"Sources have also told SBI that MLS is in talks with U.S. Under-17 defender Zachary Herold. The young fullback is believed to have received an offer from a German club before being approached by MLS."

Already committed to play at the University of South Florida, Herold decided shortly after the World Cup he instead wanted to play professionally right away. He attended a tryout in Germany and drew an offer from FC Colon, but declined in order to stay stateside.

Hah!

for all those who didnt watch the U17's in November....

Herold played RB in all 4 games. Very athletic, gets into the attack, and quite the potential.

HOWEVER, by the 3rd game his fitness was showing. He made fewer and fewer runs. By the 4th game he was making poor tackles and on numerous occassions he gave the opposing side free kicks just outside the box.

Sounds like a younger version of someone we already have

great just in time for mo's five year plan. I must admit my enthusiasm for the 2010 season is waaay down. This is the make or break year for me.

Meh. IMO, if there's not much available in the 24th slot you may as well make a pick for the future.

I just read from Mo that he said Herold is a "six year Generation Adidas player".

That's a lot of years under contract.

And a lot of years to not take a hit for him on the cap.

Toronto FC (F)
A year ago, Mo Johnston held three first-round picks and wound up keeping them all after holding court with the rest of the league. This year, it appears the league returned the favor as TFC proved unable to pull off any of its trademark wheeling and dealing. The result was Toronto drafting a project in U.S. U-17 defender Zachary Herold and defender/midfielder Nane Joseph. Herold is at least two years from helping, and Joseph looked awful as a midfielder and barely passable as a defender at the combine.

Didn't look at the 3rd and 4th round....did Julian Edwards get picked? If not, I am hoping TFC invites him to training camp.

Then Mo can get him for free. Good strategy.

yeah well you would hope the kid would graduate before 6 years are up, otherwise he's a bust at age 23. hehehe.

but it seem that he's stuck to MLS for 6 years even if he graduates from the program. So if he turns out to be good, and a starter when he's 20 (like Nana), then we still got him for 3 more seasons. That's great.

Toronto FC – C+

TFC couldn't have done much more than it did with this draft. The Reds don't have the roster space to carry an additional American player, so picking up Zac Herold in the second round made perfect sense. The Generation adidas fullback will take some time to develop, but that development won't hinder TFC's playoff push because he won't count against the roster. Should have taken a Canadian with the fourth-round pick, however.

Does anyone else know something about TFC's roster situation than I do? While we are full up on American spots, we still have open International spots that we could use for Americans. And since when do GAs not count towards roster limits?
