, but we are in better defensive shape this year, so maybe 0-1.

I think a 0-0 draw is the best thing we can hope for, and even that seems unrealistic. I hope to not be blown out too much. Hell, let's shoot for the moon and hope we somehow manage to put the ball into the net (in a close 2-1 loss).

Auzzy
03-22-2010, 11:56 AM
I'm sensing an 0-1 loss. I don't know about the PK. I think the chances are 50-50 for how Columbus will score. Will Garcia get burned by speed, as Yohan suggests? Or will Frei bobble a high corner kick, while the other 5 TFC players standing close by, decide to wait for the replay on the scoreboard to decide what they maybe should have done in response?

Nobody prediciting a red card for TFC? How about a panic signing or two this week, that look great now but that we will soon regret? (The new CBA places even more premium on intelligent management, as it will be harder to dump players w/o affecting the cap in a big way.)

Who the hell knows. As mentioned elsewhere, everything is set up so we could be pleasantly suprised by many things that could possibly happen in Columbus. Not holding my breath though.

Mo is that you? ;)

I think we're going to be trounced tbh. The way we played in the preseason combined with the KKKrews loss in the CCCL, they will be out to prove that they have a team right away and we will be deflated quickly.

Now with that being said, I am still hoping and cheering for a win :scarf:

Last year in week 2 Crew scored on a penalty shot, and TFC on a late Crew own goal. Stats were basically even and remember TFC tends to play better against better teams. Crew will be overconfident and a tie or win is actually possible with some solid D and NO RED CARDS. 1-1, or 2-1 is not an impossability.

Very true indeed. As much as I'm concerned about all things TFC at the moment, I really think there's a chance we can pick up a point in Columbus. A win would be beyond my most optimic expectations, but I don't think it's a done deal that we're going to lose this match. Can't wait!

Yeah, but these are the same people who think Lenhart and Schelotto are good dancers.

My feelings are sort of mixed but I feel that TFC will get freak early goal kind of like last year. We go up 1-0 and with our new backline Preki packs the rest of the team in the back and bogs down any chance the Crew has at goal.
If this does happen watch for the Crew to get chippy and start flopping all over the place or try to start crap with TFC players.
This match can turn ugly real quick with how our boys have been playing as of late and the Crew coming off two losses (Toulca in the CCL and FC Dallas in the Pioneer Cup) recently.
The Crew (and their fans) think they deserve this win and our boys are tired of being 'that club'.
If everything goes like I think it will go this game will be a wild affair with little soccer but lots of 'action'.

I feel there is a 10% chance of us winning, due solely to Columbus overconfidence and/or them putting a mix of starters and bench players out there. The main reason I'm going is because if the soccer gods throw a lightening bolt down and we get a flukey win, it will be legendary and I want to see it. Having said that, I say 3-0 Columbus.

i think 3 goals against is a bit much given TFC rarely gave up more than 1 goal in preseason (and they were pretty consistent in that regard except the NY game).
I'll say 0-0 tie. It could be a case of "sneaking out with a tie". I think we're gonna see a lot of ties and low scoring games with TFC this year.
But a tie on the road in MLS is solid.
Any home team in MLS should be expected to beat the visitors to a high degree.

The TFC players need to prove to us the Fans this year.

That they are actually players - and won't disappear at the ends of games.

That they will ACTUALLY finish chances.

And stop teasing us with "what could have been".

With that being said - I think Columbus is the better team right now, but if we go into this game with lots of energy and DeRo and DeGuz doing their thing and our backline playing solid and not making any stupid mistakes.

I think it's possible that we sneak out a win or a tie. But most likely a loss is what's coming. I just hope we don't get crushed.

I mentioned this as well in a previous thread but I am trying to stay positive and not read too much into the pre-season results. The starting lineup has yet to be determined and I'm clinging to the hope that the opening day roster will be far more competitive than what we've witnessed thus far when the results actually mean something...

Well, to be honest, I think we would've made the play-offs last year had we played with a bit more heart. Too many times it looks like many of our players just couldn't care less.

I can recognize they have a better team yet still hate the football team.

I'm not sure why a TFC fan has to appreciate the enemy. Let the Columbus fans appreciate their own team.

I don't respect Schellotto's diving for example, or his whining to the refs after non-calls.
I hated Moreno for his attempts at drawing fouls and whining when he didn't get them.

I was at the PR at TFC match last year(1-0 PR).
It looked like they played us with 10 goalies and a striker when the match started.
Then it looked like 11 keepers after they scored.
Boring as hell but 3 points is three points as I'm sure there is no * beside the win that denotes it as a boring match.
I hope we learned something from that.
I hope we get an early goal then bunker down for the win.
Coming out of there with 3 points and having their fans crying about bloody turtles is a bonus.
I think a Preki team can do this!

If TFC does happen to score the first goal, the last thing we want to do is "bunker down" and defend IMO. Just look at Canada in the gold medal game. They were playing to defend their lead, instead of win the game.
If TFC scores first, we should be pushing to score another, not become entirely defensive.

What is it with Liverpool fans that makes them think they're having such a hard time? you should get together with asif and james sharman and have a good cry about how awful it is once the glory stops.

anyway as for the match today, I'm actually getting quite hopeful for the season as a whole, with another two weeks of practice with the new guys we could be ok.

Guys! Have you seen the teams in the rest of the league??? We are not playing EPL teams here! Our starting 11 isnt perfect but what team has a perfect 11? I think we have what it takes to compete with any team in the league. Lets forget about pre-season and look ahead.

Attakora---Garcia---Harden---Brennan>>>>The only flaw I see is the obvious Garcia

Labrocca---Saric---DeGuzman---Cronin >>>>Solid midfield might need some time to gel but still looks good on paper

DeRo---White>>>>White still hasn't convinced me but if he gets going with DeRo we might have something here.

This is probably one of the better pre-season summaries of our club and the offseason overhaul:

The focus on fitness, however, has been the biggest difference and what has set this training camp apart from those of his predecessors. Preki wants a team that can go a full 90 minutes, a squad that is gritty and tough to play against and one that is technically sound all over the field.

The team showed little of that last season and it cost Toronto FC its first playoff berth. The biggest blow came in a deplorable 5-0 loss to the league-worst Red Bulls in New York with a playoff berth on the line.

So, gone are injury-plagued Serioux, the soft Guevara, the seemingly slow and out-of-shape Gerba and the perennially out-of-position Wynne. Coming in are midfielders Nick LaBrocca and Argentine Martin Saric, who last played in Slovenia, and former Chivas USA goalkeeper Jon Conway.

LaBrocca, a former Colorado Rapids player, has been a model of endurance while TFC director of soccer Mo Johnston praised Saric for his steel-like demeanor. Conway? Preki knows him from their time together at Chivas USA.

It remains to be seen whether the club will rue making such a drastic overhaul, but one thing's for certain: This club needs to make the playoffs in its fourth season -- not only for the fans, but also to secure Johnston’s future.

So why not leave the task in the hands of someone who has taken his last four teams to a place Toronto has never gone before?

There is definitely a more positive outlook now as opposed to a few days ago. Filling out a roster tends to have that effect. I think the additions of Saric and LaBrocca in particular will have an impact on TFC's ability to control the midfield. The only glaring deficiencies are at CB and up front. I hope Gargan starts ahead of Garcia as a RB and Nana is moved to CB to improve in that area but I have a feeling Garcia will get the start. If DeRo can adjust to a secondary striker role than we might have found the long lost solution to our scoring woes. I'm excited to see how it all plays out today...
