MLS and union near 5-year deal

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that Major League Soccer and its players are near agreement on a five-year contract that would avoid a strike scheduled for next week.
The deal was likely to be announced Saturday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made.
The MLS Players Union had said it would strike if an agreement wasn't reached before the league opener on March 25.
Negotiators began intensive talks Thursday in Washington, D.C.

I disagree. The strike threat was credible. I'd wager the players got a lot of what they're looking for, not full free agency, but something a lot more interesting to them than the current system.

There'll be some of that. My guess is this:

- Cap to $2.7 or $2.8 million
- Free agency within the league for out of contract players
- Date at which contracts automatically guaranteed now earlier in season
- Minimum salaries increased (doubled?)

Well if a strike has been averted then I say thank God, let us now put our attention to the game on the field. Lot's to look forward to this MLS season, not only to our own team, real grass, a new stand, new coach, but also for the MLS in general with a new team Philadelphia and their new stadium, and even the Red Bulls with their amazing Euro style soccer stadium Red Bull Arena. Let the games begin, yes I know it's the MLS not the greatest standard of soccer, however, it's our league and it's where our team plays lets enjoy what we have and hope for better days ahead for TFC and MLS in general.

You and I both knew absolute free agency was never going to be given...and the players were able to squeeze a whole lot more than the old deal, which in my opinion is what should have happened. I am thinking this is a good deal for the players and the owners should be happy. The single-entity system lives on unthreatened for them.

Yeah, why not? the more the better. Even if they stock it with overage guys.

Whitecaps had a whole bunch of teams (residency, PDL, Academy) feeding into their main team. European squads are the same ideal. Cast a wide net, it creates competition.

Some details have leaked out:

In the area of guaranteed contracts, it looks as if the union got much of what it wanted. Foose indicated that based on age and years of service "the majority of players" will now have guaranteed deals. Multiple union sources who asked not to be identified added more detail, indicating that players who are aged 24 or higher, and who have three years or more of service in MLS will have guaranteed deals. In terms of unilateral contracts, the gains seemed minor, and the thresholds are slightly higher. Players 25 years of age or older with at least four years of MLS experience can have no more than two unilateral options written into their contract. The union was also able to extract some concessions in terms of wages although neither side would reveal how much.
But the league appears to have carried the day on the issue of free agency, which had been a considerable sticking point in the negotiations. Under the previous agreement, teams retained the rights of players whose contracts had expired, with the union contending such players should have the freedom to negotiate with other MLS teams. Under the terms of the new agreement, a re-entry draft will be held once a year in which out-of-contract players can be claimed by other teams interested in their services. Although on the surface this appears to satisfy some of the union's desire for more flexibility in this area, the league clearly met its goals.
