View Full Version : New York Red Bulls

I know this is kind of silly, but I was just thinking of this today.

Isn't it pretty pathetic that the New York Red bulls are named after a product? Their team identity is linked to a beverage.

Let us all take a moment to both laugh at New York and their shitty beverage team that plays in a huge, empty football stadium, as well as take another moment to thank the Gods that we are not named "Viagra Toronto", or the "Toronto Mister Clean Magic Erasers"

OH THE RED BULLS...

I can agree with you shakes.. However this energy drink company is making more efforts then us at getting the players needed to be competitive.. I rather be an energy drink with wings then to have some scott push us some stale whisky thats aged and don't do shit to refine iteself..

the annoying thing is when you look up at the drink boards at the concession stands at BMO and see Red Bull... just reminds me of the team every time.

It's ironic that you are an Arsenal fan (based on your avatar) since they are named after a company as well.

"Arsenal were founded as Dial Square in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London, and were renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenal_F.C.

Must be pretty shitty supporting a team who's identity is linked to a defunct factory.

MUFC_Niagara
03-12-2010, 09:44 PM
^^ which company is that? Naming a team after an energy drink vs the factory where the team's founding players worked is a little different.

troy1982
03-12-2010, 09:48 PM
^^ I don't see much difference actually in that both clubs were renamed to include an institutions name, although they aren't identical situations.
I am pointing it's the irony/hypocrisy in the opening post.

What hypocrisy? They are different. What would you expect Woolwich Arsenal to call themselves initially when all their players worked at the factory? The Tulips? What attachment do the players of the NYRB have to Red Bull energey drinks?

By the way...

they had an original name "Dial Square" which was later changed ala the metrostars name being changed. The hypocrisy is with the thread starter not arsenal, which is a fine name just like red bull is.

Players for Red Bull are linked to the company because Red Bull owns the team the players are basicly all red bull employees similar again to royal arsenal employees.

I love how some guys always seem to make fun of teams that beat us........the irony is amazing. Who cares who they are named after? How is it any different than us playing at BMO Field instead of TFC Park or whatever. Also if you think about it all the players do work for Red Bull since they are owned by Red Bull GmbH (http://www.redpatchboys.ca/wiki/Red_Bull_GmbH), therefore it is no different that the Arsenal reference in an earlier post.

Edit - basically I agree with Troy1982

This is the lamest set of arguments ever.

- Playing in a sponsored stadium is not the same as having a team named after a corporation, with the shirt design just being one giant corporate logo.

- The fact that Red Bulls players "technically" (though not really) work for Red Bull is the same as a group of guys at an ammunition factory CREATING a football team, and choosing to name it after where they all work? You really see something analogous there?

- This thread has nothing to do with making fun of teams that have beaten us. I'm guessing by this point every MLS team has beaten us - should I just never make fun of any other team ever then?

It isn't hypocritical, because you're making huge assumptions about my motive for making fun of them.

If a bunch of Red Bull employees decided to create a football team and play for it under their company banner, then bully for them. That is not even close to equivalent to having a corporation buy a professional team, naming it after their flagship product, and making all of the players wear shits that are essentially giant company logos.

I should also point out that at the time the Royal Arsenal wasn't a private corporation - it was created by the government to make munitions for the British Armed Forces.

Thank you, come again.

I was considering pointing this out, but I already knew his response would be to bring up the fact that the loss essentially ended our season singlehandedly.

It's a wonder any football rivalries exist anywhere, since you're apparently not allowed to mock teams that have beaten you before. I should really go let the Spurs fans know that they aren't allowed to make fun of my team anymore.

Until we return the favor and I don't think we should be calling them anything.

Yes, our team shit the bed. And neither of us made the playoffs.

But this idea that rival fans aren't allowed to make fun of a team until the next time they win, is silly. It has been months since last season ended, and that loss was just as culpable for ending our playoffs hopes as any other stupid, unnecessary loss we suffered over the course of the season.

It's a new season, a new day, and I'm not sure if you noticed the OP content - but this post isn't supposed to be some hoity toity critique of New York as a team - it's just a goofy observation (I even call it "kind of silly" in the OP) I made about their team today, after not thinking about it much before.

I'm not saying our team is awesome, but one Red Bulls victory doesn't make up for one of the worst seasons in MLS history.

the Red Bulls are shit. and I think we are entitled to mock the worst team in the entire league. a team that finished worse than us and the earthquakes. that's no small feat.

if we can't make fun of New York, then we really can't make fun of anybody. and that's half the fun of sports. come on, people.

If the ownership in New York cared about their fans more, they'd give up the name and go back to Metrostars.

Believe it or not, there was TFC-like excitement around the Metrostars when they first started in the 90s. Lots of hardcore NY MLS fans left the team when they gave up the Metrostars name. A cursory bs search will show you that it's a big issue still.

They have exasperated/exhausted the base there, only sold 8,000 season tickets have been sold at the new stadium so far. They had more SSH than that in their first 3-4 years at Giants Stadium.

While I agree with the op's point about Corporate sponsorship and the ridiculous levels red bull have take in to, a couple of points.

one, have you seriously only just noticed this???

and two, a few times you mention about turning the shirt into a company logo. What the fuck do you think that big BMO on the front of our shirts? That's the reason I don't own a tfc shirt, and won't unless they do a rapids style sponsorless version, which will probably never happen.

and check out your avatar, what is any casual fan who doesn't know arsenal going to know about which team you support, nothing apart from fly emirates.

and BMO field? meh, that doesn't inspire any sort of warm cozy feeling in me, presumably when the current contract runs out it could easily be changed to whoever wants to pay more money.

corporate sponshorship's unfortunately everywhere, yes red bull has gone way too far by changing the team name and logo, but the shirt and ground sponsorship is nothing different to what we have.

against modern football.

edit: and also, I fully agree with whoever says you can't stop taking the piss just because you lose. And If anyone knows losing, it's a Darlington fan.

You obviously weren't around in season 1. They had a replica version without the BMO logo. Maybe you can get one if you look around (maybe someone will give/sell you a used one). No excuse not to wear the colours.

I was around, though admittedly in a much more casual manner, but that was an ugly shirt, and at the time I didn't really care enough to spend a lot of money on a shirt I didn't like. My wife has one of those though. I ended up with one of those red long sleeve cotton shirts with just the badge on the front and toronto fc and 07 as the name/number on the back.

Yeah, I went through a lot of years of always buying my team's jersey whether I liked it or not, and the whole corporate sponsorship, walking billboard thing never bothered me like it does now. As for the year one replica that didn't say BMO, I didn't really care enough at the time to buy one, it took me a couple of years to really get hooked on tfc.

Going forward, I'll buy one if I like it, I own a few pieces of tfc clothing, but i don't feel like I need to buy that particular piece of merchandise to consider myself a supporter. (just my opinion for myself, I'm not trying to cast any aspersions on anyone who feels differently.)
