Raul in Red Bulls link:
MLS outfit want to hold talks over deal for Real legend

Raul's agent has revealed the Real Madrid legend has attracted interest from other clubs amid reports New York Red Bulls are trying to sign the forward.

However, reports in both of Madrid's leading sports newspapers AS and Marca claim Major League Soccer outfit Red Bulls are planning to hold talks with Real about an end-of-season swoop for Raul.

Carvajal said: "Some clubs have asked about Raul, but that is a question that depends exclusively on the player and he is very happy in Madrid."

Raul has spent his entire career at Real and holds the club's all-time goalscoring record in addition to being the leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League (http://topics.skysports.com/UEFA+Champions+League/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and for the national team.

He still has a lot left in him, unless he wants to pull a Becks and leave while he still has a future at the top level, I can't see it happening.

been talk about this for a while and given his diminished role lately, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Good pickup for NY, he's still got a lot left I think.

source?

there's not much substance to this. "wants to hold talks with Madrid" - that's a bit unilateral. "depends entirely on the player" - has Raul ever directly said he'd consider going to NYC or MLS, or even leaving Madrid? Another rumour, I'm not worried about this yet. Although I will be if he does end up joining the pink cows. How the hell are we shupposed to chant SHITE at him??!! :D

He would tear this league apart.

This story is real, or at least is being taken very seriously in Spain. It dominated the first 5 pages of Marca today, and was picked up elsewhere. At a minimum, someone close to Raul is talking about this (perhaps it's only a negotiating ploy....)

If only we still had FieldTurf to slow him down.

I hate to admit it for obvious reasons, but this would be a great move for the Shite Bulls if they plan on selling out Red Bull Park and a PR bonanza for the MLS...

NYRB gets linked with every big euro player.

I still would prefer our very own JDG. Raul will do wonders for their organization though.

I like JDG, but I'd trade him for Raul in heartbeat. If he comes here, he will be the best player in the league - and there will be a significant gap between him and the 2nd best player.

Not that MLSE would ever splash the money but this is exactly the type of player you use the DP card on.

I hate saying anything in defense of MLSE, but I don't think the issue is money...it's that guys like this are only interested in coming to the MLS if it means playing in NY or LA. I don't think he'd play for KC no matter how much money they threw at him...

Here's a frightening thought: they offer Raul a player-assistant coach position, so that his salary can be covered separately by Red Bulls without affecting the cap.

THen they use the new second DP slot to sign Thierry Henry.

Not too many defences in MLS those two wouldn't tear apart, even at this stage. We're talking about players a step above Angel, of the ability to just walk around many MLS quality defenders. THeir anticipation is light years ahead of most of the players here -- go back to Raul's goal against TFC, where he was right on the spot while three of our defenders looked on. Get used to that and pray New York's defence remains total crap.

^NY still have a 2nd DP slot - they traded for one to cover Reyna, but he retired before his contract was up...they could add Henry and Raul and not even have to give up Angel to do it!

I didn't think there would be a loophole like that. I'm no MLS rules expert, but I'm guessing something like this is covered. Is it even permissible?

MLS have to be wetting themselves at the thought of seeing this place full. Raul's a good start.

I say let them have Raul...just as long as we get JB Angel as part of the deal.

Also - the above pic is Salzburg not New York.

Lord, I hope not.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the league had personal services loopholes all over it. CFL has for years.

League pays players wages, team pays all staff wages. So, make him staff.

It's not. In that infamous Chivas match where we played Tim Regan (our scout), we needed special permission from the league.

^Hard to imagine Raul and Henry would do that move together. It would taint both their legacies in Spain. Barca and Real players are not supposed to be buddies in this way, even after they leave their teams.
