Just as important as who is coming in is who will be leaving. Rumours circulated last week that goalkeeper Stefan Frei was made available for trade. Frei's play last season showed he can be a starting goalkeeper in MLS for years to come. And his Generation Adidas status makes him an even more attractive asset. With a capable Brian Edwards also under contract, a Frei departure may be a case of having to give up something to get something of greater importance in return.

Interesting. if Frei is available, I wonder who were after? Frei was a big piece to the "success" we had last year.

Losing Frei seems like a big gamble ( even though Edwards was great when called upon ) but I would hope that we would only lose someone like Frei for someone who could really make a difference in this team.

Not that big of a loss IMO, depending of course on what we get back.

His command of the box did not improve as the season went on. Whether that was the fault of the coaches or a lack of confidence is debateable.

The US is a gk producing machine so there will always be decent keepers available, and Edwards seems pretty decent from what we have seen.

The only loss as far as I am concerned would be the GA contract and the impact that could have on the cap and roster.

If Frei was traded for an above average MLS CB I think most people could acccept that.

I'm not sold on Edwards. I can't get over his positioning on NY's first goal in the disaster at the Meadowlands. My 6 year old does better. Kandji was at a sharp angle and hits the back netting

(sorry for posting this ugly memory but it's relevant to the GK discussion)

Great article by gareth... WE lose Frei... and in my eyes ( unless you already got an other good golie lined up) the season is over before you started it. You guys quickly forget the countless game he saved our ass... in my eyes we wouldn;t be as close to the play offs had it not been for him... I think he made the most impact and was the most consistant BY FAR.
Edwards has 2 left feet and 2 left hands... in all categories he is far worse than Frei ( remember sanjose at the end of the season)

I am calling it... if they are trading frei to have edwards on net... We are doomed. ( mark this down)

I would tend to agree about the draft, exept that in TFC case it does not apply, we have drafted some of our most influential players. Frei, Cronin and Edu came from the draft. So draft shmaft does not realy apply to TFC.

I think the draft is of great importance & makes an immediate impact to expansion teams and young clubs in their first 1-2-3 years of competition - but after your teams core group is built the draft doesn't have as much of an immediate impact on your team...

Like you mention, we drafted Frei, Cronin, Edu & others that are regulars. But now that they're established, drafted players don't make an immediate impact... For example, I doubt a drafted keeper - even highly rated would be able to knock Frei or Edwards off the line...

I agree "draft shmaft" is wrong - I think the point should be that the draft is a building block for the future, not an immediate fix to problems or holes in the lineup...

Carts...

Well, we are going to have to make sacrifices to improve the team. And while losing Frei could be blow, he is one player, and losing him could end up improving the team.

-If the trade involves bringing in a solid MLS center back and puts Edwards in goal, I think that we would be a better team and ship less goals.
-If the trade brings in a proven MLS goal scorer, we would probably ship more goals, but may actually win more games.

HEY I am left handed and left footed and your insulting me :D.....
I would rather just say that Edwards is a turd on the field.. He has never impressed me except for that 2nd last game last season. Then goes out on the last game of the season and looks like he's still playing house league soccer.. Another note about Edwards is he's always punting the ball downfield instead of giving it to a defencemen to work up field. In other words were in trouble if he's our starter GK.....

Not to be a jerk, but I thought one of Edwards best qualities was his distribution from dead balls and live ball situations. Much more accurate in both his throws and kicks than Frei.

Seriouxly though, I found we actually played some of our best possesion games when Edwards in net. My opinion obviously.

Is there any chance Greg Sutton would be available again?

Roogsy
01-18-2010, 01:29 PM
J-Mol tweeted the other day that Greg is working out and has interest from some teams. It did not say which teams. I would assume if Frei is being shopped around, Toronto would consider bringing him back in but I don't know if they are one of the teams in question right now.

I remember seeing an interview with Greg just before Christmas I think??? He said that he wasn't giving up on playing and was looking to get himself into the best shape he could while looking for work. He didn't mention anything in particular but from what I remember he didn't rule out an MLS return if the offer was tabled.

I wouldn't rule out TFC getting Sutts back, but I'm sure he'd demand a guaranteed contract this time around.

No way Sutton would be signed as a back up keeper. Sutton was on $150k+.

Edwards quality + his salary > Sutton + his salary

Who's to say we would hire him back at the same salary? There's no rule saying we couldn't offer him $75k to be a backup...

Or offer him a back up GK + assistant GK coach or something.

No way sutton will be getting $150K from anyone in North America.

Like many of the other season 1 players, he was able to hold TFC for ransom when he came due to the roster restrictions at that time. That era is over.

The only circumstance in which Frei should be moved is if Mo gets a bonafide striker or winger in return...

Professional
On April 2, 2005 Reynolds signed with the Portland Timbers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Timbers_(USL)) of the USL First Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USL_First_Division), but saw no regular season game time.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-1) In April 2006 Reynolds signed with Major League Soccer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer) as a “pool” goalkeeper for the 2006 season. He spent most of the season as a reserve keeper with Chivas USA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chivas_USA), under head coach Bob Bradley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Bradley) and goalkeeper coach Zak Abdel, and played in MLS reserve matches, but never made a first team start.
He re-signed as a pool goalkeeper with MLS in 2007, training with Chivas USA, and gained his MLS debut with Toronto FC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_FC) on July 1, 2007 in a 1-1 draw with the Kansas City Wizards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Wizards).[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-2) Three days later he started for Toronto again and earned a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Salt_Lake), but was injured in the 85th minute.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-3) In April 2008, Reynolds signed a contract to be represented by FIFA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA) licensed agent Carlos De Sousa [5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-4) and was subsequently signed to a contract with Miami FC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_FC) of USL First Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USL_First_Division).[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-5) He made three starting appearances in 2008, earning a 1-1 draw on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-6) and two shutout victories against the Rochester Rhinos[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-7) and Atlanta Silverbacks[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-8) to close out the Miami season with a .33 goals against average.
He joined Austin Aztex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Aztex) for the 2009 season, but was released at the end of the year.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Reynolds#cite_note-9).

If Sutton still lives in T.O. I assume he'd play for a bit less here than if he had to live elsewhere to play. I'm not sure whether he'd be the number one keeper over Edwards, but however it shakes out, it might end up to be a reasonable gig for him in the twilight of his playing career.

And at least in TO he has a song... I'm willing to bet that no other team can claim that!!!

+1.

As much as Frei's value is high and they are talking about cashing in, I'd much prefer that we don't screw with what's working. I don't have the confidence that management can shuffle the deck without screwing things up, even if Edwards isn't the guy they are going to have replace Frei.
