Some names you won't see on the New York Red Bulls roster next year include Danny Cepero, Carlos Johnson, Walter Garcia, and Matthew Mbutu. The club waived goalkeeper Cepero and defendres JOhnson and Garcia. Attacker Mbutu's option wasn't picked up.

The most surprising of the departures is Cepero. A local New Yorker, the 24-year-old played 13 games for the Red Bulls last year, keeping a 1.74 goals against average. In 2008, Cepero stepped into the starting role when Jon Conway was suspended and manned the net as New York made a fairytale run to the MLS Cup final.

Cepero also holds the distinction as the first goalkeeper to score in MLS from open play.

Garcia only had one appearance for the club, so his departure won't raise eyebrows. Johnson, in 13 appearances with the club, picked up one assist and three red cards. Not exactly a clean record.

Mbutu had two goals in 12 appearances for New York after joining from Crystal Palace Baltimore on Sept. 15, 2008.

I don't recall Cepero scoring from open play...I do recall him putting a free kick in on his debut...

Wouldn't surprise me if Goal.com had gotten that one wrong, but if I'm forgetting another goal he scored, someone please remind me.

Yeah, maybe not open play but in his debut, against Columbus and Boyens in the celebration, too. lol.

Hat Trick.

Mbutu is a winger....probably cheap bench player.

Garcia....don't know much about, but if he can replace our own Garcia I would be happy.

for what it's worth, walter garcia is rated pretty high on FM lol

NYRB doing a TFC... revolving door policy

though a bit surprised by Cepero being dropped. he is a cheap, but solid GK, although a bit too short. certainly a good back up for any team

I remember Cepero looking great in at least one, maybe two games against TFC. Unfortunately he was apparently quite inconsistent in league play. Although given all the problems that the Red Bulls have had, I would have a hard time pinning much of that on the goalie...

I remember Mbuta showed some promise. But I don't think he is a need of TFC's at the moment.

yeah, Cepero seems shorter cuz he's not built at all. I mean Frei is bigger in the upper body than him, and Frei's no muscle man.

His face also looks like a little boy's.

So with Cepero leaving does that mean that Sutton has played himself into a contract with the Red Bull? For at least half a season until they get their german keeper in.

Yeah, no way he is 6 2, I do not care what he is listed at, he is not 6.2.

he does look 5'9, thats true
but it has nothing to do with being built, it has to do with the size of your backline
Frei looks his height or taller, because he is sized up against Nick Garcia, Jim Brenna, Marvell Wyne, Adrian Serioux, Nana who are all 5'9-5'11

When you have Boyens whos is 6'4, Mike Petke 6'2, Goldthwaite 6'1, Johnson 6'1
you get my drift.....

sorry but to me Edwin Van De sar does not look 6'5.1/2

here's a pic.. he's not even taller than Juan Pablo.. looks an inch shorter there at least.. no way is he 6'2. so it has nothing to do with the height of his backline.

Petke is listed as 6'2 (third from right, back row), Goldthwaite is listed as 6'1, but looks as tall as Petke in this picture... Juan Pablo is listed as 6'1...

my guess is Juan Pablo is about 6'0 (since he's shorter than Goldthwaite) and Cepero is 5'10. He's also skinnier than most keepers so that makes him look slight.
