The San Jose Earthquakes took one step closer to breaking ground on a new stadium late Tuesday evening. The San Jose City Council unanimously approved the measure (http://www.centerlinesoccer.com/2010/03/16/san-jose-city-council-%E2%80%93-live/) to re-zone land around the San Jose airport that would allow construction on a new Earthquakes stadium to take place.
Lew Wolff, the Earthquakes owner, will provide $60 million to help finance the project, and pay the city $7 million for the land near the airport. Reports place the planned stadium capacity at up to 18,000 people.
While no specific date has been set to break ground, having the land approved now lets the stadium naming rights to be sold and sponsors to be brought in to help with funding.
What do you think about the news? Glad that another soccer specific stadium is in the works?

67 million bucks for the new SSS... and near airport so mass transit infrastructure should already in place

Unless San Jose is like Toronto.

^ there is a light-rail line nearby, doesn't go directly to the airport, but very close. Most likely walking distance.

Maybe the Quakes and Wizards can stop claiming they're beggars with new stadia.

Cal Train (like our GO) is designed quite cleverly down there, it does run to the airport and thus making this an ideal location for the quakes. Can't wait till this is built I'll be checking out some games forsure.

The airport isn't convenient to walk as it's at least 2-3 miles depending which way you go and you would have to walk along highways that aren't pedestrianised, which would mean prohibited.

Also that Cal-Train station isn't convenient either. Well it's a mile away but it's on the other side of a wide railway ROW. They would need to build a bridge over the tracks/lands to link up both. If not then the walk would be 1.5 miles around and that would also be on non-pedestrianised roadway.

Once they come up with another 10-20 million bucks they can fill that end in. when you're on a budget it's hard to do everything perfectly.
