RSL owner: MLS could crumble if players strike

While his players prepare for a strike, Real Salt Lake's Dave Checketts has joined a growing chorus of Major League Soccer owners and investors who warn that such a move would be "absolutely devastating" to the league.
"I don't know how Major League Soccer survives it, to be honest," Checketts said. "It's that serious."
The players are ready to strike at midnight Tuesday, according to multiple sources and news reports, if they cannot agree with the league on a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the one that expired Jan. 31.
That deadline is barely two days before the new Philadelphia Union expansion team is scheduled to open the season against the Seattle Sounders on national television --and just four days before RSL begins defense of its MLS Cup championship at San Jose on March 27.
"It's definitely a tense time," RSL defender Nat Borchers said.
Yet the players insist they won't abandon their pursuit of what they call basic rights. Primarily, they want greater freedom to change teams and more guaranteed contracts, and voted 383-2 recently to authorize a strike.
Owners maintain that either concession would hurt them financially and jeopardize the stability of the league that has fought for years to build a firm footing on the fringe of the U.S. sports landscape.

According to the Steven Goff, both sides have been talking through the night. Hope that's a good sign and we get this settled soon!

Good news from the junior ladies:

Canada clinches spot at U-17 Women’s World Cup

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica — Team Canada will make its second straight trip to the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after upsetting the United States 1-0 on penalty kicks in the semifinal stage of the CONCACAF soccer championship.
Alison Clarke, Diamond Simpson, Yazmin Ongtengco, Nicole Setterlund and Chantale Campbell each recorded goals as Canada outscored the Americans 5-3 in the shootout after the match stayed scoreless through regulation and extra time.

The Americans are upset:

U.S. U-17 WNT Falls in Penalty Kicks to Canada in Semifinal of CONCACAF U-17 Women's Championship

The 120 minutes were played with the USA as the aggressor while Canada dropped seven players back into defense and attempted to counter-attack through long balls to its forwards. The offensive strategy proved tame, but the defending from the Canadians was inspired. The young Americans were just not quite sharp enough on their final passes and finishing to close out the game.

Canada played an excellent tactical match, clogging the center of the field, man-marking U.S. playmaker Morgan Brian and forcing the young Americans to try to find a way around or though them. That task was made extremely difficult by the Canadians, who gave the Americans little space to attack in the final third.

Um, I think it's more likely that MLSE realizes that they are not a very popular corporate citizen in the public or the TFC fan's eye. Plus, with the engaged supporter's groups here, any comment by MLSE will just touch off a shit storm of debate. Any mention of financial issues on the owners' side by MLSE will be greeted with derision by most people in Canada -- not just soccer fans -- and regardless of their actual financial position related to TFC. They probably (hopefully) realize that they will more likely hurt the owners' position by saying anything.

I, for one, am VERY HAPPY that MLSE has kept quiet about this, and I hope that will continue. I can't see them helping the situation for anyone.

SSG: No SSG can make me forget about the current team at this point:drinking:

Ali Gerba:

Ok, if he's Collin Samuels close cousin, I think we should cut him and stop procrastinating:(

CBC To Show 13 TFC games:

How many of these games are going to be on CBC Bold or shown on tape delay? CBC definitely dropped the ball last year with the Confederations Cup, not only did they show the games at midnight, but for the entire finals the CBC broadcast was a frozen picture of the official soccer ball of the World Cup in South Africa. What a fuckin joke!

I bet they won't dare replace the morning kids shows like Poko or Lunar Jim to show the World Cup.:picard:

You're right, of course.

And that's the worst part, they can't help any situation. No, wait, the worst part is they'll never be held accountable to anyone.

Crew / FC Dallas owner Clark Hunt speaks out:

http://blog.dispatch.com/crew/2010/03/clark_hunt_joins_ownership_cho.shtml

strike would cause ownership to become more entrenched in our positions,” Hunt said, citing the Hunt, Anschutz and Kraft families. “Looking back at all the struggles we’ve had I can say that we would have a very hard time accepting it.”

Checketts has made the strongest comments, indicating that the league “has a plan” and that ownership would be forced to do something “very aggressive and very different” if the players strike.

Union representatives and players are meeting with league negotiators and a federal mediator today in Washington and talks could continue through the weekend.

maybe we could get lucky and something like this could happen again.

In 1966 Stavro helped form the United Soccer Association and entered a team called Toronto City in the new league. The USA originally intended to launch its league in the spring of 1968. However a rival league, the National Professional Soccer League, announced it was ready to launch in 1967. Not wanting to lose ground to its rival, the USA decided to fast track its launch. Without any players of its own, it opted to import whole teams from Europe and South America. It was intended that these teams would represent the franchises during the inaugural season, giving them time to build their own squads for the following season. Toronto City was subsequently represented by Hibernian of the Scottish Football League.[1]

I like Peter Wilt's suggestions yesterday. Have limited free agency, say after 7 years in the league. Made great arguments in my opinion. I would have posted the link, but htat would require me to go find it again haha.
