It's in Portuguese, but it's a pretty reliable Portuguese site.

Translation:

Central defender Jorge Andrade will begin a new phase in his career, having signed a contract with Toronto FC.

The 31 year old Portuguese International will return to the pitch, after several serious injuries, the last of which during his time with Juventus, and which motivated the mutual termination of his contract at the Italian club.

Jorge Andrade, ex-Estrela Amadora, FC Porto, Deportivo and Juventus, has 50 caps with the Portuguese National Team.

Other sources have stated he isn't even showing up for camp until Feb 8.
He wouldn't be signed before that unless someone travelled to him to give him a looksee.

The way it's written, and considering the very short nature of the article (2 short paragraphs), I don't see how this could be out of the blue. They're a pretty fact-based site, not as much a rumour mill site. I constantly go there to get updates on the Portuguese Liga.

You never know though, from the way it's written it definitely seems like "signed" rather than "trial", since they mention "a new phase in his career".

I'm still thinking it's a trial, same thing happened with Ibrahim Said, the Egyptian media reported he was signed but it appears he's coming to trial in the Florida camp in the second week of Feb.

I read the article and it says "signed" just like Shinzon says. I am not sure about this as the info I got was that it was a trial.

The Portuguese reports are referencing an Italian report in which it sounds more like a trial:

http://www.calciomercato.it/news/70466/Meteora-juventina-verso-il-Nord-America-.html

Mentions the length of the trial as running from the 8th to the 18th.

TFC are always the last to say anything about what Toronto is doing.

Yeah, like all those other times they didn't announce signings they made...?

I'm sure once the deal is signed and sealed (if in fact it is), they will be happy to let their fans know.

That is true. However, we can't really call any move official until it comes from them. I hope it's true, but earlier reports said that he was coming out for a trial - and that goes against this news report that he has already signed. So who knows?

My reading is that the Portuguese site says signed contract, while the Italian site says trial. Which is it?

I received this article this morning: TRIAL, TRIAL, TRIAL!

Toronto FC trials for ex-Juventus defender Andrade

Toronto FC trials for ex-Juventus defender Andrade
28.01.10 | tribalfootball.com

Toronto FC (http://www.tribalfootball.com/category/clubs/toronto-fc) are handing trials to Portugal international defender Jorge Andrade.
Andrade has been without a club since receiving a pay-out from Juventus (http://www.tribalfootball.com/category/clubs/juventus) after failing to recover from a serious knee injury.
The former Porto stopper spent time in preseason with Sevilla and also Notts County in England.
Italian sources say Toronto football chief Mo Johnston has offered Andrade the chance to win an MLS (http://www.tribalfootball.com/category/leagues/mls) playing deal with preseason trials.

they probably don't admit they are trialing back home.. too embarrassing. they want to look good for the local media ;)

The trial sounds more realistic, given the nature of his injuries. 10 days to see how his body is doing should be a good trial. He would certainly be a huge addition to our defence if his recovery is complete.

if Andrade comes in, does that mean we can cut Garcia?????

If Andrade could regain a semblence of his previous form he would still bolster the backline substantially...

If he's recovered from his injury, or can fully before the start of the season, he'd be a great signing.

It's a no LOSE situation, if he's quite healthy and receives a pay for play contract then how can we lose? If he breaks down then we cut him...

I've seen in some European publications that so-and-so player was "signed to a trial". It's not super common but I've seen it before; perhaps the confusion stems from this?

^^ Except if he breaks down after the mid-point of the season. Then we are on the hook for his salary...
