One of my favourite sports bulletin boards is the RealGM Raptors site. Great discussion, and they are very clever with nicknames, intentional mocking misspellings of players names, and the like (Turkoglu recently got named the 'Turkish Delete' after a nightclub altercation with a fan's camera). It's mostly cheap humour, but it always gets me giggling. During the silly season here, I think it's a worthwhile project. I'll get it started, but I'm sure you can do better:

Chad Barrett - Bad Carrot (just seems to fit)
Adrian 'why so' Serioux.
Jam Brennan
Ali Gerbil (terrible, I know)

I thought of some better ones for Ali in the shower:

Ali 'Hot Plate' Gerba
Ali 'Baconator' Gerba (my fav) - alternatively, Ali 'Spicy Baconator' Gerba
Ali 'Valu Menu' Gerba

I think 'Bim Jrennan' goes better too.

I always considered Ali G a good nickname for Gerba.

Bad Charrett is what I like to call him. Carrot sounds a little dorky, but so does mine. Meh.

Jimmy B is Jim Brennan.

Ali G has been the most common, I've also been using Prince Ali (Aladdin reference for those out there who are unaware, and heck, we're in a Disney tourney this year!) :P

De Ro is granted. JDG is the same. Nana...good enough name.

OB White suffices, or simply OB. Although I have thought of OB Wan...but he'll have to earn that one with some 'masterful' goals.

You were thinking of Ali Gerba while in the shower?? That is just weird.....

Bad Charrett ? just a spoonerism ? That's all we can do ?

How about Mickey - as in Rooney - because he looks like Wayne, but finishes like Mickey.

Nana 'Hey Hey' Attakora

Stefan 'Set Me' Frei

My all time favorites in any sport:
Brian 'Totally' Skrudland
Bert 'Be Home' Blyleven
"Rigor Artis" Gilmore (NBA center who didn't move well)

I've heard "Chudley" in the 111's quite a bit, always makes me smile.

Barndoor Barrett is another common one. (As in, couldn't hit one.)

Interesting thread. Although thinking about it, in football most nicknames are derogatory, no? usually for players you don't like on opposing teams. Like Landycakes and Cunt Face (<--- I admit that one can be just about anyone, but therein lies its brilliance).

Apart from golden balls (which I think started out as a pick up on some comment his nasty plastic wife made and wasn't originally intended to be a compliment as such) i can't really think of any world famous footballers that have (nice) nicknames.

How about King Eric... that's a good nickname for Cantona?

eMANnuel GOmez - MANGO! I called him that the entire year....

Sam Cronin - Andy Bernard (The Office) i think he looks like him

Every time Barrett had the ball I screamed "AWW FU*#" - does that count as a nickname?

Hitcho

Stiggy - that's a good example, but it's only a name that man utd fans use, same as King Kenny for Liverpool fans.

twismca - mango's not bad, but can't see it catching on, he'll likely just stay as gomex to most people.
