strategic move by the league,

now it forces the players to draw a line in the sand or continue on as is.

No question the players will be the "bad guys" if they strike now.

It's a very interesting strategy, very unusual in sports these days. 90+% of the time there would be a lock out.

My guess is that they were never going to lock them out, as it would likely harm the league's legal position with respect to the single entity. Besides, the league is fine operating under the status quo.

It would also harm them at the box office and TV revenue, in any market where support is weak or indifferent.
