Dallas beat New England yesterday 2-0 so I think this will be a good test for us. Apparently the Dallas coach believes the game will be a good barometer of how far along his team is.

Agreed, and that's what worries me. if they strike, it means the players are willing to risk it all for free agency. The league will never cave on that, at least not at this stage. But if the lpayers are trying to call the league's bluff then any "walk back in" would leave them utterly toothless in negotiations and they know it - well, subject to repeated walk outs at intervals to make a point, which would potentially do more damage than a single walk out now for a longer period of time.

Most of the players will be unemployed and many of them won't have other football jobs to go to. The fans lose their league and, in some cases, maybe even their ticket payments for this year. TV companies lose investment, as do sponsors. USSF loses any credibility of a WC bid. CSA becomes even mroe worthless than it is now.

Let's break this down here. Because using players and owners as broad groups ... not all the same.

I think Seattle is going to be pretty upset about the profits they lose per game. As will TFC and a few other clubs. I think redbull will be upset about leaving a stadium empty and not playing, ditto Phily which lands in a league with a strike right off the bat. Owners have quite a bit to chew on. I doubt, the upper crust of this league give a rats ass about much of what's being fought for they just want to be on the field to make $. The amount they'd lose is nothing more than a rounding error.

In terms of the players. I don't think the new ones to the league will care, I don't think the stars will care, but the core MLS lifetime player that this league is built on (who will make up the majority) I assume will pretty much fight this to death.

As I said in another thread, now is not the time to strike. Everyone loses equally before the season starts. But wait until August -- after the world cup or once a team is establishing itself as a contender for the supporters' shield or a playoff spot -- both the owners' side and the players' side will become less cohesive and you'll see a lot more movement.

Imagine the pressure that MLSE or Seattle will put on the other owners if TFC or the Sounders are in playoff contention when the players are ready to walk (they'll definitely be looking at what happened to the 94 Expos!).

Solidarity is easy when everyone loses equally. The time to strike (or lock out) is to when the other side can be divided. I think the players are playing it smart by holding off and playing without a deal.

This is good, really, because the system the old guard had in place may have been necessary when they first started but it's holding them back now. I think you're right, the new owners see this now. There's probably a power struggle going on between old and new, which was inevitable when they started charging $30-40 million franchise fees they were bound to get a different type of owner that wanted more autonomy and clearly realizes they need to spend money to make money.

It's seems very possible that what will emerge from this will be a better league.
